GTPlanet, it's that magical time of the year! Forget about the presents you want but not getting for Christmas ^_^, it's all about the Bowl Games. Now sure, there is no playoff system in college football, but it doesn't mean that there still can't be enough fun for teams to have in the postseason.

Courtesy of Yahoo, here is a link to all the matchups in this season's Bowl Games. Everything from the New Orleans Bowl (played in Lafayette, LA thanks to the recent hurricanes) to the Rose Bowl will be talked about before, during, and after the Bowl Season. I haven't set up my own Bowl preview yet, so here's the link to all of this season's Bowl Games and the teams who will contest for the win:

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/scoreboard?w=15&c=all&refresh=0

Offer up your previews as Bowl Season doesn't start until December 20th.

GTPlanet, welcome to my Bowl Game thread for 2005. Every Bowl from the New Orleans Bowl to the Rose Bowl. I got your back on this.

The 2005 New Orleans Bowl - Lafayette, LA

Southern Mississippi {Golden Eagles; Conference USA}
- vs. -
Arkansas State {Indians; Sun Belt}

"The Big Un-Easy"
GTPlanet, due to the recent wave of hurricanes earlier this year, the Louisiana Superdome could not be used for this game. Tulane calls the Louisiana Superdome home, but they've had to go to several different places across America and play. So as a result of a hurricane-torn southern Louisiana, this game will be played in Lafayette, LA. I don't know if it is the stadium where Louisiana-Lafayette plays or what.

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are one of the toughest teams in all of Conference USA behind UTEP, Tulsa, and Memphis. Having dealt with Hurricane Katrina's devastation, Southern Mississippi has done a great job to be at 6-5. Maybe not their best-ever season, but at least they preservered. Hey, Katrina didn't only affect Louisiana, you know. On the other end, the Sun Belt is in the house! Having a very sunny season were the Arkansas State Indians had their way with everybody else. Arkansas State finished 6-5 on the year, but most importantly, their first ever Bowl Game in Division 1. One team will finish 7-5 while the other will finish 6-6. Who pulled it off, the C-USA veterans or the first time bowlers?

By the way, if you watch ESPN Sunday Night Football, you will note the first college usage of the recent NFL graphics of starting lineups. Southern Miss played pretty sloppy, getting penalties and such, blowing good drives, and all that. The first half solved nothing as it was a 10-10 deadlock. Since then, you'd have to believe Arkansas State were sort of the villians considering the hell Southern Mississippi been through. The "heroes," then, would go on to win over the Sun Belt.

FINAL SCORE:
Southern Mississippi - 31
Arkansas State - 19

MY POSTGAME COMMENTARY:
Congratulations to Southern Mississippi. Southern Miss seen Hell but managed to do the elusive task- make it to a Bowl Game. People say that Bowl Games are meaningless rewards, well, how rewarding is it to have Hurricane Katrina screw up your school, but as a football team, still deliver on game day or game night? They finish 7-5, but finishing 7-5 getting the football season underway. They are true winners. Let's not second guess Arkansas State too. I personally wish they can build off of this victory and get more big victories in the Sun Belt next year. Good job to both teams.

The 2005 GMAC Bowl - Mobile, AL

Toledo {Rockets; Mid-American Conference}
- vs. -
Texas-El Paso {Miners; Conference USA}

"High-Maintenance"
GTPlanet, welcome to the GMAC Bowl featuring two incredible talents. Before they kick the pigskin, let's meet the two teams. So they aren't Penn State. So they aren't Southern Cal. So they aren't Texas (even though one is from Texas). Who cares? You want BCS talent? Watch the BCS Bowl Games early next year. Toledo has been a dominanting MAC prescence, though this year has been a little down for the Rockets. They won about nine or ten games last season, but still have a chance to notch up another big win. What a C-USA debut for Texas-El Paso! The school was formerly known as "Texas Western" back in the 1960s. College basketball types may remember the days of Texas Western, winning the National Championship in basketball. The Miners may be very far from a football crown, but anything is possible. If there was a playoff in college football, UTEP would be a serious Cinderella. The boys from western Texas met Toledo at the GMAC Bowl. It was two GMAC Bowls back when Miami (Ohio) superstar Ben Roethlisberger was a clutch QB. Are we going to see any high-powered offense in this one? Find out along with me.

Inside of 5 minutes into the Second Quarter, UTEP were getting their asses handed to as Toledo easily led 21-7. Into the 3rd, Toledo steadily pounded UTEP as it was 31-13. UTEP has one last quarter to redeem themselves and get a horrible first three quarters behind them. Afterwards, a talented team looked about as bad as Syracuse.

Toledo - 45
Texas-El Paso - 13

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:

I honestly didn't see all of this game. When I was braking in between my game and the GMAC Bowl, I was shocked to see Texas-El Paso do so poorly. UTEP is no pushover- they just lost to a better team. This is why I say the MAC is one of the most underrated conferences in Division 1-A college football. There is an abounding gold mine of talent in the MAC conference who make pretty good NFL talent. Look at names like Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich to name a few. MAC contenders on great teams have a chance to be NFL stars, maybe even notch up some Pro Bowl selections, not to mention getting that Super Bowl ice on their rings. For UTEP and Conference USA, this has been the end of the rookie C-USA Championship deal. Congratulations to both teams for making it this far.

SPECIAL NOTE: I would like to send my condolences to the Dungy family for the suicide death of James Dungy. My thoughts and prayers go out to friends and family affected by this death. Very sad death considering what time of year this is. Again, my thoughts and prayers to the Dungy family for the death of James Dungy.

