Chapparal 2J and Toyota 7 driving gear

Here are two cars from the exact same year (Toyota 7 and Chapparal 2J), yet the drivers wear different gear. The driver of the Chapparal wears the old style gear, but the driver of the Toyota wears modern race gear. Can someone tell me why this is?
 
the driver wear different gear depending on the year of the car? i never noticed that
 
I don't really care what my driver or the comp is wearing. Now if it added a speed boost...
 
That's a fairly interesting observation.

Perhaps one thing to take into account is the differing in country and then culture, perhaps the Americans hadn't adopted the modern gear yet and the Japanese already had?
