In recent years, products made in China have gained more renown for being cheap than for the quality control behind them. Up until now, inexpensive sneakers that fall apart after a few weeks or DVD players that work erratically have been more of an annoyance and an economic threat as opposed to a physical one. Recent headlines would suggest that might be changing, however. The contaminated pet food that killed dozens of cats not long ago and the video of a Chinese car collapsing in on itself during a European crash test bring the issue of potentially hazardous Chinese imports to a whole new level.

Foreign Tire Sales, Inc. of Union, NJ is suing China's Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. over a series of catastrophic failures of tires they manufactured that resulted in a fatal car crash in Pennsylvania. Hangzhou has been manufacturing tires sold by FTS and other distributors that left out an extra layer of rubber between the steel belts, causing them to overheat and have tread separation similar to the Firestone tires that failed on Ford Explorers several years ago. The tires may need to be recalled and FTS doesn't have the financial resources to deal with something like that, so it's suing the Chinese company to cover the expenses since they built the tires in a way that differed from what was specified. The Wall Street Journal's report on the matter contains additional details, and is well worth a read.

Thanks to Mike for the tip.

this is so funny , serioulsy chinese suck at makinng products

The chinese have also been making Goodyear Eagle F1's that have illegally found their way onto the UK market. If you have a eagle f1 that says made in china get in touch with goodyear. So far of all known cases to myself people have gotten their chinese made eagle f1 replaced for a legitimate one.

More specifically...

This applies to Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s, and what you're looking for is an absence of an "E" mark, not a "Made in China" mark.

It's actually not illegal to sell them, buy them or fit them, but it is illegal to sell/fit them for road use.

I've got to get me one of these Chinese cars fitted with Chinese tyres. Who needs the thrill and excitement of supercar ownership when you can 'live on the edge' with a car that's likely to destroy it's tyres and cause you to be crushed to death in the resulting accident at the drop of a hat 👍

Are the Chinese even aware they can't sell their (Automotive) products abroad due to safety concerns?

For that matter, are Chinese Consumers even aware they're driving deathtraps?!

Censorship to the rescue!

I think they just can't afford something else.

If you are familar with driving in China, you'd realize safe, China, and driving do not go in the same word. Pedestrians have no right of way, they don't really have schools, etc, and they don't have the infrastructure for it.

They are what happens if capitalism isn't controlled at all.

China today is a lot like North America/Europe about 150 years ago during the industrial revolution. Unheard of economic growth powered by the millions working jobs that nobody would dream of taking today with little control over what gets produced and how.

Exactly what my boss and I were discussing earlier. Only thing that makes it worse the is the new global economy and the massive amount of trading that puts these items in other markets...

I really support chinese products. After all, they are cheap but don't or should i say never buy anything which is electronics, cars or anything that could kill you.I bought some chinese products (pirated PS2 games, pirated clothings, well anything that is safe and fake) and i don't recommend anyone to buy chinese products (unless your poor like me :( ) and i should say, even Proton sold better cars than Brilliance (or whatever you call it)

LOL! The Hyundai Accent that my aunt is giving me has Hangzhou tires on it. My dad won't even let me put the car in gear with those tires on it.

Well thats not really true, I support chinese products aswell, they know how to make the majority of products to an equal or better quality for half the cost, dont want to have to pay the rip off european prices for lets say a fancy designer cork screw that looks identical to a chinese replica that works just as well!

They have a great way cleverly designing things to appeal to a wide market range, loads of useful and clever gadgets come out of china that would have never been thought of elsewhere.

You also have to remember that nearly all complex products from major manufacturers are now made in china, all the computer stuff, lcd screens, portable electronics etc etc... not to mention nearly all of the worlds clothing, they are mostly of a good quality.

Of course you have to remember that its catching up with the world in terms of economic development and standards and it will take them time to learn, do you think european cars were safe 150 years ago! For now I would not purchase big things like cars (and as mnm_bmx said anything which can kill you) but everything else seems to be ok, I never had any trouble with any chinese products which I have bought, and I have bought tons!

1955...

Doc Emmett Brown: Ha! No wonder it failed! It says "Made in Japan" on it!
Marty McFly: What are you talking about? All the best stuff comes from Japan.

Give the Chinese time.

But don't give them any money for cars or tyres, obviously.