The 2005 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl - Las Vegas, NV

Brigham Young {Cougars; Mountain West Conference}
- vs. -
California {Golden Bears; Pacific 10}

"Press Your Luck"
No, this isn't 1984. BYU may not be looking for a "Cougar Comeback," but they will meet up against a team that ranked as high as #4 in recent times, California. The Brigham Young Cougars didn't have to travel very far to get to good old Sin City. They are arriving in Vegas with a 6-5 and a 3-3-5 defensive package. On the other end is a team which excels in basketball and football, California. Better known as Cal, even better referred to as the Golden Bears. The California boys are a "NoCal" bunch operating out of Berkley, CA. Who could get it done and win it all in Vegas?

Cal got the ball as BYU's defense was lackluster- kicking off the ball out of bounds, some sloppy secondary defense, not to mention a foolish Personal Foul (late hit out of bounds). California took her to the house in easy fashion from the 6. Late in the Second Quarter, the game was deadlocked at 14, but Cal punched in a 42-yd Touchdown Run. At the half, it's 21-24 as the Golden Bears are looking VERY golden.

FINAL SCORE:

Brigham Young - 28
California - 35

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Clearly, California was the better team. BYU could have made a late surge, but the fact that they've had 11 penalties in the first half and some sloppy defending, they were thankful they even had a chance to pull the upset. Maybe since the game was played on a Mountain West field (Sam Boyd Stadium; UNLV), there seemed to be more BYU fans than California fans. California is a solid Pac-10 team, and they shown to be a big, impervious force against BYU. No Cougar comeback here, sadly. The Cougars defeated themselves, basically.

The 2005 San Diego Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl - San Diego, CA

Colorado State {Rams; Mountain West Conference}
- vs. -
Navy {Midshipmen; Independent}

"Pushing Up Poinsettias"
San Diego, California is in the house. There was one thing I didn't know about San Diego. I never realized how close to the Mexican border San Diego is. Only other big non-California cities closest to the border Are El Paso and Brownsville... both Texas cities. Only good college football team in San Diego are the San Diego Toreros in Division 1-AA. So San Diego plays home to two great teams fortunate enough to garner winning seasons- Colorado State and Navy. The Navy Midshipmen are the best service academy football team, and they've shown it on the field. Their opponents in wins made them all say "man overboard!" Hook 'em Horns... but not the Burnt Orange team. Instead, it is the team whose helmets look like the St. Louis NFL helmets except for green instead of blue (not hating), Colorado State. The Rams are a great MWC team themselves. While Texas Christian dominated the ranks of the Mountain West (TCU plays in Houston Bowl later this year!), it didn't mean that Colorado State was a little-known bunch. They did better than their Big XII rivals, Colorado. So let's get this bronco buster started!

I was sort of stuck on what would have been a huge blowout from the Las Vegas Bowl, but when I saw this game at around 12:53 AM CST, it was 6:50-something in the 4th Quarter, with Navy BEATING Colorado State's behinds 51-30.

FINAL SCORE:
Colorado State - 30
Navy - 51

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY
The Rams got bowled over by America's Team, the Navy Midshipmen. In the event of a blowout, you have to consider some things. It takes hard work to manufacture 6 or more wins. Many teams play 11 games, so if you want to win, you need to win 6 or more. If you're a BCS-conference school or a BCS buster, you'll need 9 wins and a good rank. For Colorado State, they fell apart and in a big way. Navy just proved to be the better team. This was a nasty way to lose, though I've seen worse.

The 2005 Fort Worth Bowl - Fort Worth, TX

Kansas {Jayhawks; Big XII}
- vs. -
Houston (Cougars; Conference USA)

"Rock Chalk Jayhawk and Roll"
Being a Houstonian, I'm proud to see one of our two universities play in a Bowl Game. That would be the University of Houston. Houston came back from a 3-8 finish last year to winning 6-5 for the regular season. The scarlet and white are heading into a big game with a chance to maybe build on this year to maybe make a run for the Top 25. The Cougars are going to need all the help they can if they want to be as good of a ranked team as Texas Christian, for example. I don't think they're going to be #1 in the nation in a little-appreciated conference, but if they want to tell the big boys that Houston is not a pushover team, they'll have to bring it. Now for the real surprise of the season. Kansas with a winning season. You read right. Let me state this carefully... Kansas... winning... season. You can credit their defense for making things hell against the six teams they defeated. The Jayhawks aren't a basketball team anymore, at least for one night. This is going to be killer. A Top 20 offense meets a Top 20 defense. Both teams are explosive on their plan. And if defense wins championships, Kansas may have an edge here. An edge, however, won't win you anything if your team's offense can't cover for you. If Houston wins, this will be a big win, even if their opponent is Kansas- the worst team in the Big XII North.

