My question simply is this> When you select your car and deselect the parts you don't want coloured differently, do you,
A) Cut the car out, paste it as a new layer
B) Copy it, paste new body as a new layer
C) Somehow colour it without cutting/copying
D) Other.

And yes, I know I didn't make this a poll, reason being, I would like to also know WHY

I tend to cut it out, paste as a new layer so I can use gradients and such.

I'm a cocky Canadian that will properly show you how to change color!

First like you said, you make a copy of the body.(Only the metallic part)

Secondly, desaturate the body layer, so it can be easy to fit other part on the body.(desaturate the part you want to add so the lightning can be adjusted)

In Third,For lightning adjustement use (image->level). It is very useful to use that so can make the exact color you want.(You can do white & black with that.)

Fourth, This is when you put the color. Make sure you take note about the stuff above(that almost no one here in the site use in the site, I don't know why...). Go in Image->Saturation. Check the part where it is written "COLORIZATION". By playing with the arrow, you can make color.

Duplicate the body layer. On the duplication, select the part with the polygon lasso you want to colorize & do select inverse. After in the option (Select->feather) choose the level of gradiant you want & do edit=>cut. Though, you won't see any color change by now. Finally colorize each body with the color you want & it will make a nicely 2 color gradiant...

 I forgot that part!

EDITED***

  • Select the Polygon Lasso tool and make sure it is Antialiased.
  • Use the Polygon Lasso tool to select the car.
  • With your car still selected, make a new blank layer.
  • Get out the Gradient tool and make sure it is Antialiased.
  • On the new, blank layer, fill the selection with a gradient of your choice
  • Set the Blend mode of the layer to Hard Light, Overlay, etc.

I never used that method... Aren't you losing quality with that???

Can you show us a great example of how it will look with that method?

Take a pic & post it, I wonder how your method worth!

Can someone by any chance show me a before and after pic on PSP7 of how they managed to colour change successfully?

Sorry, I use Adobe Photoshop 4.0.

It's maybe much older than PSP7, but it got what it need to photoshop cars! :P

The pic is not off topic, due that the white is not pure. I used the gradian technique so that you won't see a line of color between the base & rest of the body.

It's harder to hide the fake a painted white or black car made with photoshop. So I use the gradian technique so it can be photorealistic!
