Changing Tastes....

12 years ago - Ferrari F40, although it took me a while to think about it. I think it was the first car I ever really liked, and I remember my friend's dad buying me an issue of Road and Track that first featured the F50. I still liked the F40 more...

Now - Performance vs. price, you cannot go wrong. I can't wait to pick one up for 20 grand when I'm old.

(imageshack is being a little bratty I think...)

Don't wait too long to get that Exige! You want to make sure you're still limber enough to get in :)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Ferrari 288 GTO.

Today there are 2: Porsche 914 and Honda S2000

No offense, but if there's one thing I learned from the short time when I was seriously considering a 914, it's that people who buy, fix, or restore them have way too much money to throw away. They would be awesome little cars if they carried the same value as an old Volkswagen from the same era (and by all means they should carry that same value), but instead, they're 5x to 10x more expensive. :indiff:

The S2000 would be twice as fast, ten times as reliable, ten times easier (and cheaper) to fix, and would probably be twice as likely to get thumbs-ups from passersby. Of course, the cheapest S2000's cost twice as much as the most-expensive 914s (I hope), but you get what you pay for.

That's just my suggestion. :)

It's interesting to see what people wanted "back in the day" , and today"

Indeed, especially among the younger members, whose interests were easily swayed to the fastest and most exotic machines....either that, or whatever their favorite car was in the newest Need for Speed game available at the time.

I kinda figured that, I wasnt planning on getting one anytime soon. Though it would be cool.

A Capri 2.8i Special, like my Grandad had. :sly: (Infact I have a sneaky suspiscion this is my grandad's old car. It's even got a small mark on the rear seat leather in the same place as I remember it.)

It's nice to see I'm not the only one who's into relatively pedestrian but fun and nippy cars. I'd thought I'd be awash in a sea of supercars here... :D :D :D

Toyota Starlet KP60/62 ( rwd! )

If you've ever watched one of these on an autocross, with tire profiles that would shame a go-kart, a 4AGE shoehorned under the hood, a full TRD suspension and an exhaust that's so short it ends inside the engine bay and howls like an F1...

you'd realize:

It's the damn best car ever made... period.

glad to see some KP60-62 fans!

10 years ago, being 7 years old i'd probably want the current batmobile.

5 years ago 1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S

today, the car that i love is MY 1982 Toyota Starlet, bone stock, but i'd take in a heart beat over any of the cars i have owned before ('77 porsche 924, 1989 honda civic hatch, 1988 VW golf GTI 16v, and 1989 BMW 325i)

IMG_1095.jpg

plans at the moment are to get some TRD N2 replica fender flares, front spoiler, and rear spoiler. obviously wedge some wider wheels and tires (starlet guys shouldn't go over 13" wheels in my opinion) after the flares. and swap a 4AGE, AE86 rear end and disk brakes, and a decent amount of suspension parts.
the thing i want to do first is get the flares, fix the rust, and prime it.
in the end, i want it to look like this http://www.pbase.com/toycoolparts/kp_parts (all the way on the right)

Rather than flood things with a ridiculous list, it's safe to say that I'm incredible indecisive when it comes to cars, and pretty much every supercar from the 60's on was on my list (way back when). There's also so many other, conventional cars (like a '57 Chevy), and while this list is in the order I first considered them, they're all sort of "still under consideration". So I'll keep it to the top few that were seriously considered:

1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback, green of course; I'm so easily influenced by movies.
19681.jpg

1979 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI, which was only sometimes white; it was this or a Super Beetle; even I could tell there were few good cars back then.
1095.jpg

1983 Audi Quattro Turbo; all-wheel drive was soooo different
1010_L.jpg

1991 BMW M3; I mean, really - who wouldn't?
001__scaled_600.jpg

1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R r34; my "discovery" of Gran Turismo
nissan-skylinegtrr3401.jpg

1991 Honda CRX Si/HF; gotta have a commuter car, and it's gotta be fun; got lots of plans for it, too.

I'm actually getting a CRX in the next month or so (first time owning two cars in ages), but that's another thread altogether.

Sorry for going way OT, but these wheels are cool:

rb-vi.jpg

Saw em' at the shop while I was changing wheels, impressively wide at 13x8. Only problem is a lack of lip definition, but they look very period authentic. And they're ROTAs, so they're pretty cheap.

yeah, paint them gunmetal gray and you have wannabe watanabes! :D and I do know that Starlet is awesome little car, since mowst of powertrain can be swapped from Corolla's GT models.
yeah.. wide arches, small rally spoiler and either watanabes or some tasty looking 5-spoke rims, accompanied by throaty snarl of 4 ITB's.. yes, I take this over M3. under 700kg's and about as much power as E30 M3.. sounds perfect to me :D

Niky! you're in the phillipines!? they have some awsome starlets there! the guy that is makes the fender flare replicas is there <8- )

yeah, i'm probably going to go with some watanabes (fun fact~ met a ex-girlfriend in the back of a police car with the last name watanabe. she was JDM but no fun.) or some replica, whatever is lightest/cheapest. there is a company that sells wide steelies and i think those would look pretty cool on there.

sorry for getting so far off topic. yeah, i'm with you leonidae, the 4AGE at 9,000+ rpms with ITBs is a sound to envy, i can't wait!

5 years ago i also wanted a MKIII supra, but a 89+ so i could swap in a JZ (either would be fine)

about 8 years ago I wanted this, I still do, but its a little unrealistic at the moment.

About 3 years ago I wanted this, I still drool about owning this someday.

Today, I want this. Hopefully I can get one as a first car. Although a non turbo would be what I'd want.
