Changing Tyre TYPE During Pit Stops

So...

I was running the Roadster Endurance race. I figured, for a laugh, I'd start out on Normal/Soft tyres (N3), for the A-Spec points. Took the lead with no problem in my stock 1.8RS after two laps and had built a 20 second lead by Lap 15.

Then, one AI car broke from the pack and started gaining at 1.5s per lap (this still confuses me). So I decided to pit in and change to my Sports/Medium (S2) tyres. Previous tests indicated that Sports/Medium (S2) tyres would gain me 2.5s per lap in this race compared to my N3 times.

So imagine my surprise when, upon leaving the pits, my lap times didn't change in the slightest and the tyres wore in exactly the same pattern in exactly the same time. On the next stop the tyres highlighted on entry (the ones you're currently using) were still S2, but once again no lap time changes were seen on exit.


Has anyone else come across this error/bug/whatever? Are you only able to change tyres within a tyre type (say S1 to S3) but not change between tyre types (N, S and R type)?
 
There are some oddities with changing tire type that I've noticed,

If you start on Road or Sports tires N1-S3 you can change to any other Road or Sports type tire in the pits, but not to Racing tires. If you start on Racing tires you can only change to other Racing tires.

The A-spec points you get offered at the start are what you get awarded at the end, regardless of whether you change tire type during the race.
I've tested this and proved it in the 200pt A-spec thread.

As for the laptimes, that's not something I've noticed. In a bid for maximum A-spec points (particularly enduro races) I have started on N1 tires (worst tires, max points) and changed to S2's at the first stop. My laptimes did increase exactly as I would have expected them to, the tire wear decreased accordingly and at the end of the race I got the points I would have done if I'd done on N1's all the way.
The test I remember was New York Enduro. Stock Honda HSC, start on N1tires = 200pts
start on S2 tires - 169pts, start on N1's and change to S2's = 200pts.

This has proved quite useful for getting high A-spec on the enduros, start on N1's and manage to keep up for the first stint, then change to S2's and the extra grip means you can concentrate a little less for the rest of the hours of racing and still get the points.

Well, I was in a no-race tyre race anyway.

But earlier tests had shown 2.5s quicker lap times with S2s compared to N3s and 3 laps less longevity. Instead I got preceisely the same times and tyre life.

I suspect that although it changed the tyres in name, it didn't go any softer than the lowest N grade - which happened to be the ones already on the car.
 
To the best of my limited knowledge you can not change between the Normal/Sports tyres and the Racing tyres because they use different wheels. This relates to choosing your wheels in GTAuto, where you can choose different wheels for Normal/Sports, Racing, Dirt, and Snow.

Also, changing tyre type sometimes means changing driving style. A softer tyre may need to be driven harder (or softer) to get improved times. While B-Specing the Nurb' 24-hr I was getting better times with a '2' setting than a '3' setting on the softer tyres of my AMG Merc (about 2 secs a lap).
 
Really, 2.5 secs between N3's and S2's? I can't say i've ever noticed a gap that big when i've been tire testing. N3's seem to be very nearly as "grippy" as S tires once they've warmed up and my laptimes are within .5 on most cars with either tire. N2/N1 tires and I would expect that kind of gap.

You could well be right and the game is giving you the option of something that it won't actually do. Maybe try the race again (not all of it! lol) but try a more extreme tire change, i.e. N1's to S3's? it should be pretty obvious then if you aren't on the tires you put on in the pits.
 
I only use super hard tires in front & rear. There is very little grip when new (Blue). When the tire is green they are very good and last the longest. My time when the tire is green is usually averaging 7 sec. faster (any track except New York he sucks) than my B-spec AI. He is not that bad for 7700 point.

This happened when I did this race. ( I cant remember what tires I used). He slowed down again after he pitted for new tires, drove another slow 20 laps and then put the pace on again.
Pity the race is 4 hours long this time.
PD read how easy it was to win this event in GT3 and changed it.
Did you look at what tires 2nd place guy was running?
Has this guy been programmed to run with the pack to conserve his tires and then breaks away?
Maybe the trick is to start with soft sport tires and pit more often.
 
Okay. For an experiment I took some field notes. Results:

1st Race:
N3 tyres: Maximum final corner speed = 71mph
Switch in pits to S2 tyres:
S2 tyres: Maximum final corner speed = 71mph

2nd Race:
S2 tyres: Maximum final corner speed = 74mph (cold tyres), 76mph (green tyres)

Add to that the fact that I've only run 5 laps so far and have obliterated my fastest lap in race 1 after I "changed" tyres leads me to one inescapable conclusion:

Despite written indications to the contrary, one cannot change between Normal and Sports type tyres mid-race (at least in the Roadster Endurance).
