I just got myself photoshop, and I was trying to do those carbon fiber hoods. I was using the Photoshop Junkie.com tutorial to do it, but I don't understand a step. Here is the link. My problem starts about half-way down the page where it says:

"Now this is where it gets tricky.
Create a new layer (this should be your third layer) and go:
"Edit - Fill"
then:
Select "Pattern" from the dropdown menu, and click on your Carbon Fiber pattern you just created..."

How do I make a new layer so it looks like this:

I already have the pattern made, I just need to fill the layer. Thanks.

You create a new layer, then go to fill. A menu comes up. Next to "use", click the arrow and in the list select pattern. Your carbon fiber pattern should appear in the little box next to "custom pattern". Then you use free transform, skew and distort to get the carbon fiber pattern over the hood or whatever you want to make carbon fiber.

I'm really new to this, so you are going to have to walk me through this. When I create a new layer I go: Layer-New-? Now I get stuck, I don't know what to choose.

BTW: I am using Photoshop 7.

I can give you a step by step, imaged tutorial, only if you keep in mind my copy of PS6.0 is in French. I'll try to translate most of the columns so you can understand. :) You've already done most of the work, but for people that don't know how to make it, i'll go step by step.

Lets say we're taking this image:

Now select this tool: (It's called Polygonal Lasso, i think)

And trace around the hood's shape, like this:

Now, copy this layer (CTRL-C)(CTRL-V): Your layer screen should look like this:

B5677282.jpg

Now, if you followed photoshop junkie's tutorial, you already have a carbon fiber pattern. If not, refer to it again to do one.

Now create a second layer, by clicking on this button:

Now go to Edit/Fill, and select your carbon fiber pattern:

If you want to add some effect to the pattern, select the Filter Menu/Deformations/Twirl. Add some twirl either to the left or the right, and click ok. It should look like this.

Now here's the part you weren't able to do. Make sure the 2nd layer has been selected, and go to Edit/Transform/Skew.

Now just take the corners of the layer:

and move them roughly around the edges of the hood, like this:

B5677288.jpg

Now hit the CTRL key, and click on Layer 1, It will highlight the car's hood. Now go to Select/Inverse, and hit Delete. You should be left with the car's hood filled with Carbon fiber, like this:

Now select Layer 1, and go to Image/Adjust/Desaturate, then Lightness/Saturation, to make it darker. Reselect Layer 2, and mess with the Layer's options (you know, Multiply, Lighten, etc) so you get a pattern that looks like it has some reflections.

It should look like this:

Hope that helps! It didn't give a perfect effect with this picture, but it's usually pretty good.

Woah, thanks a lot PR. I can do everything up untill the step where I fill the layer. I hit fill, choose the carbon fiber, and nothing happens. It's annoying the heck out of me.

Here is the problem:

I go to create a new layer and this box pops up:

Select your cf pattern by clicking on it, and click OK. Should work now...

Do you mean the carbon fibre pattern? You don't download it, you make it. Once you have made the pattern, you go to Edit > Define Pattern. It explains how to do it here.

It took me a while to find where to edit the saturation...
(I have elements. Same effect came out...)
