When you have the title to a car, can you register it in another state? My title for my car is from South Carolina, but I'm in Virginia. My dad doesn't want to go get the car insured if we can't get it registered, so if anyone can help out, please do. I'm pretty sure you can, but I want to be sure.

Sure you can. Take your title to a Virginia DMV office. They will take your South Carolina title and issue you a new Virginia title. There is usually a charge for this. You will also probably need some form of address verification and your driver's license. Check with your state's DMV website before you go down there so you know what they'll require.

Thanks, although do you know how much this charge is? We already have a buttload to pay since I just got my lisence and a new car. Insurance isn't cheap.

No idea. You should check with them before you wait in line only to be told you're missing something.

When I had the titles to my cars switched to from Florida to New Jersey, it was a real frickin process. Cost was $38 per car (by memory). But that's Jersey. Dunno about Virginia.

It will vary by state - look it up on Virginia's DMV website. In fact, you'll probably have to pay a transfer tax based on the blue book value of the car, particularly in Virginia.

Ok then, thanks for all the help. I'll leave the thread open for now (if you mods don't mind) just in case anyone wants to add something I should know, and close it later today or tomorrow.

EDIT: Like dukes post, for example. Thanks 👍

i don't think they added any charge for my title in Michigan when i transfered a ohio title, and i've done it twice and can't really think of any hiccups. just like titling a normal car.
