Yes, you'll probably already be screaming "3-colour Sunburst Fender strat!" but that's way too much money.

Instead, I'm looking into cheap guitars with both the capability of some serious solo abilities, and the funk sounds, becuase that's what I mainly play.

I was looking into Squier, are they any good? I don't think the Stratocaster is that much of a pretty guitar, I like the Tele's much better, but I'm unfamiliar with their ability to funk sounds. Actually, Squier here in Norway is so cheap that I'm beginning to wonder about the quality of their guitars... or are they really that good? (Should be decent since it's Fender parts, right?)

My ultimate dream guitar is a 3-colour sunburst Fender Jazzmaster, but oh well, guess that purchase will have to wait a few years :D

Thanks,

Well, Prince's main guitar used to be a Tele. Steve Cropper plays a Tele. These are two of the funkiest guitar players about.

If you want the most versatility, a Strat Style guitar is the way to go.
Frankly, I'd buy the best Squier in the store under $200.
If you go into a store with 50 Squier Strats on the wall play them all, setting aside the ones that sound good "acoustically". Then pick the best one of the bunch.
A rule of thumb for electric guitars, if it sounds good unplugged, it will sound good plugged in.
Then I'd block the trem, as I tend to break strings using the whammy bar, and prefer finger vibrato anyway.
ALso, the simpler the ax is to maintain, the less time you'll need to spend working on it.
I'd then have their tech guy put a set of Seymour Duncan pickups or Fender Lace Sensors, in the Squier Strat. You'll still be in under about $350 for the ax. If you drop another $75 you can get a set of locking tuners. One caveat here is to talk to other players you trust, and ask them who works on their guitars. You may be able to find a good tech at the place you purchase the axe.
You'll likely get two names. The name of the guy that almost everyone trusts to work on their axe, and the name of the dude that no one wants touching their axe.

Another option, is to get a catalog from Carvin www.carvin.com.
They have in the past carried a do it yourself Strat style guitar kit for under $300, and you can order it as a "hardtail" or a "tremolo" model, and you can pick and choose your pickups and tuning machines, etc.
With Carvin you come out with a higher quality guitar. Granted, you have to build it yourself.
But you can paint it any color you want or with any design, or simply finish it with tung oil.
Also, the pickguard comes with all your electronic installed, so all you really have to do is line the routs for the pickups, finish the body, put body and neck together with supplied hardware, and put in and connect the pre-assembled pickguard.
This also gives you a more intimate relationship with the guitar, and how all the stuff works together...

Little update on the guitar purchase:

The Squier is not coming. Instead, I'm getting a Mexican made Fender Stratocaster :). Since my dad bought a new amplifier, I got a small discount on the MIM, and extra strings along with a Fender guitar belt came with it, so I could not say no to the offer. My dad played it and he said it sounded very nice. For the record, he's in Belgium for business as we speak right now, and he comes back Thursday night. It's going to be an exiting weekend :p If you're doubting about my dad's skills, he's got an Ernie Ball Musicman, so nothing against his tastes in guitars right there 👍

Shouldn't I be happy with the guitar, I got the salesman's word of getting my money back as soon as possible, so that's a great plus as well. Here's to the wait 👍

As for the colour, sunburst was out, so I had to go for black :indiff: Oh well, sunburst next time :D

Guitar arrived Thursday, and I love it!

It sounds best when plugged into the amp (duh!), the sound is not as sharp as my previous guitar, and I've got plenty of different mixtures to choose from with the tone knobs.

On that, my dad came home with the real big thing; A Mesa/Boogie amp. It looks amazing, and it weighs like hell. He got it for 1200 euros, with 1800 being the original price. I should be getting a decent amp next as well, a VOX maybe... Anyway, I got my Fender for half the price, yes, HALF. Sealed the deal at 300 euros, while I easily could sell it here for double the price, w00t w00t! :D

👍

Oh, I just figured out why i recognize that guitar.

I have a friend who has a slightly different model the only difference really being the color scheme, his is shiny purple. That's a great choice I think.

I try to lean towards acoustics with a pickup just because if I was at a school thing where I am sometimes asked to whip out my guitar and entertain the kiddies, I could do so.