First off, Kansas muffed a Houston punt, but ran that bad boy for 85 yards to the House for six + the extra point. Funny that Houston has "no playbook." They do plays by memory, and Kevin Kolb (Houston, QB) may have done a little too much at unecessary times, leading to a few bad decisions. Kevin Kolb had a drive in which he was knocking down 3rd Down Conversion after 3rd Down Conversions, but their Red Zone offense was suspect. But Houston would get on the board with a 21-yard three pointer from the left hash mark. Kansas would score on sort of a sidearm pass all done in complete secrecy on the field. The score was 14-3 as the Cougars were reeling with 12:49 to go in the Second Quarter. Kolb has over 9,530 offensive yards, the best all-time in Houston Cougars history. Houston put the ball into the End Zone on a Quarterback Draw that ended up in a review... and a 14-10 score as the Jayhawks led at the half. After the break, Houston came out swining, unforunately a hard throw ends up as an interception. Then, the same shovel pass ended up in another Kansas TD, so it's 21-10 now after the Kolb pick. Field goal kicking was also suspect for the Cougars, but a 44-yard long ball connected to bring the Coogs at 21-13. This means that if the Cougars scored again, they'd have to go for two to tie the game. A Jayhawks blowout was being perserved as Simmons (Kansas) ran it in for the TD to make it 28-13 for KU. Afterwards, Houston's offense was stuck in neutral as they got embarassed by the Big XII North's sorriest football team. Disappointing loss? Maybe. We'll see where this game ranks in my usual commentary once the Rose Bowl is done.

FINAL SCORE:
Kansas - 42
Houston - 13

MY POST GAME COMMENTARY:

After looking at this game, Houston's had oppurtunities to fight back, but the supporting cast for the Scarlet and White of Houston just cannot execute. For the Cougars, they have next season to build up on to try to build up the spirits of their football team. They have a good base, and what's a good base without a foundation to operate with? As far as Kansas goes, they are still a basketball school. They just shown they can play pigskin, even if for only one night. To me, this is a game Houston could have won had it been for better pass efficiency and better coverage. Another element could be Kolb's decision making. It seems like he tries to do too much at one time. Houston's Bowl Game losing streak is now 6. Okay... I'll admit. Kansas did fine. VERY fine. Being a Houstonian, it's sad for me to say this... Houston underachived against an improved Kansas Jayhawks team. In basketball, this would be no big deal, but in football, this was not the Christmas gift Houstonians were hoping for.

SPECIAL NOTE: Since I got a new computer for Christmas ^_^, my updates are going to come pretty slow. Give me maybe a few days, maybe 1-5. I will have Sheraton Hawaii Bowl results as soon as I can get to it.

The 2005 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl - Honolulu, HI

Nevada {Wolfpack; Western Athletic Conference}
- vs. -
Central Florida {Golden Knights; Conference USA}

"Ice Breakers"
Hawaii. This is the place where guys want to meet cute girls on the beach, and girls want to wear shirts talking about surfing and times being better on the beach. But it is also the home to a good football team... minus the "good." Hawaii won't be home favorites in this match because they had a horrible season missing star QB Timmy Chang. With no Hawaii, we have a wide-open match. Just like a match, there's fire in the two teams that ARE playing tonight. Central Florida is based in Orlando, FL. They basically know what paradise is about. The Golden Knights make their first Bowl Game in Division 1-A. UCF wanted to play like champion and make this first-ever bowl a memorable one. The bowling debutantes met up against a very talented Nevada team. Perhaps like a radio station, some people just can't pick up why Nevada is in the postseason. Well, the Wolfpack knocked off a BIG opponent, Fresno State. Handing Fresno State that disappointing loss could be the biggest win this WAC team has ever acheived this season. Forget the volleyball, the surfing, the cute girls (well, at least for a few hours), because this is a football matchup unlike any other.

After two UCF plays from scrimmage, both went for touchdowns. Afterwards, the two teams exchanged offensive fortitude to make things 28-20 in favor of Nevada. UCF's on the ropes! In the second half, they continued to battle each other in the 78 degree weather until overtime. For what I know, UCF and Nevada both connected touchdowns, but UCF didn't hit the PAT. Nevada connected theirs, and sealed the win. This goes a lesson to many of you. Point afters are NOT givens. They are just as important as first downs.

FINAL SCORE:

Nevada - 49, OT
Cental Florida - 48

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
I didn't get to see all of the game after the second half, and this had to be a hell of a game. Think about it. You got two teams who are heavy-duty scoring threats. These dudes took each other to the proverbial wood shed. The game was so close, Overtime had to be called. For Central Florida, they should be happy despite losing in Overtime. The reason UCF should be happy is because they made a message that not only Conference USA, but also the nation should listen. Central Florida was for real. Central Florida got enough wins to make it to the postseason. Central Florida went from a winless season to a winning season. THAT IS NOT EASY. It's actually sad that they had some wicked offense to begin the game, but couldn't weigh down Nevada. The Wolfpack are hellaciously talented and deserving of this win. You don't knock off Fresno State and finish losing. They wanted the win, they got it. And boy did they ever!

The 2005 Motor City Bowl - Detroit, MI

Memphis {Tigers; Conference USA}
- vs. -
Akron {Zips; Mid-American Conference}

"All-Motor"
GTPlanet, this is all about the Motor City Bowl and Detroit. What's so special about Detroit? It's the home of MoTown music, most of America's automobiles (especially the Big Three), electronica music, and for you rock lovers... home to Kid Rock. It's also home to the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Red Wings, the University of Detroit Mercy Titans, and a lot of other stuff... and two teams with winning records. Akron can recall this place very well. Ford Field is where the Zips upset the Northern Illinois Huskies for the 2005 MAC title. Now, they have to deal with one of the hottest names that isn't last named Leinart or Young... and that's DeAngelo Williams. The Memphis Tigers could use Willams' talent and Tiger's explosive offense and defense.

I didn't see this game because my brother wanted to take me shopping for clothes, so I couldn't see the game on TV. But from what I've seen, it looked like a game on the line with Memphis getting the "W."

