The Chevrolet Corvette "L88" was the biggest and baddest Corvette of the 60's. It used the same engine as the Corvette Sunray DX at 1967 12 hours of Sebring. GM quietly offered the L88 engine package to the public so that it would be eligible in SCCA and FIA GT events. It was an option code from 1967 to 1969 and Chevrolet actually discouraged L88 orders from dealerships and the public. The reason for this was because this Corvette had over 500 HP and was capable of 170MPH, developed for the track and never intended for road use. The L88 package was first offered to Sunray DX Motorsports who raced at Sebring and Daytona, and packed with competition hardware the L88 Corvette was a pure race car. Only 20 cars were built in 1967 but nearly 200 were ordered for the C3 platform. At half the price of the L88, Chevrolet offered the Z71 however GM fudged the numbers to keep the L88 off the road. The L88 even came with a warning sticker on the centre console which emphasized that only racing fuel was to be used. GM claimed 435 HP in the L88, when in actual fact production trim L88's produced 570HP. The price of the L88 was double the price of a standard Corvette.
