The bank of course.
It is old news though (happened on Wednesday, August 30th this year) but hadn't posted it here before.
He (Paul, my 21 year old brother) now has a new Skyline, another auto GTS-25 sedan (one year newer, 1992 model) which needed a little bit of work (has cut springs, too loud exhaust and heaps of other stuff) - as i type my brother and our mechanic mate from the Skyline club are outside swapping the suspension over from the old car to the new one. Pics coming of the new one when it is road legal so we can take it somewhere to get piccys of it.
Anywho, old car before:
That is part of Dunedin in the background, pic taken on the Otago Peninsula
Old car after (is worse than it looks, chassis looks quite bent, the fan left HUGE intentations in the radiator and more - will try get updated pics soon);
On the Wednesday my brother was taking a cruise around the Dunedin area by himself (probably the first time he'd ever driven the car just by himself) and at about 6pm or thereabouts (was getting dark) i got the phone call i'll probably always remember. Basically went along the lines of "I crashed the car", "major damage and the right back tyre is blown". Luckily Mum came home just as i was about to jump into my car, as i was really panicing for about 5 mins and probably would have sped there.
While cruising along the Taieri Mouth-Waihola gravel road he came down a small hill then up again and around the corner where the back started to get out. He used over correction but it may have been too much or too little as the car then pointed/slid right, then sharply turned left, making the car slide sideways into the bank front right corner first and then the back sharply went up the bank, back down again and the car ended up in the middle of the road nearly facing the same way he was headed.
Not sure what happened to cause the crash. Could be a combination of driver, road conditions, speed (although he said he was only going 40 km/h or so and i'm sure i've been around that corner faster before) and definately car (because Skylines suck on gravel).
I did have plans of turning it into a track car/race car but the damage would have cost too much to fix, plus the back of the car already had been smashed in (and 'repaired' - looks like a backyard job repair a bit) so would have had to fix that properly too i suspect.
So now he's been swapping all needed/better parts from the crashed one to the new one and once there's nothing else to take the car will be put on NZ auction website TradeMe(.co.nz) for parts (may not be much left though) and/or then just call the wreckers to come pick it up.
But anyway, here's some pics of the crash scene the next morning;
Came from around that corner and hit the bank you can see on the right.
Another view, can see the marks. I'm standing about where the back of the car ended up.
And again. Can also see the impact points on the bank.
The dotted line indicates roughly the path of the car, you can see the short right turn before the big slide.
First white is where the first impact happened. Second white is where the back of the car went up the bank, the red circle is the rock which he hit, smashing up the back of the car (and the rock
).
Our mechanic mate went out of his way to drive to the crash scene, bring along a new tyre/wheel, a flashlight (something we didn't have - by the time we got to the scene it was pitch black) and all sorts of other things. He helped check out the car, disconnect the radiator fan thing (because it has left a HUGE imprint in the radiator) so the car could be driven and other things to help driving. He then drove the car back in the middle of a convoy. Mum, Paul and my sister in front, Simon in the middle (car had no working lights so needed a car to lead) and me at the back driving his R32 GTS (i definately need a manual Skyline now!). We all had hazard lights on and cruised back along SH1 at about 60 km/h.
If it wasn't for him i would have stayed with the car at the scene all night until daylight!
Obviously by the fact that he drove it back it means that the car is still driveable, it seems to be working perfectly just the way it did before the crash! A few weeks later i drove it around town to a couple of places and it still goes alright.
The engine is being given to our mate because of all the help he's given us and as payment for some of that work too. The driveshaft could be put onto the new car too.
So yeah. It still really tears me up inside as i love Skylines so bloody much its crazy.
