Cloud Gaming: The future or not?

Cloud gaming is in it's infancy, and I don't expect Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo to jump on the bandwagon...at the moment. The big three SHOULD be announcing their next gen consoles at E3 (at least MS should), but I don't see any of them having a dedicated Cloud miscroconsole. Rather, if they DO get into the cloud gaming, I see it as more of an OnLive app or something that would allow you to purchase, say, GT6 from the PS Store and instead of it taking up all that room on your harddrive, it simply streams online. And what's more I would see at least MS, if not Sony, as well, allowing "Console to PC" integration or "Console to Console" where it doesn't matter on the system you play it on, once you log into your cloud account, you can play any game you've purchased simply by logging into your Cloud account.

But, I've seen Cloud Gaming in action and....wow...Dirt 2 runs better on OnLive than it does on the PS3. So much smoother.

Doing the Console to PC and Console to Console would prevent major disasters like the PSN thing from really effecting people 'cause one could jump on their Xbox or PC and continue playing with their DLC and stuff.

But, what do you guys think of Cloud gaming?

If you want to try it, you can go to Onlive.com and sign up. There's a couple other services that will be available later this year, including a free-to-play service that will give you the option of putting up with ads or paying to get rid of them.
 
I don't like the whole cloud theme (for private use)

As it stands for the gaming, I like my retail boxes of games. I like my retail boxes of programs. That's also why i don't use steam and try to avoid all games using Steam DRM.
I want to own something tangible.
Also, except the few exceptions, I play more Single Player than MP (, but I also like Leaderboards).
Mods would die which would be really sad.
No internet connection (it can happen!) = No game

For your Dirt 2 point, compare it to the PC, because it is more comparable with the PC than the PS3 or Xbox.
There is also an other gaming cloud (forgot the name, but i liked their idea more) more focused on demos, free to play ,....

Cloud is a good thing for companies to a certain degree, but at least for me it is mostly useless (with some exceptions)

That's my view for me on it. It could change in the future.
And there are surly a lot of people who could use it.
 
Cloud gaming = fail..

If you need 0 lag on your input, (be it wheel, mouse, whatever) - cloud gaming will never be acceptable..
 
I just don't like the idea that you don't own your own media, god knows we already don't seem to own the consoles in our houses (user licence).

Also broadband the way it is now is just not up to the task of streaming that much information back and forth. Plus if the company goes bust you loose everything.

I do however like the fact you don't have so much hardware that can fail and the graphics will improve constantly.

Hey, look, Sony's doing exactly what I predicted: integrating console to console AND console to PC gaming using cloud technology. YAY! Go Sony!
 
Absolutely. Cloud computing is where all the money is going right now, in 15-20 years almost everything will exist in the cloud.

For all the nuances people complain about like lag or internet availability, the big picture is that it significantly reduces costs, is more efficient, solves the piracy problem completely, scales on the fly, easier to distribute, and so much more. The benefits are just way too huge to be ignored, and they aren't... every single major web site like Twitter, Amazon and Facebook are already on clouds. MMORPGs are on clouds. Anything that needs more resources than a single computer is on a cloud... Xbox Live and PSN are clouds. It's just the way things are going.

Sega tried it back in the 1990's with the Sega Channel for Genesis. The market wasn't ready for it then, but some day it will be.

Next will be a cloud gaming services for PSN and XBL. Where, you never download the game, just play it via the cloud. Of course, you'll have to pay extra for that...but...PSN already has Plus...XBox already has...well it's Microsoft, they'll charge ya extra for Cloud Gaming. But, the important thing is...HDDs end the end will be used to store DLC content, backup data, movies and music. Heck DLC content could stay in the cloud too...but we need a back of all the data incase the internet goes down.
 
Hmm with recent happenings at SONY I don't see myself signing up for any remote data storage TBH.

Haha, nice one. A year ago we were in the middle of the PSN Outage, people were obviously angry. They may have incripted passwords now using safer measures, but if you have PSN you are still signed on a remote data storage, your personal data are on the cloud already.

Now, I'm bumping this thread after year because there are chances this is going to be a leading technology in the future, gaming on the cloud, let's sumarize the benefiets it could bring:

PRO's
- No need of expensive hardware to play recent games.
- You can play recent games on your tablet, on your notebook, on your netbook.
- No need to install stuff.

Sound like revolutionary stuff, something that could influence even console gaming. But are we sure it works properly?What do you think about https://www.onlive.com and their services ? Any cloud gamers out there wanting to share your opinion?

Now what about CON'S
-Lag?
-Input Lag?
-Even more Lag?
-Connection dependant performances?
-No room for modders?
-Cloud subscription costs?

Let's talk about it.
 
Just another point to add about cloud gaming. Because some games are very heavy on system resources the people who own the computers don't allow access to the graphics options (I had a trail of onlive and i couldn't adjust graphics I could be wrong tho).

Are you saying even with the cloud computers frame rate wasn't perfect because of unoptimized graphic options? If that's the case, they better figure out how to allow them. The whole point of cloud gaming is to enjoy new titles at good fps/details without owning the hardware.

Well, they're probably limited as to what kind of quality they can provide. People daydream about playing Crysis with all details maxed out, but the reality may be quite different.
