Caterham Cup Race 4
Caterham Seven Fire Blade '02 at Tsukuba Circuit - Wet

[There will, of course, be a nice picture here eventually.]

Race Specifics

  • Arcade Mode Time Trial - hotlap
  • Power: 0% (158 hp)
  • Weight: -10% (332 kg)
  • Tire Type: N3
  • Driving aids and transmission mode are open.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times; rumble strips are part of the track; no contact with walls allowed at any time.
  • Please PM me your final time by Tuesday May 19 by 11:59 pm GMT (world clock).

Series General Rules
  • Discussion of times in the race thread during the week are limited to split times (T1, T2). Final times are not to be discussed and must be submitted to me by PM before the week's deadline.
  • Please save your best lap replay in case I request proof. Some form of proof, a photo at minimum, will be required of the winner. I may request proof of any suspicious times, which may include requiring a video or .max file. Posting video or .max replays is encouraged of all participants should they wish to do so.
  • Each race will award points towards the overall championship standings to all who submit a clean lap/race time, with the winner receiving 15 points, second place 12, third place 10, and fourth on down each separated by 1 point (9, 8, 7, etc.). No points will be awarded to a non-submitting driver. You do not have to announce your participation in the championship beforehand: anyone may participate in a race and be counted into the championship points, even if you do not plan on running all the races; similarly, there is no obligation to participate in every race. The driver with the most points at the end of the six races will win the championship.
When you get out on the track, at first, it will probably feel like you're driving on ice. But with a few more laps, you'll adjust to the early braking points and the partial throttle inputs and will hopefully home to like it. I certainly find this a good combo, because it's easy to set what you think is a very good lap early on, and then blow it away later. One of the other nice things about it is that the replay will look extremely realistic because of the real-world lines and braking points you have to follow to set a fast lap. Have fun! :)

Ooh, I am going to love this! :D

Best splits that I noticed: roughly 18.000 and 41.000

The funny thing is, that it started raining around the time I read this event, and it stopped just before I started playing... :odd:

Sorry gents, I'll have no time for this combo :(
Stuck in San Diego with a machine that will not achieve ultimate vacuum and is hence giving other issues.
(For ideas on how boring watching a vacuum gauge slowly creep down is, reference: watching paint dry and watching grass grow!

Looks like I'll be flying home late Friday evening and we're leaving for a mini-vacation for our anniversary on Saturday morning until Wednesday night.

Someone else will have to deal with the photo too, the picture-fairy has just called me to say she's got Swine Flu and will be out for a while!

That's fine, Smallhorses. Real life is always what matters 👍, even when it's no fun 👎. at the swine flu joke, too. What a ridiculous, overhyped story that is, although it seems like the media are the only ones who actually act frightened by it.

I'm not going to have much chance, either, to do anything beyond what I have on the board already. That was a good lap for me, but it still had a subpar seconds hairpin and last sector. It seems like there's always more time to get here, and it's sort of fun, if sometimes bewildering, when you find it.

I gave this a quick shot just now... this car is proving difficult to get used to!

17.176 (seen 16.85)
38.715 (seen .630)

The last section can make or break your time... I know there's at least 1/2 second's improvement there. The problem is the wheelspin out of corners, that's where i'm losing heaps of time I think.

Best splits from me so far: 17.535 and 40.366

Stupid gearing for a wet track - makes it very difficult to be consistently fast

Well, I had a breakthrough... there's a technique i'm using to help my time.

16.746 (no, not a typo)
38.220

I'm losing a little time in sector 2, but the last corners are pretty good. I'd be losing sleep trying to improve that. Submitting the time now, as i'm going on a school camp tomorrow which lasts nine days... :(

Finally got time. Expect some splits tonight :D

Hey, pretty cool! I will see if I can get a time for this thing. Perhaps a good shot to compare myself against other drivers, though I'm not Ayrton Senna in the wet

Sorry for being so slow with the leaderboard, but it's updated now. 👍 I'm glad to see quite a bit of interest in this one, and from people that didn't necessarily express interest at the beginning of the series - it lets me know that this combo is at least mildly interesting.

Edit: I have new splits now.

T1: 16.596
T2: 38.110 :banghead:

As you can see, I gained a ton of time with my fastest T1 ever by a margin, but slowly lost almost all of it by T2. Then I gained a lot of it back in the hairpin, and then threw most of it away in the last corner. In the end, I gained a meager .074 seconds over my previous best, which I'm guessing is still slower than mcsqueegy's. Those are very fast splits 👍, and I wonder what the "technique" you mention is. All I can think of is partial braking and deliberate wheelspin, but maybe there's something I hadn't thought of, like using the grass for improved traction. I really don't know. :boggled:

Me too! I'm hoping it's some kind of... driiiiiiiiiiift! :p video would be interesting to see, too :) (you've got me curious lol)

I'm between 16.800-16.900 at the first sector, but the second one is a pain in my buttocks, somewhere between 38.700-38.900 👎

Maybe using wheelspin to point the car faster, instead on relying only in steering. It's something needed when trying to drive muscle cars in GT4.

Using the grass for improved traction? "Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times". And I doubt it will be of any use using only one real tire for traction in the grass. Rumble strips, however, sounds like a plausible idea. All I can think of is using 2nd gear while in the corners to avoid wheelspin and then downshift to 1st as you come out of the corners, with good throttle control.

Those are both good ideas, Lucas, and both could definitely be effective, although I've personally found that any advantage of using wheelspin to point the car is negated by the obviously reduced traction, since the wheelspin takes so long to stop. But one of the biggest problems at the wet track is that the grass has more grip than the track surface, and putting two wheels on it can actually let you go faster in many cars. I'm not sure whether it works in the Caterham, but I have taken a couple cars to this track only to find that the fastest way around some hairpins is to brake extremely late, slide the car sideways or backwards, point it towards the exit of the turn, and launch off the dirt outside the turn with both drive wheels. PD did a pretty terrible job with the physics of the wet track, as you can see. :yuck: But I think this combo is fun in spite of, or even because of, that.

No 🤬 PD did a bad job with the physics  One would expect to have a hard time coming out of the grass, asuming it should be filled with mud or the like. It's easier to drive in it than in the tarmac  Anyways, will try again later today. This kind of race gives you a deeper thought about how goooood would be for GT5 to have weather changes :)

could not provide anything on this track! :indiff:

:odd:Well, in my opinion, the track is much easier to drive on (than the grass), being much smoother and I seem to start to slide around much more in the grass... Ripple strips helped, though :p

ps weather changes and night features confirmed for GT5 :D:D:D:D

Congratulations on all the great laps, guys, and in particular to mcsqueegy, who, as he said in his PM, used the handbrake to good effect in the first hairpin. 👍 Thankfully for me, his last sector was even worse than mine :p and I just managed to hold him off in the end.

:odd: I remember getting a lap of 1'12.180 or so, but between 1'12.100 and 1'12.180. How come I was 0.700 slower than you, Austin, when your first two sectors combined were (at least) 0.900 faster than mine combined? I would have expected you to extend the lead even more.

Forget it, just nonsense babbling from a loser
Congratulations, guys! 👍
