The first thing that comes to mind is that these artificial land masses won't hold up. It says in that article that they are concreting over the top of the built up sand. Dubai has issues with the islands that they created, not only stagnant water but they also have to keep pumping sand back in to the area to stop the tides washing the sand away. It also says that they are pumping the sand over the top of existing coral reefs, idiots!

More importantly this will only lead to increased tensions. It's like the Berlin wall of the South China Sea.

China is creating new facts "on the ground", building an air and naval base in the middle of a sea disputed by 5 nations. They act and the rest react. Vietnam, Philippines and US are not amused. A perfect example of Chinese power in a Chinese pond. They have claimed it, have now taken the high ground, and nobody else can do a thing about it; once again might makes right.
