Happy new year, college hoops fans! This is the January thread of college hoops. Same business as the past few months, only that this is now about January. What's so special about January? The start of conference play. That's what. No more of (and I'm generalizing. Not relating to any real schedule) matching up North Carolina against Iona. No more of pitting California State-Northridge against Washington. No more Kentucky against Chicago State. I'm talking about your Michigan vs. Ohio State, Duke vs. North Carolina, Maryland vs. Boston College, Gonzaga vs. San Diego, LSU vs. Tennessee (men or women), Detroit vs. Illinois-Chicago, and stuff like that. You never find out how bad (as in good) you are until you play against teams in your conference. That's how you make your money. It also means that I'll be doing college basketball full-time until college football is done.
Big match later this week will be Louisville heading to Kentucky to settle the Battle for the Bluegrass. Only game I can report is that Cincinnati beat Louisville on the road. Something I CAN talk about has to do with unbeatens. So here's my way to start off the new year:
John-itorial: Pay No Mind to Unbeatens
You are likely to run the table in football, but it's much tougher to do in basketball. People are likely to disagree with me, but all the different tournaments and easy games and such are just there to MAKE you lose. It's okay to lose a game in basketball because it is very unlikely you can run the table from game one all the way through the National Championship game. Teams are going to lose. It's all about who loses least often en route to the National Championship. You can finish unbeaten, but everyone HAS to lose at some point. A friend of mine from Houston is a graduate of Winona State University in Minnesota. Winona State set the record for most successive wins in a season before losing to non-football Division 2 school, Barton College in the D2 National Championship game aired on CBS. It's all about taking a few losses in the regular season, but making COMPLETELY sure you don't lose where it matters most- March Madness. Teams here in Texas like Sam Houston State and Texas-Arlington weren't beaten. Both have taken at least one loss apiece now. It's good to be unbeaten. Just don't think every remaining unbeaten will stay that way. (I can't believe I'm saying this as a college football fan) It isn't like in FBS division football in which more than one team can finish unbeaten. Somebody has to lose. Doesn't matter when. Do NBA teams go unbeaten? Not even the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls were perfect despite finishing 72-10. Enjoy unbeaten status, just make sure to beat the team you play against next to be commended and honored for beating up other teams.
That's all from me. January 2008 hoops. Reply away!
