Chrysler has decided to move the 2008 Dodge Viper slightly upmarket from its current price point, creating a gap for the Chrysler Firepower, reports the U.K.'s Car Magazine. The publication indicates the Firepower is moving ever closer to approval, echoing media reports from as early as January. At the Detroit auto show, Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda said the Firepower was still "on our agenda." In May, the Canadian Auto Press reported the Firepower Concept was among Chrysler's top considerations.

Okay, so I understand the idea behind all of this, but shouldn't the Firepower be the top-line model? Chrysler is still the top-dog in the US line, thus my reasoning. They (DCX) must be assuming that it won't work because the Firepower uses the 6.1L HEMI for power, not the big-bore V10, but thats only a guess.

...Maybe DCX could go about making a knock-off V8 or V12 from Mercedes to go in the Chrysler and make things the way they should be. The Viper is allready too expensive, and even with extra power on tap, that doesn't mean it will be the top Supercar in the US again...

I'm not sure if this is a good idea. Personally, I think Dodge should just stick with whatever the final Viper is, and sell it at according price. I just don't think they should engineer a car to fit a price bracket.

Move the VIper upmarket?!? Methinks they should focus on turning the Firepower into a GT-cruiser rather than changing up the Viper.

I can't figure how much further upmarket that beast of a car can go. The Viper's calling card has always been its raw, unforgiving nature. To sissify it and push it up would only ruin it....

I agree 100%. It would be a shame to change the Viper's formula.

I think you're looking at a performance hike rather than a full overhaul with the Viper, I doubt you'll see and Viper GT's in the future. More power and better suspension to cope on the other hand.

A flagship car doesn't have to be a grand tourer.

Lets hope the price increase not only comes with a larger glovebox, but with a signifigant update in interior quality as well...

But still, would you want to pay over 100k for a stiff-riding, punishing and demanding car like the Viper... oh, wait... Porsche sells lots of GT3s...

But seriously... the Firepower will possibly be a prettier car, so that should be the one going upmarket.

The 997 GT3 is meant to have been made alot more everyday friendly compared to the 996 with soft suspension that will still blitz around the 'ring in 7'43.

It can be done, as Porsche did indeed prove, but it won't be done by DCX's Chrysler arm... No way, no how. The current SRT-10 is miles ahead of it's predecessor, the R/T-10, but they are completely missing the point of the car by moving it upmarket. It has always been the bad boy American supercar, and that is what made it special. Adding extra leather, better sound deading material, and God forbid exhausts that don't cook the occupants only destroy what the car is all about... Being the "modern Cobra."

The Firepower should indeed be the "luxury" model, but instead of making it expensive because they can, it should be compeditive because it can. Face it, the Firepower has the Corvette set in it's sights. Without the Viper worrying about the regular Corvette, they can focus solely on the Z06, making the Viper a better high-performance car.

viper...upmarket?! uh oh...prepare for america's super muscle car to be turned into a Bent Connie GT! at least, that's what "upmarket" says to ME
