I would like to get some input from you guys about what old muscle cars have the highest hp after being fully tuned. I would be using it for drag racing.

I have every old muscle car but they are all stock.

So whats your highest horsepower pre 80's car or which one is fastest in a 1/4 mile race?

Can anyone make a list for me?

i have a

69 Camaro z28 RM
with 565bhp weight 1085kg
its nothced up 24 wins for me

but it wont be the fastest, i know you can tune the AC cobra to 700+ bhp and its much lighter... but messing with that car is sacralidge!
i think the buick tunes up to like 900 bhp too but it handles like a dog and is ugly as hell! still if your dragging could be a good bet

I heard the XR/7 couger is fast but the car only starts with just over 300hp so i don't get that. I also heard the charger can get upwards of 900hp but i have yet to see proof of this.

Why isn't there a max hp thread for classics it would be helpfull.

The best I can squeeze out of my Charger is around 750bhp (+/-20) but it's still good for 200mph and fairly quick acceleration.

I never really contribute anything useful, but maybe I can here since I have a few, and I upgraded them all the way. These cars may not be all the way broken in, or maybe they have lost a step with an old engine, but I have bought all available upgrades and changed the oil, even rebuilt the engine in most cases where I bought a car with over 10k miles...

Premium:
Ferrari 512BB '76 - 568hp
Dodge Challenger R/T '70 - 764hp
Chevy Camaro Z28 '69 - 550hp
Jaguar XJ13 Race Car '66 - 679hp
Shelby Cobra 427 '66 - 721hp
Art Morrison Corvette '60 - 641hp
"Grand Touring Garage" 1970 Ford Mustang Trans-Cammer - 741hp

Standard:
Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary '88 - 673hp
Chevy Camaro IROC-Z Concept '88 - 618hp
Buick GNX '87 - 619hp
Jensen Interceptor MKIII '74 - 696hp
Lamborghini Countach LP400 '74 - 513hp
Dodge Charger Super Bee 4216 Hemi '71 - 817hp
Plymouth Cuda Six Pack '71 - 825hp
Plymouth Superbird '70 - 792hp
Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70 - 762hp
Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 '70 - 842hp
Ford GT40 Race Car '69 - 549hp
Mercury Cougar XR-7 '67 - 740hp
"AC Cars" 427 S/C '66 (some British version of the Shelby Cobra??) - 789hp
Shelby GT350R '65 - 573hp
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (C2) Race Car '63 - 730hp
Buick Special '62 - 856hp

Edit: I have no idea which is faster in the quarter. I haven't even raced with most of these cars, something I am working on currently. Sorry for not being so helpful on that front...

ah i thought the buick would top the charts.. ive heard its nice in a straight line but fails at almost everything else, somewhat like the veyron then ;)

The 69 Camaro is a blast to drive. It makes up for horsepower with cornering.

totally agree, if we were to run track times on all these cars even with the hp differences i think the rm cam and the ac cobra would probs be running the fastest... but i guess thats not quarter mile

A lot of the muscle cars, even with all upgrades are big, heavy, and lumbering. The Camaro was a purpose built racing machine for the street, much like the Mustang of the era. I wish we had a Trans-am Mustang to go with the Camaro.

The Buick is the fastest and probably the best one, It actually handles very good with a tune, but the SS, 440 Cuda and 426 Superbee are all above 800 HP also.

The Camaro RM is most likely by far the best handling

After some extensive testing I found the Dodge Challenger R/T RM ’70 to be the fastest drag (and track) old hard top muscle car. It only has 788bhp but is comparatively light. It gets its power down well and the nice power band allows for a good gearbox tune. Top Gear drag takes about 18.4 sec. The Dodge Charger 440 R/T ’70 with 803bhp is a close second at 18.5/18.6 but nowhere near as fast around a track.

If you are looking for max bhp then the Chevelle SS 454 ’70 is an option at 842bhp but is takes about 18.7/18.8 at TG.

If you do include the soft top Cobra then the 427 ’66 at 764bhp does TG in about 17.3… so that would be the fastest drag.
