Clean Run Challenge #11 '97 Honda Civic Type R(EK) RM at Clubman Stage Route 5 Reverse
Fourth Race in the 415pp Honda Civic Competition Seasonal - 5 laps

Specs: 1997 Honda Civic Type R(EK) Race Modified on Comfort Soft Tires.
No added parts. A new Premium Type R RM came to 194hp 845kg @441pp. with initial oil change. Use the power limiter and/or add ballast to stay under the 415pp regulation. Ballast must stay at default position.

I remember this Event being quite a Challenge from a while back. This is a fun little FWD with a screaming soundtrack. A starter Race Car but still a hoot. A race car at a Street Car Event? Ah, who cares-you'll probably be glad to have it for this run.

THE GOAL:
Your fastest Total Race Time. The Race Events are basically Time Trials with moving obstacles (AI). Most are only 5 laps so think of it as a longer Time Trial but with other cars on track. Most races will only last 7-10 minutes. Winning the race is not the end goal-it's the Total Race Time like the latest GT5 Seasonal Overtake Challenges.

THE RULES:

1. No Driving Aids. No SRF, TCS, *ABS, ASM, Active Steering. Driving Line and Transmission Choice are optional. For inexperienced ABS OFF drivers check out this great guide: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=267564&highlight=guide+tO+no+abs

**If you are new to ABS OFF and having difficulty you may use the assist. Experienced no assists drivers are expected to not use it. There will be a separate leaderboard. Please note "ABS" when submitting. Thanks.

2. Tuning Prohibited. No added parts, ballast, weight or engine stages. We may add power if a car is too slow for a decent run but that will be very specific. Brake Balance is all that can be adjusted.

3. Tires. Comfort Softs

4. Track Rules: Only fully clean runs. 2 wheels on track at all times. Rumble Strips are part of the track. The white line is the boundary otherwise. Minimal wall contact OK. It will only slow you down anyway. *No initiated AI contact. This is what will make this a REAL challenge! Avoiding other cars may be the hardest aspect. Approach the driving like it's a real life track day.

*NOTE* For Challenges involving Race Cars, minor contact is acceptable in straight sections only. No initiated contact in corners however. No Dive Bombing.

*Track note* When this Seasonal was originally posted, folks were ricocheting off the wall in Turn 1. None of that here, you may touch the walls accidently but not to change your cars direction.

Note: To be clear on what constitutes a "clean" pass, we will use this rule from the GTP OLR:

You must establish substantial overlap with the car ahead before they reach the corner’s turn-in point to have the right to drive up their inside, or to expect them to leave inside room for you. At least the front of your car should be up to the driver’s position in the ahead car. The ahead driver has the right to be fully committed to the racing line of their choice without any interference if there was no substantial overlap before he turned in.

So if you've made a clean pass according to this rule and the AI initiates contact, that is acceptable.
In some instances a pass may be accomplished by going inside the AI if they've left sufficient room. As long as you don't initiate contact, it's clean. Just use your best judgement, this is supposed to be fun!

5. 10 Maximum Clean Runs. Restarts or dirty Runs do not count toward the total. Winning the race is not necessary for a submission. No deadline for submitting a time.

RM should make it a bit easier. Initially I thought it was going to be in the stock car. Now that would have been a challenge. Just for clarification, when we add ballast does it have to be in the default position?

^Good point about the ballast. Keep it at default so we can stick to the Tuning Prohibited regulation.

Well this is not going to be an easy one to win. After 3 clean runs I've got 5:30.5xx for P4. I still haven't nailed the first turn once. Horrible corner in the dark. Unusually I'm not having trouble keeping it clean, the car being almost uncrashable, even for me, and there are plenty of good passing spots. It's a very rewarding car to drive when you get it right, and such a sweet sound.

Gave this little champ a go for an hour. First off banging walls with understeer, ughh. Calming down and entering turns earlier and tighter made things easier. Ran a B/B of 3/2- you could probably go higher than 2 in the rear. Added my weight 75kg. I do that for most all offline anyway except for CRC's.

