Ok, I'm booking to go to York on the train from Edinburgh and It will be the first time I've been on a Longer train journey on a bigger train. I have heard that people sometimes take your seat even if it has been reserved? Is this True?

Can anyone give me some advice? thanks.

You won't be getting on the train part way through it's journey (i presume the service begins in Edinburgh?). So if anyone does sit in your seat, they won't have been sat there long, so they'll have no real reason to be funny with you if you politely point out to them that they are sat in your reserved seat. It's a nice trip from York to Edinburgh, you might as well enjoy it.

Some services actually start in Glasgow, and so Edinburgh may not be the first stop. If you have a reservation, you are entitled to ask anyone sitting in your seat to move. However, depending on when you travel, you will probably find that there are plenty of other seats available too i.e. non-reserved seats and reserved seats that are not being used. If the reservation ticket on the seat states that it is reserved from a point before you got on, but the seat is empty, it is safe to assume that the seat is free. But often the ticket will show more than one reservation for a single seat (i.e. Glasgow - York York - London etc.) so you may want to check that too!

Good luck getting the person sitting in your reserved seat to move. Be prepared to sit on the floor between carriages (speaking from experience...)

Don't stand for that, mild verbal abuse is a good starter and if that doesn't work there are many more things you can do to make them feel uncomfortable, sneezing on them is one such example. :sly:

Take a book, or a laptop - there's only so much staring out of the window you can do. Well, I can do. You might not get bored as easily as me.

I always wondered how you don't go mad with boredom on the northern treks. If I'm driving, I have something to do, so it's fine. Sitting with nowt to do gets dull a bit quick.

I've got a helmet you can borrow if you want :)

Thanks, I'm travelling with Cross Country, I've read that they can be a bit more reliable with seats that Nat. Express can be,

Hmmm, If it stopped in Falkirk on it's way I could have jumped on there, Never Mind.

Come on, Everyones got to love the mountains and watching whoever is sat across from you and listening to thier annoying phone conversations. (When I went from Glasgow-Oban that is excactly what I done :) )
