nothing, its just a cheeper pentium 4, i have a celeron 2.ghz and its just as fast as my 2.0ghz pentium 4.

Wrong.

Celerons are "crippled" Pentium 4 processors. They usually have less cache, run at a slower FSB, and have Hyper Threading disabled.

Celeron's were designed for mostly laptop (or other low power components). They have less in the L2 and L1 cache, as well as many other disabilities when compared to your typical Northwood or Prescott P4. They're not bad for what they are used for, but outside of that, they aren't much use.

My laptop is celeron based and believe me, the piece of crap sucks more juice than a hooker on a busy night. My average battery life for word processing apps is usually around 1.5 to 2 hours...and that's on powersave mode .
Damn I hate IBM's R-series laptops

I get about that same batt life... I suppose if I lower the brightness on the screen I'll get a little more life. :dopey:

Dude, don't talk. I have a P4 3.06 Northwood in my laptop. I get 45 mins on a good day. So yeah, Celeron's last longer.

 yeah that's funny because there's a group of guys in my major and they are always complaining of overheating, no batt life and restarts.

stfu, you're on a Desktop Replacement laptop that's actually got DDR ram AND a high quality video card. I'm using a 2 ghz celeron, 256 megs of SDRAM, and a 16 meg radeon mobility. To top that, a really crappy 12 inch LCD which, on it's dimmest settings is still too bright in most cases

:grumpy: I hate my laptop

on a side note, the hard drive crashed a few days back. Now the pricks at tech support in my school are gonna charge me for replacing it... To think, they replace the hard drive when IT dies but they won't replace a defective motherboard or even RMA it for me :irked:.

Dude, no need to be supa-pissed. Just remember, techies at schools suck. As for your battery life, you might want to consider a replacement, if available. The numbers you're pulling don't sound logical. A buddy of mine has a similar setup, only with a 15" monitor instead. He gets a good 4 hours on a charge.

heh, sorry 'bout that, i guess it came out ruder than I intended.
Actually, the IBM R series all have fairly poor battery life and are probably the worst laptops available on the market. To make matters worse, my particular laptop had been plagued with defective parts and non-functional components since I first took it out of the box. In just one year, it's been to the school's help desk (the folks are IBM certified technicians for these laptops) about 25 times, re-imaged roughly 15 times, and has been to IBM tech desks twice and STILL, the laptop doesn't work right. Worse still, once I get it back from my school on monday or wednesday, I'm going to have to send it back to IBM to have it's motherboard replaced for a 2nd time. After that, my warranty will expire and my school will more than likely charge me for fixing the defects on this god damned laptop when the lease period is over.

Ugh, out of 1500 laptops, WHY did I have to get THIS pos :irked:

Also, average battery life with power consumption settings at a minimal on the r40's is 2.5 hours (based on the laptops my friends have). Advertised battery life is just over 3 hours I think. I'd consider a new battery for mine but this laptop has cost me enough as it is, I can't afford $150 on a new one.

errr...slight edit

Whats wrong with intel celeron? It has just as many ghz as as pentium or amd but its so much cheaper. why?
They suck.

..

Oh, sorry. I was just trying to sum everything up. Right, about that long technical answer...

How about not today. Basically, they took a P4 and cut most of the cache out, then they disabled HT and ran it at a lower FSB. I believe someone else in this thread said that, but now two people did. 👍

The best part is...The older processor, with less cache even, the Duron 1.6GHz out performs the 2.6Ghz Celeron....In everything but one test.
