Cars wreck then 1/2 track ahead?

Semi new to online racing and have searched the threads to no avail. Today I was in a race and started with all the other cars. When we got to the first turn most wrecked and I drove past. Next thing I know they disappear and are ahead of me. I even hit one at one point and same thing. Is this common, a hack, a server issue? Thanks and keep the rubber side down.

Thanks. Thought I needed to either trash the prescription meds or save them for a rainy night... :)