FINAL SCORE
Memphis - 38
Akron - 31

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Football isn't a one-player game. There may be one star that outshines the other 1st Team Offense, Defense, and Special Teams, but what good is it if none of the other players contribute to the star player's cause? I knew that since Louisville left for the Big East, Memphis was the team to beat in Conference USA, and it showed all year long. As for Akron, any team who rises from the dead to being postseason stars are truly winners in my book. That's the thing some people tend to forget. When a team makes it to the postseason, both teams are winners, just that one must be the big winner, and Memphis was too much, unfortunately.

The 2005 Motor City Bowl - Orlando, FL

Clemson {Tigers; Atlantic Coast Conference}
- vs. -
Colorado {Buffaloes; Big XII}

"Champions Only"
Both of these two schools have been National Champions before. Both may not be in championship form, but are champions heading into the Champs Sports Bowl. The Clemson Tigers looked to end a somewhat disappointing season by beating Colorado's Buffaloes. Let's see who pulled the trick.

It was all or mostly defense, but Clemson managed to pull away. It isn't a blowout since it's not more than 14 points, but it is a big win for the Tigers to get this win.

FINAL SCORE:
Clemson - 19
Colorado - 10

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY
Some people call the 2005 Big XII season as "Texas and the 11 Dwarfs. Colorado may have been disappointing, but they've shown to be the best in the Big XII North. That's edging out Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Missouri, and Nebraska. Colorado has hope for the new season as they hope to rebound and maybe be better than this year. Clemson's done quite well. They get a big win after struggling somewhat in the season. Maybe next year, they'll likely be the Iowa of the ACC, in terms of a talented team likely to be a bigtime sleeper. With a lot more luck, they could make a HUGE run to get their second National Title since 1981. Good luck to both teams next season.

The 2005 Motor City Bowl - Phoenix, AZ

Arizona State {Sun Devils; Pacific-10}
- vs. -
Rutgers {Scarlet Knights; Big East}

"Long Time Coming"
College basketball in a high school... now college football on a baseball field. What's wrong with this world? If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Oakland and Minnesota play on baseball fields in the NFL? Well, who says college can't have at some action? Two teams will carry, kick, and throw the rock in the home of the 2001 World Series Champions, Chase Field- the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. But this isn't about juiced baseball batters, this is about two colleges with exceptional firepower. The "home" team would be the Arizona State Sun Devils. I normally say that Arizona State is the best football team in Arizona, the Sun Devils had sort of a disappointing season. Teams like Oregon

As the game came along, both offenses exploded as Rutgers drew first blood. Arizona State and Rutgers continuously went at it as Rutgers led 24-17 at the break. Late in the game, Arizona State's up 45-33. But it wasn't until Rutgers cashed in a wonderful touchdown with 2 Minutes to go. TWO MINUTE WARNING, BABY! Rutgers doesn't get the Onside Kick in their favor and are out of Timeouts. Arizona State gets the Onside Kick, runs for a first down... Game Over. If you ask me, this is a quality loss for Rutgers. Remember. They haven't been to a Bowl Game since 1978. They didn't win that game, but they played like there was no tomorrow. Rutgers had a shot at the upset, but didn't happen.

FINAL SCORE:
Arizona State - 45
Rutgers - 40

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY
Rutgers has a lot to be happy about despite losing. There's promise for next year. Just keep at it and stay strong in the Big East, Rutgers. As for Arizona State... great job. You cap off another good season with a big win.

The 2005 MPC Computers Bowl - Boise, ID

Boise State! - {Broncos; Western Athletic Conference)
- vs. -
Boston College - {Eagles; Atlantic Coast Conference}

(! = indicates host school)

"Boise in da' Hood"
Boise, Idaho is coming up. Why should you care? It's because the MPC Computers Bowl is here. If you want well-known, glamourous cities, look to Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or some other city with a Bowl. Boise, ID is home to a team that can play sports very well. That would be Boise State University- the best team in Idaho, and one of the best in the WAC conference. The Broncos are ready to trot the grid

At the end of the first half, Boston College was embarassing Boise State 24-0. Second half adujustments REALLY needed so this game doesn't become Boise State/Georgia all over again. Unlike that game, Boise State rallied back and had a HUGE chance to upset #19 Boston College. But a pick in the End Zone (I believe) left the boys in blue... feeling blue. If this is the MPC Computers Bowl, the Broncos' hard drive got crashed when they thought they seen paydirt. Or blue paydirt here. Still, you can't fault Boston College for going all out even to come up short.

FINAL SCORE:
Boise State! - 21
Boston College - 27

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Boise State is still a great team. With Dan Hawkins taking over for Colorado next year, he hopes to bring promise to the Colorado bunch as he's done for Boise State. The challenge for BSU will be to build off of this season and stay strong, maybe even challenge being a BCS buster. Boston College didn't have a bad first foray into the ACC. They will certainly be a team to watch next season. They may end up harking back to glory like the 1984 Boston College Eagles with Doug Flutie. Both teams should be KILLER next season.

The 2005 MasterCard Alamo Bowl - San Antonio, TX

Michigan
- vs. -
Nebraska

"Remember the Alamodome!"
GTPlanet, this game is in San Antonio as we get set for the MasterCard Alamo Bowl. I've been to San Antonio before, just never through the city on tour or anything. From what I can say, San Antonio is a very nice city that's actually hotter than here in Houston. There's also a lot of hills and bumps around, since you're not very far from the Texas hill country. Speaking of hills, both of the combating teams in this match have had plenty of ups and downs, but managed to make the postseason. The ranked boys are the Michigan unit out of Ann Arbor, MI. The Wolverines are perhaps one of the greatest college football teams in America. They have so much history, so much talent, and all their big rivalry games especially Michigan/Ohio State. The team they face may not be Buckeye scarlet, but the scarlet of Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are ready to play underdog and upset the #20-ranked Wolverines. Let's see which storied unit got it done.