That first turn I watch the left hand curb. Just when I see it start to widen I know it's just about time to mash the brake. I've whacked that wall a bunch though. That's one way to know you've gone too far, heh. Maintaining speed up through the tunnel is crucial, the EK loves to push but I push right back shredding the Comforts like I hate their existence.

So tonight got a clean 5:27.662 with a BL of 1:04.720. Won the race but got held up by the last two cars and had a 1:05.9xx on lap 5. Most good laps were very low 1:05's. Had a couple faster runs but got a little smack happy with the AI and walls.

I've got some nice headphones and I kept hearing this clunk, clunk, clunk until I figured out it's the tires over the highway expansion joints. Nice touch from PD.

Nice job NCR, just had a go this morning - so far its a 5.31.275. But theres so much time to be had. This is a really good one, loving the EK.

I put max ballast. May change to lighter ballast, more reduction on the limiter to see if yeilds better times.

I need to crash more. At this rate I'm going to run out of clean runs before I set a time I'm happy with. I was running full ballast so I tried it at half ballast and less power. Did a couple more clean but wasn't any faster.
And I still haven't got that first corner.

That first turn I watch the left hand curb. Just when I see it start to widen I know it's just about time to mash the brake.

Do you mean when you see it or when it actually starts to widen? If it's the latter you're a lot better at braking than me. That wall's taken a hammering.

^Just when I start to see it. Full pedal brake a split second after that, it's never exactly the same. It's tough, I'm trail braking into the turn slightly too. Then getting around a bot at that point makes it even trickier.

Btw Stirling, I tried out your suggestion. Might want to save some frustration for the next combo!

That makes sense then. I'll have another crack at it tomorrow.

Looking forward to that. Comfort hards? :)

Well, what can I say about this one? I seem to have a mental block with city courses in general but I just couldn't win this in the seasonal series. I ended up resorting to SRF and the '08 Civic in order to win this race and the Gathers Drider Civic :guilty:.

I've made a good few attempts and many restarts trying to get that first corner to beat the P11 car before turn 2. Unless slight rubbing of the walls is to be allowed (on the inside, not a big clout on the outside), I can't see me getting a clean run :dunce:. Avoiding the AI is generally not a problem though.

I'm looking around 5:35.xxx and was trying 4/3 and 3/3 on the brakes (DS3 triggers). Too big a differential gave me a lot of understeer, but 3/3 was quite well balanced I thought.

I sat down for 1 1/2 hours tonight. Was a little skeptickal about it, because it was one of the events that I struggled to gold.
But I actually enjoyed it very much. 👍

The EK is a pretty enjoyable to drive :)

Started to add 95 kg (at the end of my session 105) and dropped the power limiter to 91,2% with 180hp (still going up) Set the B/B to 5/3

Made 4 clean races. Never got higher tan 3.place. My first was 5:37xxx, then 5:31:785 and 5:31:747 :boggled:
My best time for the evening: 5:31:367 best laptime 1:05:036

Only one clean run remaining now. I went back to full ballast and a bit of power limiter but it's losing power quite dramatically now so I ended up with full power and less than full ballast. BB at 3/2. I tried 3/3 but kept going sideways. Finally got the first corner right a couple times and improved slightly to 5:30.287 for third place.
I wasted lots of clean runs on 31s and 32s, and I notice everyone's times are pretty close on this one. It's an easy car to go pretty fast in, but finding that extra bit of speed is really difficult. Push a bit too hard and the understeer kills it. I guess that's FWD generally. I suspect it'd go quicker with more weight at the front.

I actually achieved a clean race today: 5:35.599, I was 6.6xx behind P1 in 4th place. Used BB 4/3 for this, full ballast and limited to 192BHP.

Had a short session yesterday and completed one more clean run 5:29:958. Still have 180 hp, but have increased the ballast to 108 kg. B/B 4/3.

I passed the 11th car on the inside, just before turn 2, and he tapped me on my left backend in the turn. Other than that, it was a clean race. Ended again on 3rd place.
First lap was 1:08:0xx Best lap was 1:05:2xx. Had two other 1:05 laps and one 1:06:3

I'm pleased to get under 5:30
