more like a helicopter than a plane/rocket

Man, that's awesome! Must have been incredible to see IRL.

Very MythBusters-esque. Good stuff 👍

Hahaha. That was great.

it's too bad only 1 rocket went on the first one, though. The 2nd one was just brilliant.

mythbusters rule! they tried to do a pole vault with a plymouth or something by making the car radio control and having a button that makes the drive shaft fall off to pole vault the car.!

Did you see the second car?

Oh yeah. Any idea what kind of rockets those were?

Well I guess that answers the question whether or not a Mini Cooper can fly.

Judging by the exhaust appearing to be mostly water vapour, and since they were built be relative amateurs, I'm assuming they were hydrogen/LOX rockets.

danoff would be the one to ask.

Those were some big freakin rockets!!! To launch a car like that??!!! The second one looked like a missile.

Yea I don't know what they were using, but LOX seems a little more complex than necessary. I'd have thought they'd be solids so that there was a specific length that they'd burn and that'd be it. It seems safer too since the hydrogen/LOX you could end up with a big explosion if it hit the ground before it ran out of fuel.

Sweet sweet stuff though regardless. Those were WAY bigger than what you can typically get with an amateur rocket license. They had somebody there who was seriously licensed (probably professionally) to sign off on that stuff.

LOX, I remember a bond movie where they found a list that they thought was just kitchen supplies. It had locks on it. They figured out it meant lox liquid oxigen.

Kinda random, just the first thing that came to mind.

Do a google image search for LOX. I got this:

 You think he was on one of the teams?

What? He promised never to post those on the internet! Liar!!!

:D

Classy tightie-whitties.

too bad the 2nd one actually worked.
I would have liked to see it smash into the ground at 100 miles per hour.

That's pretty much what it did! Didn't you see it come down? The burn had ended milliseconds before impact.

[edit] danoff, you're right. I hadn't noticed the black smoke at ignition...

That must have been sweet to be in the 2nd car when it flew.....I probably wouldn't have looked forward to the landing though.

Do you think there was anyone inside?

Might be stupid to ask but look at the second one and you can see a parachute deploy before it hits the ground but too late to do anything.

there were actually three in it. it was the texans' entry for the x-prize.

Keram and VipFreak. Please be joking, please!!

@vladimir :lol:👍

oh... ha ha... jokes on me... I took the bate hook line and sinker... :grumpy:

I was serious :(. They show a shot where the parachute or something is highlighted with a circle.

Meh I'm stupid for thinking there are people that stupid out there.

I Dont think they would be laughing and yelling hooray if the car would have crashed that badly in to the ground with someone in it....But why didithey use minis? there are a lot Ricers out there that spoilers and body kits would have flown the complete car all the way to here finland...but on the down side the body kits wiegh alot...

VIPFREAK
Seriously... ? Why arn't they up for the Darwin awards too??

Don't you have to actually die to qualify?

Funny as hell 👍 2nd one was ingenious. Reminds me of the pulse jets they use on junkyard wars/scrapheap challenge.

The car was supposed to go straight up and "into space" or something.

Afterwards, the parachute was supposed to deploy so that car could float back down. That's my take on it.

If they are well clear of the area, what in god's name would make you think they had a living being in there? Maybe a crash dummy or something, but it'd be inhumane to put something alive in there.