This was an offensive war. Some great moves and sugar-sweet plays ensued. Some said the game was poorly officiated. But in the end, a freaky play was all set up as Michigan's miserable season ends in a big heartbreak, and has their first five-loss season since 1984. BIG upset and a big win for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Big XII. Not to upset any Michigan fans, but I think this is the second-straight loss by Michigan to a Big XII team (Texas) decided by 7 points or less. Whoa! Now I'm the Stat Boy! ;-) Anyhow, this is a sad loss.

FINAL SCORE:
#20 Michigan - 28
Nebraska - 32

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY
Michigan usually plays in January bowls. This has been a tough season ever since losing to Notre Dame. People were saying throughout the season that Michigan was done, not having a great year and all. Thing is, they worked to make it to the Bowl Games. They've done a great job to win their games and hardly ever give up. I will say this. Teams are going to have bad years, but the challenge is to have a winning season. You have a winning season, you're rewarded with a nice Bowl Game match. Do really well, and there may be a January Bowl for you. I will say this- Michigan is going to have a better year next year, maybe win 8-10 games and possibly finish the regular season in the Top 15 or Top 10. For Nebraska, congratulations on beating one of the Big Ten's toughest teams. It isn't easy beating Michigan and getting away with it. Of course, Nebraska is also a historic unit, probably famous for the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Well, that's all. Just work on next year, get some solid recruiting, and come out fighting come September.

The 2005 Emerald Bowl - San Francisco, CA

Georgia Tech {Yellow Jackets; Atlantic Coast Conference}
- vs. -
Utah {Utes; Mountain West Conference}

"Emeralds are Forever"
Across the Golden Gate Bridge we go to San Francisco, CA. This is a West Coast Bowl with two teams. One represents the Mountain Time Zone, then one in the Eastern Time Zone. One had the ultimate Cinderella story, and the other is the second-best team in Georgia. Just like the Insight Bowl, we're playing on a baseball field specially-made for football. You baseball fans should know this place because this is lovely SBC Park (or is it Candelstick Park?). This game's sponsor is Emerald, and you'll know about it if you like eating Emerald Nuts.

Sunny California wasn't really sunny today. The field was wet as rains soaked up the Bay Area. Utah gets the ball first and drives it up the field completing three for three passes to take it to the house. You know how people say that extra points are givens? Well, Utah didn't hit theirs, so it's 6-0, Utah to begin. Give Utah three minutes, they'll take it to the house. They led 13-0 at the end of the first. Not even one minute into the second, and Utah got another touchdown and the PAT in half a minute. It is now a 20-0 blowout until Georgia Tech finally connects with a touchdown and PAT to make it 20-7. To end the First Half, GT had some adjustments to make as they trail Utah by double (20-10). Then, the Utes only made a field goal. Afterwards into the Fourth, they connected a nice touchdown pass, went for two, and the Utes are embarassing GT 31-10. Around 8:34 in the fourth, the Utes cash in a beautiful 41-yard touchdown run. Speaking of cash, Utah's looking like a million dollars and GT's looking bankrupt. It's now 38-10. And that's how it ended. Completely ugly game.

FINAL SCORE:
Georgia Tech - 10
Utah - 38

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
This was a disappointing game for the ACC and their participant, Georgia Tech. Utah is a great team, and though they haven't had the magical season they had last season, they do finish with a win stating that they can't be beat as long as there's plenty of heart and solid playmakers who refuse to lose. GT came this far and get embarassed, being shut out all second half. If they want to compete with Boston College, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and even Miami, they can't keep doing this if they want to climb up the ACC leaderboard. Exhultation for Utah, shame for Georgia Tech. Dig?

The 2005 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl - ???, ??

Oregon {Ducks; Pacific-10}
- vs. -
Oklahoma {Sooners; Big XII}

""
Back in 1983 or 1984, there was a classic at the Holiday Bowl

The wonderful Keith Jackson teamed up with Dan Fouts to call the game on ESPN. After the first half, the Ducks were looking to depress the Sooners as they lead 7-3. Throught the Second Half, Oklahoma added two touchdowns to their tally to make things 17-7 in favor of the Sooners upsetting Oregon. The upset isn't complete, though. It's just inside of six minutes left in the game. Late in the game, a rather controversial Pass Interference call inside of four minutes gave Oregon 1st and Goal inside the Oklahoma 5. Cash in the TD, PAT, and only three points with 3:30 left in the game. That's right, 17-14. Under one minute, Oregon had a chance at a big win, but they get picked off by OU, and that was basically it, even if Oklahoma got the Unsportsmanlike Conduct call after the pick. And that's how it ended.

FINAL SCORE:
#6 Oregon - 14
Oklahoma - 17

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
This is disappointing. If you're going to be ranked #6 in the nation and be out of the BCS Bowls, you have to absolutely hate yourself if you are Oregon. In simpler terms, this is more like "all this... for nothing." Oregon has a chance to get their revenge next season in Eugene. As for Oklahoma, many would think OU is overrated. Well, they shown to not be as disliked as many believe. Fact of the matter is, who gets it done will get it done. And the Sooners did just that. As far as this game goes, that's it. Holiday Bowl is over. It was as much of a close finish as last night's MPC Computers Bowl.

