GT5 has a great photomode, one of the best out there. Perhaps the next step for DLC or GT6 is a Cinema Mode. While the cinematic replays PD have designed are already great, I feel it would be a very cool addition to allow for some more creative freedom when "filming" online battles.
They could use the current photomode options as a base for GT5's film camera. Panning Mode 1 can be a tripod that pans with the car. Panning Mode 2 (I think) will be like a dolly or another car following the subject car. Panning Mode 3 is a rig attached to the subject car, or onboard camera. The game could very easily "know" which car you want to follow in the camera move using existing photomode functions. In photomode if you set the focus on a car it will follow (or "track") that car for the specified exposure time you gave (shutter speed).
There are all kinds of things we could do with this. A low Panning Mode 1 set up on the side of the Mulsanne Straight that follows the car with a great doppler effect. A helicopter cam using Panning Mode 2 following the car from above, as it winds through a series of S curves. A fisheye Panning Mode 1 shot on the ground that the car runs over, ala NASCAR footage with "digger cam." And of course the onboard camera, with Panning Mode 3. Maybe a shot of a wheel as it goes over a rumblestrip. Or maybe a close-up shot of backfire coming out of the exhaust. Basically, anything that you can already capture in a still photo, but in motion. With the addition of aperture control for depth of field, shutter speed, duration of the shot, slow motion, etc. The possibilities would be endless.
Now, I'm not sure how easy it would actually be to implement, and obviously we need to have some control over what the starting and ending points of a shot are. Not to mention a way to export video clips, so we could edit and piece them together ourselves would be nice, too. It's just something I thought of. If I recall correctly the first "Driver" game by Reflections had a "Director Mode" where you could choose from several types of camera moves, set the duration of the shots, and determine how they were pieced together to form a complete film. It might be impossible to implement with the PS3's limitations and the insane graphics GT5 has. I don't know.
I really think this would be an awesome feature to implement though. If it could give extended life to the game, it would be very appreciated I'm sure.
