Clean Run Challenge #12 '67 Ferrari 330 P4 Race Car at Cote d'Azur
Second Race in the A-Spec-Expert Series-Historical Racing Car Cup 5 laps

Specs: 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 Race Car on Race Medium Tires.
No added parts. Let me know if don't have this car available and I'll put mine on share. Thanks.

As requested by CRC regular StirlingMoose, we'll be heading to Monaco in one of the most beautiful Race Cars ever built. A lovely backdrop and a classic track will make this an outstanding combo.

THE GOAL:
Your fastest Total Race Time. The Race Events are basically Time Trials with moving obstacles (AI). Most are only 5 laps so think of it as a longer Time Trial but with other cars on track. Most races will only last 7-10 minutes. Winning the race is not the end goal-it's the Total Race Time like the latest GT5 Seasonal Overtake Challenges.

THE RULES:

1. No Driving Aids. No SRF, TCS, *ABS, ASM, Active Steering. Driving Line and Transmission Choice are optional. For inexperienced ABS OFF drivers check out this great guide: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=267564&highlight=guide+tO+no+abs

**If you are new to ABS OFF and having difficulty you may use the assist. Experienced no assists drivers are expected to not use it. There will be a separate leaderboard. Please note "ABS" when submitting. Thanks.

2. Tuning Prohibited. No added parts, ballast, weight or engine stages. We may add power if a car is too slow for a decent run but that will be very specific. Brake Balance is all that can be adjusted.

3. Tires. Race Mediums

4. Track Rules: Only fully clean runs. 2 wheels on track at all times. Rumble Strips are part of the track. The white line is the boundary otherwise. Minimal wall contact OK. It will only slow you down anyway. *No initiated AI contact. This is what will make this a REAL challenge! Avoiding other cars may be the hardest aspect. Approach the driving like it's a real life track day.

*NOTE* Minor corner contact is acceptable in this Event ONLY. The AI cannot be shoved out of the way or hit hard, no dive bombing. The AI likes to brake check here. If it gets too frustrating, reset with another field.

*Track note* The field is your choice. I ran some test runs against the field with a 2J on pole and I had a clear track. Other fields will have some sloppy AI driving especially the 2J at the chicane.

Note: To be clear on what constitutes a "clean" pass, we will use this rule from the GTP OLR:

You must establish substantial overlap with the car ahead before they reach the corner’s turn-in point to have the right to drive up their inside, or to expect them to leave inside room for you. At least the front of your car should be up to the driver’s position in the ahead car. The ahead driver has the right to be fully committed to the racing line of their choice without any interference if there was no substantial overlap before he turned in.

So if you've made a clean pass according to this rule and the AI initiates contact, that is acceptable.
In some instances a pass may be accomplished by going inside the AI if they've left sufficient room. As long as you don't initiate contact, it's clean. Just use your best judgement, this is supposed to be fun!

5. 10 Maximum Clean Runs. Restarts or dirty Runs do not count toward the total. Winning the race is not necessary for a submission. No deadline for submitting a time.

This is going to be lots of fun. The car is such a joy and turns in quick. First runs I ran against the 2J field. He retains the lead and I don't gain on him. Pass the Toyota 7 at start then squeeze my shoulders past a Jag and 63 Vette Grand Sport at turn 1. Drafting up on a 2D and a 67 Ford and able to get past the Ford early lap 2. All AI gives it up way too easily. Almost wish I'd picked a less grippy tire. Oh well, RM's make driving the 330 a bit easier.

First run was a 8:05.599 then 8:02.666. Each time some sloppy driving led to a couple bad laps. Then a 7:58.320 with a BL of 1:34.951. Ran 3/0 BB and need to watch that back end on off balance hard braking and downshifts, it can swing pretty quick.

Great choice Stirling, I'd forgotten all about this Event.

Great choice Stirling:tup:+1

Currently running 8.05.257. replay saved.
Ran against the 2D field, finished 1st
Overtook the other P4 into 1st corner, took the 2j at the left hander at the top of the hill, then the Mk IV and the GT at the hairpin, and the Vette somewhere by the swimming pool section. Caught the 2D and passed him on the last lap just before the tunnel.
Superb event!!! Who needs a 2J to win!!!!

Last night I ran it on RHs by mistake and it was still superb! Acceleration was trickier than anything else.

I went straight to this from a another attempt at the Civic race. This turned out to be an unwise decision as it resulted in a number of priceless historic race cars being turned into piles of twisted metal and splintered fibreglass :boggled:.

Result - a very dirty 9 minutes and a big headache for the sponsors :dunce: Must try harder.

Awful braking/release oversteer on B/B of 4/1 - I don't know if the decel. diff setting is high on the Ferrari. Definitely rear BB 0 and more subtle inputs required I think, but I hope PD sort out these braking issues with MR and 4WD in GT6.

^ Lower the B/B Woodski. I was using 3/0. It's not a car you can jump in and drive easily. Brake only in a straight line and keep a little throttle even in the tightest turns. Don't lift completely entering any tight turns. She's sensitive and likes a gentle touch, heh. Definitely not a point and shoot car especially at Cote. Once you get the feel, it's fun but you still feel like you're on the edge. My kind of car!

