The Citroen Saxo is a supermini that was produced from 1996 to 2003, when it was replaced by the Citroen C2, and was based on the Peugeot 106. In 1997 Citroen built two versions for rallying, the Group A and the F2 Kit Car. The Group A was often a Citroën Cup car from their one-makes-series, and had a standard looking body. The F2 Kit Car was similar to the 106 Maxi, with a F2 Bodykit and was mainly used in France by quite a selection of drivers, and Niall McShea delivered a few very spectacular drives in one in the UK. This F2 car was created before the S1600 category even existed. Never mind the Saxo always was a 1600cc car, Citroën fancied the kit car rules and turned their Saxo into one nevertheless. When the S1600 category started, these S1600 rules did not allow quite as much freedom as the F2 rules. From the body kit the S1600 and F2 Saxos look absolutely identical. But the S1600 Saxo had some lesser tuned engine auxiliaries and a less sophisticated sequential gearbox. When the S1600 rules came, Peugeot just launched the new 206 model and that spelled the end of the 106, but Citroen continued to use the Saxo until 2004 when they started using the C2. The pre-facelift car also featured as a Racing Modification for the Citroen Saxi 1.6i VTS in Gran Turismo 2.
