So, a couple of my buddies and I have decided to take our PS3s and copies of GT5 into work one Friday afternoon and network ourselves up in one of the Conference rooms. I have agreement, in principle, from my immediate line management, but still need to sell the idea to the building owners.

So, I've opted to go with the Charity line in order to convince those that need convincing :sly:

So what am I after?? Firstly, I need some challenges. Thus far I have considered:

  • Hot laps around the 'Ring (Toyota 86 GT??).
  • Can you beat Clarkson around Laguna Seca in an NSX?? (thanks to CSL, who happened to be driving an NSX at Laguna when I joined his Lounge, earlier)
  • Can you beat the Stig around the TGTT in a McLaren MP4-12C??

I'm open to further suggestions for challenges and cars. I do want to keep the cars at stock weight and power, but drivetrain, suspension and transmission can be fully upgraded. I'm thinking of running on Sport Soft tyres too. It is unlikely that those participating will have played GT5 before, so the cars need to be easy to drive. No aids, other than ABS1, I don't want to entirely neuter the experience. The cars must be able to run online, as I suspect that we will head-to-head a few races too. The cars will have to be Premiums and thus easily available.

For now, if the Good Ideas Brigade can suggest some other challenges that Regular Joe's can relate to, I'd appreciate it most highly. Once there are some solid ideas, I'll open to the floor up to the tuners and ask for cars to be built to the required spec.

Hit me up and let me know what you think...

set the best time on the ring in a nascar / zonda R on comfort softs after 10 Guinness in 10 min :D

no j/k sounds like fun mate , have a good time ...

That sounds like one of my suggestions for the Drunk Olympics. First of which was replacing the water in the swimming pool with vodka. I suspect that had a certain hotel in Las Vegas done just that, then Prince Harry might have beaten Ryan Lochte :sly:

Back on topic now, please, just remember, it's all for charity...

If you have people who aren't even particularly fans of racing games going to participate, I think some driver aids may be useful. Beer and food should be mandatory for your event too.

I did think about using aids, but after having driven a few cars recently with TC and on one awful occasion, SFR, I'm not so sure.

If I can keep the cars reasonably powered and weighted and on grippy S3 tyres, I think aids free (other than ABS) should be ok. However, I am willing to change my stance and remain flexible if it proves too difficult to come up with suitable cars...

I know your not a NASCAR fan but as an idea how about doing a few quick laps in them at Daytona. Easy track to drive but there is a real difference between just getting around the track and setting a blistering time. Would also make for some fun short races.

Along the same lines you might think of running the Ferrarri F1 cars at either Monza or Spa to give them a taste of something they're probably more familiar with.

In both the above cases using some TC might make things easier overall for those who are new to the game or only very casually acquainted with it as with the higher power even running on race soft tires its easy to overwhelm the rear ends. Spinning out due to to much throttle may be fun and funny the first time or two but can quickly become agrevating to a new comer. You want people not only to have a few minutes fun and some laughs but to hopefully enjoy it enough to want to do it again in the future.👍👍

I like the idea of NASCAR, xDee, Daytona would be reasonably easy to navigate for a novice. They're load and brash and I suspect people would enjoy it from the cockpit 👍

I'm not sure I own either of the F1 cars (unless you win them through A Spec events), they might prove a tad hairy, but as you rightly point out, people will be able to identify with them. I'll try a few builds out and see what they're like...

EDIT: Monza would seem a logical place to run F1 cars, fast and not too bumpy...

More grip. People turn video games on and they don't expect to have to brake. We are talking most likely all 100% noobs.

Simple track, simple car, enough grip/aids to make it around easily.
I'd go for something they can drive fairly easily without crashing much, Audi TTS with SRF on SS's at HSR, something like that.

I mean, if we're talking people who haven't played, they're probably not going to want to finish a lap at this "Nurburgring" thing you keep talking about.

Consider 4WD cars to help eliminate oversteer and the subsequent instant frustration for those unfamiliar with the game dealing with the back end coming around to say hello each time they mash the throttle.

I also second the idea of laps at an oval track, such as Dayton or Indy. Racing line ON for all events of course, and automatic transmissions.

Samba Bus mash up at a twisty? Good for some contact and some fun for sure.

Agreed. Although I will endeavor to avoid using SFR (we'll see how that works out :sly:). I know a few of the guys will want to tackle the 'Ring, petrol heads who give me a good kicking around our local kart track.

I'm think perhaps a GT-R for lapping there...

I had considered exclusively using 4WD cars, but I was PM'd another great suggestion yesterday, which I'm just about to test. Similar to the Seasonals we get, I'll take a Merc SLS (stock) and set a hot lap around somewhere like Eiger Norwand and give the 'chasers' a maxed out RM'd Suzuki Capo, on racing slicks. I'll let you know how I get on with the Merc :scared:

Thanks for the suggestions, folks 👍

I second that idea! :D The Top Gear guys are always doing something like this in the cheap car challenges and I think it could be fun.

I too would stick with FF or AWD to keep the frustration down. Maybe see if anyone has a car in the game and let them drive it around somewhere?

I think bone stock is best for simplicity.

And remember that you and I know that S3 tires are grippy, noobs will be sliding off every corner and screaming that the tires have no grip.

And for track, the simpler the better. Nothing more complicated than High Speed Ring. Not too long ago I put my wife in an Evo X at HSR with a DFGT and after many crashes she gave up and said it was too hard. I put her in a Viper ACR at Daytona and she had a blast.

Thank you Sir. My boss drives an Evo X, so I know he'll want a crack in one. He's the exception though. Low PP and grippy, grippy tyres is the order of the day.

Duly noted. Much as I want to inflict the 'Ring on the masses, I think that tracks such as you've suggested, plus maybe Monza and possibly Deep Forest for those that show competence.

Thank you both. Stay tuned for further developments and feel free to make more suggestions. The Merc Vs Capo battle is already off, the Merc is just too quick, even on short, tight tracks. The Capo is a furkin blast, but just not quite fast enough. So I need to find either a slower rabbit, a faster fox or maybe both... :indiff:

I know it will sound odd but try something like the Enzo for your rabbit. The Mercedes, BMWs and Audi's all handle to good in stock form to really give your underpowered race car wannabe a real chance. What you want is something that will be a real handful stock and has issues with tight and/or twisty tracks.

Not sure if this is done yet but how about doing a RM'ed Suzuki hot lap challenge on something like Suzuka East?
