My girlfriend's dad just bought himself a PS2, and wants to get into video games a little bit, mainly war games (which there are a lot of). I was trying to think of something to get him for christmas and my girlfriend suggested a PS2 game. And here is where I turn to you guys for help :sly: and here are some things I was thinking of....

- A game with a nice walk through tutorial at the start would be great I think, something to show you what each button does, you know, hands on learning.

- If its a shooter game, maybe an adustable difficulty level (easy, medium, hard, etc..) or just a plain easy game to start with. He is in his late 40's, and the last time he actually sat down and played a video game might well have been on the original Nintendo.

- A game where time is not an issue, where you can move at your own pace.

I dont think he's really interested in any racing games, he claims to have enough fun in his 540 to and from work each day. I dont know if he would get into any of the GTA games, although I might let him borrow one since I find them to be relatively easy (to a point) and possibly a good game to learn the controller layout, even if you arent trying to achieve game completion. He is currently borrowing Medal of Honor Frontline from me, but I dont think he's tried it yet.

Ok so have at it, lets throw some ideas around, the clock is ticking but thankfully I still have time :)

Well the Medal Of Honour games are quite good. Some very easy settings and there are instructions throughout the first level.

But I know there are better games out here.

What about Killzone? I know that the game is always a topic of much discussion and hype but it really is a good solid shooter. It is even a better deal now that it is a PS2 Greatest Hits and can be purchased for $20 brand new.

The first level of the game is a tutorial where you defend against advancing enemy forces while moving your way through the trenches. The game pauses to show you how to shoot, aim, zoom, change weapons, run, and throw grenades. After playing the first level you have full knowledge of all the gameplay elements.

The game has three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard. You can play the game at your own pace as there are no timers or timed objectives to complete. You can save your game after each level.

Also, there is online and offline multiplayer. If he does not want to go online you can setup an offline deathmatch game and practice against the bots.

Killzone is a good game, not great, but definately a good game. The $20 price tag also makes it a good deal. While the graphics could be better the atmosphere in the game is amazing.

I think he might have a hard time with FPS controls, moving the charachter with one thumbstick and the camera with the other. He might learn quicker with a third person shooter, like Socom.

Medal Of Honor: Frontline is the best FPS for PS2 in my opinion. I know that it lacks in realism, it's old, the graphics aren't as good as in today's games and it's not so long, but as a package it's great. The sounds are excellent, it's quite easy and quite relaxing, no time limits anywhere, just the game I would buy for a beginning gamer. :)

And it's Platinum nowadays. 👍

For a third person first thing that comes to mind is Mercenaries, I tried playing Socom once and maybe it was just because I wasnt used to it but I didnt live very long.

But yeah, he's borrowing Frontline from me now, and I have Killzone if he wants to borrow that later. Ill talk to him this weekend and see how he's doing with that one, if he's even started it. Maybe I can get him one of the newer MOH games, because while the graphics arent the greatest and they arent the most realistic they still are fun. I doubt he's ready for something like Brothers In Arms yet, I cant even play that one well!

If you're getting him a MOH, stay away from the Rising Sun unless he especially wants to shoot Japanese. It is far more irritating with the success requirements than the Frontline or the latest, the European Assault. Frontline would be my bet but the European Assault isn't bad either.

Oh, about the Brothers In Arms... I never finished it, I got frustrated on the Caen level. :grumpy:

lol I got frustrated on the first or second level! Ive seen european assault when my brother rented it, it looked pretty good.

I have rising sun myself and im thouroughly enjoying it, not a whole hearted fps player myself but this is one of a few i enjoy.

Its also led me into buying European assualt and brothers in arms at some point, probably for christmas.

I agree with either of the MOH selection. Rising sun or Frontline. They are both very easy games for beginners and the controls are also very easy. I believe left button is grenade and right button is shoot. Very simple for beginners and both games have an incredible starting level!!!

The downside on the Rising Sun is the requirement to get the three gold stars: you have to have 80% gun accuracy. This takes the fun out of a shooting game as you have to make every shot count, even when you're surrounded by enemies you must be thinking more of the accuracy than survival.

After getting the three golds, however, you can take a different approach and use two clips on every enemy if you like. :) Then it becomes real fun.

I beat rising sun and never had to worry about any accuracy. Not sure what your talking about. :dunce:

The other cool thing about rising sun is the CO-Op play available in story mode. You and your girlfriends dad could play together agains the enemy and play thru the entire game together. :)

The accuracy isn't needed to complete the game but to get the medals for the missions. If you have all medals too then this gets interesting. :)

Its been a couple years since I played it but I dont remember caring at all about the medals. It didnt seem to effect the game in any way that I noticed.

oh yeah I forgot about the co-op because I rarely have someone play with me. right now Im leaning towards Rising sun, I dont think he's had the chance to play Frontline yet but Ill ask him this weekend

My dad plays it. And the most complicated game he ever played was Xevious on NES (what a great game that was). Or he could play Mercenaries, if my 6yo brother can play it, his G/F's dad could play it.

I can send you one of ours for very cheap if you want it. Heck I could probably send you both of ours if you are interrested. My girlfriend and I used to play RIsing Sun online all the time back in its prime. Now we play BF2:MC. PM me if your interrested. They are used but most people dont care.