Hey, go ahead and comment. I'm just here to give out scores, feel free to share your comments as the Bowl season plays itself out. This is YOUR thread, not mine!

Did you see that last play of that game? I felt special, i thought i was about to see a play that tops the CAL/Stanford play. But NOOooOO! Did the player that got tackled at the end know that Preston who's WAY faster than him was behind him? Or that there is so much field on the other side? Guess not. And the flag? It would've been off-set and the TD would've counted. :mad: I'm just mad at the play. What would've been. :(

BTW, JohnBM01 when is Virginia Tech playing?

JFM, your Virginia Tech Hokies will play January 2, 2006. They'll face the Louisville Cardinals in the Gator Bowl. I don't know if they call it the Toyota Gator Bowl or not anymore, but the Hokies will play January 2. They won't play this year, but next. Having said that, scores from the four Bowls on Friday are coming up.

Maybe a BCS Bowl would be in their stocking stuffer, JFM. Considering Miami vs. Virginia Tech's rivalry, ANYTHING can happen. Even big shockers. Now, on to the latest batch of scores and other stuff to try to sound cool:

The 2005 Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl; Nashville, TN

Minnesota {Golden Gophers; Big Ten}
- vs. -
Virginia {Cavaliers; Atlantic Coast Conference}

"Comeback Hotel"
It's the Big Ten vs. the ACC in Nashville, TN. I'll admit. I'm not a country music fan, but Nashville is the Music City. Two teams will make their own music. You'll hear the sound of long balls being thrown into the End Zone for touchdowns, massive hits by cornerbacks and free safties, the marching bands of two universities, cheerleaders doing their thing, and several thousands of cheering by the crowd in Nashville. The Golden Gophers are cute and cuddly creatures, but they are anything but on the football field. Virginia doesn't have a rodent for a mascot, because the Cavaliers are all business in all aspects of school, life, and especially college sports. They answered the call to play in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl. So let's make some music, already!

I didn't see this game at all. I slept during the day and only seen the highlights to know what's going on. Forf what I know, Minnesota was well on their way to doing the Big Ten proud, until Virginia rallied from behind to win it all.

FINAL SCORE:

Minnesota - 31
Virginia - 34

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY
Gaylord Hotels was likely enjoying this game. They got a five-star deal by watching Virginia come alive to win. The Cavaliers are possibly thinking about staying strong considering they knocked off Florida State for the first time in about 10 years. Can they be favorites for next year's ACC championship? You bet. Just edge out all the other talent to make it happen. Minnesota will lose Maroney to the 2006 NFL Draft. So I hope those cuddly Golden Gophers can remain strong, maybe pull some upsets in the Big Ten and in big non-conference games.

The 2005 Vitalis Sun Bowl; El Paso, TX

Northwestern {Wildcats; Big Ten}
- vs. -
California-Los Angeles {Bruins; Pacific-10}

"No Defense, No Problem"

This game will take place at a school who picked up a memorable National Championship in basketball. As UTEP got blown out against Toledo in their Bowl Game, Texas-El Paso opens its doors to two great teams lovlingly able and willing to play one last game before ending the year on a high note. Formerly Texas Western University sometime in the past, UTEP opens its doors to the Vitalis Sun Bowl. I don't know if the people of Cuidad Juarez, Mexico would know what level of excitment there is for this game to take place. The Northwestern Wildcats have done quite well in the Big Ten conference even playing a great game against Penn State (even in a losing effort). For UCLA, it's all about Drew Olson and his boys as the sky blue and gold are ready to turn up the heat in El Paso. The UCLA Bruins have done quite well. But if there was one game that challenges my stating they done well, it has to be that disappointing loss to Arizona. Good news for them is that the year's almost over, so a win here will eliminate that horrible loss.

At the half, UCLA led 29-22. Since then, this wasn't even close.

FINAL SCORE:
Northwestern - 3?
California-Los Angeles - 50

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
When a team does very well, I don't see why some sportscasters like to think otherwise about certain teams. The Bruins may have had that setback in Tuscon, but they've done very well. Maybe not BCS-worthy, but great enough to make something happen. They also played a great game, even as commentators said this game would be an offensive shootout. All this ended up as was an offensive BLOWout. The Wildcats from the greater Chicago area did the Windy City little justice as UCLA came back from being shut out to win. My only advice to UCLA- don't lose to Arizona again. CERTAINLY don't lose to them in a blowout or shutout. If you're going to be Top 25, you can't have a disappointing loss over a team you know you can beat.

The 2005 Independence Bowl; Shreyport, LA

South Carolina/Missouri
- vs. -
Missouri/South Carolina

"Riding Tall"
If you see a logo of an eagle perching its talons on a football, you must know that the Independence Bowl is on tap. Shrevport, LA is the home of this Bowl Game. Now that Louisiana is getting very much better after the horrible hurricanes, the weather was beautiful for this early winter afternoon. It may have not been extremely snowy like the 2000 Independence Bowl, but two teams are willing to warm up your coldest winters. On one end is South Carolina. The Gamecocks are led by Steve Spurrier, and if "the old ball coach" can coach Florida to a National Championship in 1996, he can certainly do damage with South Carolina. They'll need to have their game faces on when meeting Missouri. Otherwise, the Tigers will quickly run away with one. It's time to celebrate Independence Day... five months late!

