Cockpit, build or buy?

I want a cockpit for racing but I don't know if I should buy or build.

It depends completely on what you are looking for in a rig, how much you want to spend, and your ability to build a rig.

Check out the sim hardware forum for an idea of what's out there.

I'm building one myself, for 3 reasons.

1) I can do it for less money than what most companies are asking for.
2) I can make it exactly how I want it to be, with no compromises.
3) It will have absolutely no flex in it. Some of the commercially available ones are shocking, when you see how much they flex.

If you have the time, inclination, and a degree of skills (ie- you can use a saw), then give it a go yourself.

Here is a link with blue prints and all.I would suggest not taping your pedals to the base mind you.Two sided velcro works better.Add a 2 by 2 piece of wood to the back at the top for better support.Slap a paint job on it and a cup holder and for 50 bucks your cruising.

Mine is sort of a mix. I'm using the seat and some of the hardware from the Kyle Bush Playseat which I then mounted on a piece of plywood with reverse mounted pedals. G27 wheel and pedals. The whole thing sits on a set of 6 castors so I roll it out of the way. Everything is carpeted just like the floorboard of a real car and I wrapped the metal parts in carbon fiber. Pretty awesome looking if I do say so, lol.

built mine out of pvc tubing and some mdf for the wheel and pedals mounts - took me about 2 hours to finish, and that was with a hand saw- if you don't want it to come apart, ever? Use crazy glue, not pipe fitting stuff. I could care less if it's water tight, I just didn't want it separating at the joints. Total cost was about $40 iirc.

Oh, and I use a horrible, horrible "video rocker" thing for my seat. It totally works, but 3/10 for comfort.

I made mines like for no charge at all I found some good 2x4's in my back yard some ply wood then found a old cover like bed cover or blanket that was not used at the house and whalah I would post pics lol I don't know how though I will soon as I find out how

All the reasons listed here are all good reasons why you should build your own rig. You can build it how you want it. And most of the time you can build it for much more than companies are asking for.I built my rig for less than £40, which is very cheap for a rig. Oh, and the cheapest commercial rig I've ever seen still costs well over £200 GBP.

Here is a lap rig I did myself. If I had unlimited space I would have done a proper rig, but this works for my situation. On ps1 og gran turismo I had a sweet rig made out of a real race car seat out of an open cockpit sportscar and a mad cats wheel. Oh the fun of being young and single.

i built one from MDF and a peugeot 205 GTi seat

it was cheap, and now has about 200k miles on it with no problems
