GTP:

A few users making very large posts have encountered problems where the post is not editable or quotable after it is made. Only a blank screen appears in the edit window or quote box.

This appears to be caused by posts exceeding 22,000 characters in length. It is possible to paste larger posts into the composition window, but doing so leads to the problems described above and is NOT recommended.

When making very large posts, we recommend composing them in MS Word or other word processor that can give you a character count before pasting the text into GTP. If your post length is approaching 22,000 characters, it should be split into multiple posts.

Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. If there are currently any posts of your own that are over 22,000 characters and you cannot retrieve the original text of the post (with vB formatting tags, etc.), send Jordan a private message and he will be able to provide it for you.

Hey Duke. Well, it is nothing about the characters limit but about the link in the announcements.

attachment.php

When I click on the link, I am linked to this thread: Expected Site Downtimes

About the characters limit, well, when someone is posting, it should had something with the limit and how many characters you are using (like 100/22,000), that way we would know how many character we can include in one message. But that will include coding and bla bla bla, but it is just a thought...

Edit: Strange, part of my post was deleted...oh well…must have forgot to paste that part

I don't know if its just me, but i did notice something. When i was posting in some of the threads, the text became smaller than usual (not just me,but everyone else as well) and i don't know if its the character or some sort of bug. Would be great if Jordan could fix this problem....

you probably pressed ctrl at the same time as the scroller on your mouse. That usually makes characters bigger/smaller

The link has been corrected, and the forum will return a proper "your post has more than 22,000 characters" message if you try to submit one that is too large.

Please start a new thread in the Site Feedback forum, I won't be able to handle your issue here. Also, please include a lot more detail when describing the problem (screenshots are always a plus).

Okay, never mind. I think what -Diego- said was true.Didn't know that really. Sorry for the inconvenience :indiff:

Will this character limit be a permanent feature of GTP9?
If so it's a pain for many folks who've meticulously assembled big lists of data, e.g. Rypien's Ring Openday Combined LAN times thread, Angel Creator's Suzuka Laptime Challenge thread or hispeed's Stock Car Race Comparison/challenge thread.

Will it be possible to insert posts into threads for the users that may have to split up long posts into several sections, without having them end up spread out through the thread?

I made an edit to the stock car list last night, including spaces the list is now about 148000 characters long, and would have to be posted over 7 or 8 posts consecutively! That doesn't include the CLUB 200 drivers lists or rules, both of which add to the post size. At the moment the only way to get round this seems to be to create a new thread and reserve several posts at the beginning in order to allow for list expansion. This also means all the hard work and views in the original threads is ignored as the new ones take over.

I want to keep maintaining the stock car list and have hispeed's permission to create new threads & posts to put it in, but I hate to see the effort he made in launching it becoming redundant due to a new feature in this version of GTP9. It's already caused several longtime users here problems, and will surely continue to do so. Isn't there someway of overriding it?

Well, I hope there isn't a way to "override it", as the problem stems from new security software which I have installed on our new server. It's trying to protect the site by preventing unusually large amounts of data from being submitted to and from the server via web forms (this is how increasingly common XSS injection attacks occur). I have not found a way to specifically disable this feature without removing the software altogether, but I will keep looking as I understand it is a problem for us.

Smallhorses and others who have unusually large posts, please try editing them now and see if you continue to experience these issues.

 Jordan!

200 A-spec Sarthe 24hr II (Stock, used Nissan R390 GT1 Race Car '98) *Now with Pics!* >29000 Characters (including spaces, and without vB code in MS Word) now edits OK, and repeatedly! Phew!!! :)

200 A-spec attempt Sarthe 24hr I (Stock, used Toyota GT-One Race Car '99) >56000 Characters  (including spaces and without vB code in MS Word) now edits OK, and repeatedly!

Whatever you just did seems to have fixed the issue!!!
Woohoo! I can e-mail hispeed the next Stock car list update, and it should be able to update just as before! 👍 Nice! :D

-> Hmm I see, but is there anything else that I can do, especially doing my insane wish list?

This thread should actually be deleted, as it isn't an issue any more and the character limit has been removed. :)

OH that's cool, I didn't realise it and I was looking for ways of shortening my posts and leaderboards... thanks.