South Carolina led by as much as 21-0 in the First Quarter! The Big XII was looking to shed tears on a bigtime loss. But the Tigers rallies all throughout the game. By game's end, Missouri felt a lot better knowing they had to rally to win. And they did. Add seven more points to Missouri's tally had a very dumb Tripping penalty not been called. Any way you look at it, it's a good win for Mizzou, but give Spurrier credit for leading his boys to a 7-5 finish and a Bowl Game. Not bad at all.

FINAL SCORE:
South Carolina - 31
Missouri - 38

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Missouri fought back from being embarrased to eventually win. This is much the same as (another Big XII team) struggled to Oklahoma State but came back to beat Oklahoma State for about two straight years. It's a good win for the Tigers, but the Gamecocks shouldn't be disappointed. They did all they could to have momentum back on their side, but it wasn't enough.

The 2005 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl; Atlanta, GA

Miami {Hurricanes; Atlantic Coast Conference}
- vs. -
Louisiana State {Tigers; Southeastern Conference)

"Whirlwind Victory"
Atlanta, Georgia in the house! Or should I say in the dome. That's right. The Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl will see #9 Miami meet #10 LSU. Normally, I consider Chick-Fil-A as a pretty good food chain. At some malls, I like getting some nuggets or burgers from them. I still like KFC and Popeye's, but Chick-Fil-A has some good fast food chicken. If I'm talking food, we have the main course that DEFINITELY isn't fast food. LSU carries the pride of not only Baton Rouge and Louisiana, but Mississippi and Alabama. They were two other states affected by the horrible hurricanes over this past summer. The Tigers were one of many colleges affected by hurricanes. While no football team of any caliber can contend with Mother Nature, there are some hurricanes the Tigers COULD win against. That would be Miami. The Miami Hurricanes are usually one of the best teams with some of the most hard-nosed football action. Blink your eyes, and you could be crying as a result of a (don't laugh) Hurricanes' blowout. Two teams are ready for action, so let's see who got it done in the ATL.

Both teams exchanged field goals at the end of 1. But at around the second, LSU's execution was beating down Miami's lack of execution to make it 20-3. Les Miles probably told his boys to keep up the good work and not blow this thing like South Carolina did. Unlike South Carolina, LSU held on. Tack on 20 more points and no offensive execution by Miami, and you get a big blowout with a disappointing finish.

FINAL SCORE:
Miami - 3
Louisiana State - 40

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? Miami and LSU was talked about as being the best matchup of the Bowl Season other than the BCS Bowl Games. And what happens when analysis ends and the game begins? Chaos. Calamity. Disappointment. For some people, you'd may as well say that the anticipation for this game to be a shootout was like how F1 fans felt about the 2005 United States Grand Prix. This wasn't even a game considering that Miami, one of the best teams in the nation, could lose this game and lose big. This isn't UCLA @ Arizona. Instead, this is a good team against another good team. The Hurricanes looked on the ropes for this game, but I don't see them submarining next season. As for Louisiana State (or more commonly, LSU), this is a great win. You go from the threat of hurricanes to smashing Hurricanes on the football field. For the Baton Rouge unit, nothing could be sweeter or more satisfying than this. And again, maybe I've underrated LSU a bit personally. If so, I'm sorry. You're tough to beat and probably will remain tough to beat heading into the 2006-2007 season. Good luck to both teams and congratulations for making it to the post season.

The 2005 Vitalis Sun Bowl; El Paso, TX

Northwestern {Wildcats; Big Ten}
- vs. -
California-Los Angeles {Bruins; Pacific-10}

At the half, UCLA led 29-22. Since then, this wasn't even close.

FINAL SCORE:
Northwestern - 3?
California-Los Angeles - 50

I don't follow college anything but I happen to catch highlights of this game and all I gotta say is Northwestern got OWNED! :lol: 2 onside kicks to returns for touchdowns. :sick: wow...

The 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl - Charlotte, NC

South Florida {Bulls; Big East}
- vs. -
North Carolina State {Wolfpack; Atlantic Coast Conference}

"Mr. Monkeywrench"
Charlotte, North Carolina is up now. For racing fans, this is NASCAR country, even considering Speed Channel is based in the greater Charlotte area. If you don't take care of your car, you're going to have a lot of troubles. For these two teams, someone's going to be in great care, while the other only wishes they were pampered and cared for. North Carolina State didn't have to travel very far to play in this Bowl on an NFL field. While some of NC State could be playing on Sundays, the Wolfpack were looking to send a message to the Big East. But let's not count out Tampa Bay, FL's South Florida. The USF Bulls made their first Bowl in a matter of 7 or 9 years in Division 1. That is impressive. Let's see if the game was impressive.

This game was two things- NC State execution, and South Florida's lack of execution. Two touchdowns, bench the field goal unit, easy money.

FINAL SCORE:
South Florida - 0
North Carolina State - 14

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
NC State needs this win. They've faced a lot of hardships, and it feels good to win a postseason game. The Bowl system may not be like college basketball's March Madness, but this is a win the 'Pack can take. The Bulls shouldn't feel bad over this loss. You advanced to a Bowl Game quicker than even Alabama-Birmingham. Plenty of reason to be glad and honored. A winning season gets you to the postseason. Great job, boys. Do better next year.