When I do this race, I'll give a salute to Lorenzo Bandini, who tragically died after a crash at Monaco in a Ferrari 312 Grand Prix car back in 1967.

(He had won the 24 hours of Daytona earlier in 1967 in this car with Kiwi driver, Chris Amon. Ferrari pulled off a 1-2-3 staged side by side finish.)

Drive Hard.

Glad you're enjoying it, guys. I'm really itching to have a go at this but I won't be able to get a session in till the middle of next week. I did all the races in this event in the Ferrari and this was the toughest. I beat the 2D, probably with a bit of tuning and ABS, but could never catch the 2J. It would be nice to see one of you relegate the washing machine into second place.

Ryk

Motorsport was such a hazardous pursuit in those days. Thankfully nowadays deaths and serious injury are so rare. I find watching races more enjoyable knowing that even in the event of a big crash the drivers are likely to walk away with nothing more than a stiff neck and bruised ego. But from the comfort of my living room, I find vintage racing cars much more fun than their modern counterparts. I'm hoping for more in GT6. A Vanwall round Silverstone, in the rain, that's my idea of heaven.

Whoa, this was though one. Have only completed one dirty run so far. 12th place with a lot of spinning a round. :ill:
Really have to be gentle here, or you are suddently facing the wrong way :scared:

Ha! What on Earth made me suggest this? After an hour of spinning out and bashing everything in sight I finally started to treat this car with the respect it deserves, took it easy, waited for AI to make mistakes, and managed one clean run. I settled with a BB of 4/0 as I found the occasional front lock-up easier to deal with than the release oversteer. I lost a lot of time on the last lap trying too hard to catch the 2D and ended up P2, 8:19.xxx with a BL 1.37. I'm not giving up though.

Edit - Blimey this is addictive. I was going to have a go at the Subaru TT tonight but I couldn't drag myself away from this car. A couple more clean and improved to 8:10.354, still only second place though. I must have spent the best part of 3 laps with that damn 2D in sight and still finished 4s behind. Watching the replay it looked a lot tidier than it felt. And what's with the spare wheel in the back? The extra weight can't be helping and I'm not going to be parked at the roadside changing a wheel with those lunatics tearing past.

^ I'd forgotten to go back to this monster. Glad you posted, it is truly addictive!
I bettered my time a bit and am using a different grid. This one has the 2D in P1 and 2J P2. I can ease past all other cars between turn 1 and Casino turn 4 in lap 1. Then the chase begins. A couple times the 2J has faltered and I've slipped by chasing the 2D but then folded under pressure. Going back in hopes of a win against the upstart Yanks.

Edit: 7:58.133 in second place behind the 2D. BL of 1:34.441 Second place about 4 seconds behind the 2D. The 2J lost it twice that I saw. Then next run with a best Total Time of 7:55.537 several seconds ahead of the 2D for First-yay. Floundering 2J again. Another run with a Total of 7:57.479. This time the 2J had a first lap miscue but recovered to stay on my bumper through L4-5 as I was in P1. The pressure was on! Almost folded pushing too much and had a couple miracle recoveries to win by .559. That was satisfying. I'm done.

This combo would make a great Enduro Arcade. Wish we could set a full Vintage lineup. Even hot laps with the 330 here are a blast. Next up we'll be heading to the 'Ring...Autumn Ring that is.

I might have an attempt at this later. I use DS3 and I've never ran without ABS, so I will set a time with ABS then try later with no ABS 👍

Spent about an hour, and finally managed a clean run. 8:11:763. BL 1:37.1xx
Set the B/B at 3/0. Took NRCthree's advice of always keep a little throttle thru the corners, and use light breaking to keep the balance of the car in check in the corners.👍 That helped a lot.

Had the 2D in front, with the 2J in 4th. After a lot of restarts I managed to pass the 2J on the outside of turn one. Had a light paint trade with the no. 2 placed Corvette when I passed him before the Swiming pool. After that I could chase the 2D. But I never caught him. I ended up 2,5 sec behind.

So far, for me, this challenge have been one of the hardest to get a clean run. I have spent close to 3 hours to get a clean one. I had fun though :)

When you say "tuning prohibited" does that mean no adding parts or no adjusting suspension, transmission, etc?

When you say "tuning prohibited" does that mean no adding parts or no adjusting suspension, transmission, etc?

It's everything stock, no added parts, default settings. The only thing you can change is brake balance. Enjoy!

8:15.278 on my first no-abs attempt 👍

Very fun race and car

I did have one incident on my fourth lap where I clipped the inside curb on the hairpin, and it slowed me up quite a bit. Does that still invalidate my race? I had no other car or wall contact to note of.

^ Shoe. Glad you're taking part. I put minimal wall contact on the OP for this one. That's up to you to determine what's clean. No wall hitting that changes the car's direction for an advantage. My fastest run had a slight bump at the Swimming Pool, slowing me up a bit.

As for tuning prohibited, this Challenge the car's to stay fully stock with all default settings. Aero, Transmission, Drivetrain or Ballast positioning all stay default. Some other Challenges will have some added parts allowed if a car isn't competitive enough to pass the majority of the field.

Ok, I ran complete stock for this.

And just finished a second run at 8:11.620. I can probably drop a bit lower, but not tonight.

Extremely great combo this was! I enjoy these cars and this circuit extremely