The 2005 Auto Zone Liberty Bowl - Memphis, TN

Fresno State {Bulldogs; Western Athletic Conference}
- vs. -
Tulsa {Golden Hurricane; Conference USA}

"In the Zone"
We're going to Graceland for the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl. Much like Auto Zone, these two teams are like cars with functional auto parts. Someone's heading to the scrap shop to the car... uh, team... who breaks down in this one. Which was the lemon- the Fresno State Bulldogs? Or the Tulsa Golden Hurricane?

Unlike the shutout in Charlotte, this was an actual game. The scores were tied at 24 until Tulsa cashed in a nice Touchdown. FrSU gets picked off, and that was the game after some good running to milk the clock.

FINAL SCORE:
Fresno State - 24
Tulsa - 31

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
I'll tell you this right now. This is either a big win or an upset based on your thinking. Fresno State is a great team, perhaps even an underdog to many. Tulsa's risen from the dead to being impressive debutantes to Conference USA. Tulsa wins the C-USA title AND snap up a nice win against Fresno State. I'd say they had one hell of a year. If you're a Golden Hurricane fan, I wish you much more success in the future. Maybe if they can knock off some BCS conference teams, the might send a loud and clear message to America. Fresno State is a great team. Maybe even the best West Coast team other than Southern California. They've done an amazing job and can't do bad from here on out. Great job to both teams. You see, if you only get caught up with schools in the Big Ten, Big XII, ACC, Pac-10 and all, you are really missing out on seeing other talents in lesser conferences. These are two of the best in their conferences. So the next time you think such conference participants can't hold a candle to the big schools, think again. REALLY think again.

The 2005 ev1.net Houston Bowl - Houston, TX

Texas Christian {Horned Frogs; Mountain West Conference}
- vs. -
Iowa State {Cyclones; Big XII}

"Houston, We Have Kickoff"
As much as I like an American tour of Bowl Games, it's nice to be back at home. Home is Houston, Texas for your's truly. It is America's fourth largest city, and the biggest city on America's "Third Coast." Summers can be very hot, winters can be chilly or freezing cold, rain can pour, the sun can beam, but this is the city I call home. Being born and raised going on 23 years here, I love this city and its people. We are diverse and active. We are still subject to being hated on and all. Like all the "fattest city in America" deal. I get so sick of commercials about diet pills and exercise machines because there's a better way to get into shape- watch college football. One of Texas' own will meet some boys who had some big wins, including upsetting their in-state rivals. Texas Christian University... what can I say? They DOMINATED the Mountain West, lost only to Southern Methodist. Now, the Horned Frogs are going from Fort Worth, TX to Houston to play in the ev1.net Houston Bowl (once called the galleryfurniture.com Bowl). Bad weather's coming to Houston, especially in the form of the Iowa State Cyclones. The boys from Ames, IA upset the Iowa Hawkeyes (they got Florida) in Ames, and among other things, managed to make it to Houston. So which school delivered in America's Space City?

It was liftoff for Texas Christian's offense as they led 7-0 after a few minutes off the clock. I actually didn't see all of the game, so I don't know too much about scoring. All I do know is that at game's end, TCU wins 11 games and losing only to Southern Methodist. THAT IS IMPRESSIVE (except for that loss to their cupcake rivals).

FINAL SCORE:
Texas Christian - 27
Iowa State - 24

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
TCU has some talent. You San Diego Charger fans may know of a young man named LaDanian Tomlinson. He's a Horned Frog alum and just lights up each game he plays. TCU did everything they had to do, and did it well. They go from Conference USA to the Mountain West and are likely favorites to win it all again next season. They beat Utah and Oklahoma among others. Oklahoma. AT Oklahoma. Week 1. To say TCU doesn't deserve this awesome season is obviously insane. Iowa State must keep up the good work and maybe work harder to be a sleeper for the Top 20 or Top 10.

The 2006 Gator Bowl - Gainesville, FL

Time to begin the first Bowl of 2006, GTPlanet. We make our way into Gainesville, FL. Personally, I wouldn't mind going to Florida if I had some time to travel. I think I normally hear of Gainesville in terms of drag racing. Well, we got two cars lined up, staged up, and ready for their 10-second thrill ride. One dragster is Iowa. Iowa and Florida have something in common because last year, the Hawkeyes upset LSU in the 2005 Captial One Bowl. Or as I jokingly called it, the "Capital Ownage Bowl." Well, Iowa won in Florida last year, now they meet an actual Florida team. This is essentially a home game for Florida. Gators love the swamps, so they play in The Swamp. Careful! You may get chomped if you're not careful. Luckily, you're with me on this virtual Bowl tour. You're all safe, so let's see who won this wild game.

From what I've seen, Florida was beating down Iowa earlier in the game. However, the resurgent Hawkeyes tried to make a game out of it. As they tried to make a game out of it, they unfortunately came up short for one reason- a penalty on an Onside Kick. They tried it again, and lost. So, it was sort of a heartbreaker as Iowa tried to deadlock the game. Florida was too tough, unfortunately. Sorry, JNasty and other Iowa fans.

Iowa - 24
Florida - 31

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
What can I say? I actually enjoyed following Iowa. I've wanted to cover Iowa upon the influence of GTPlanet's own and one of my buddies, JNasty. Unfortunately, Iowa fell short. There may have been controversy as the referree called the Onside Kick offsides. Questionable call, but Florida won. Think about it like this. If Iowa won this game, this would have been two straight January Bowl wins against the SEC. And let me tell you. Beating Louisiana State and Florida isn't easy, much less beat them in two straight January bowl games. Iowa and Florida will probably be the big sleepers in their respective conferences next season, so keep your eyes on both teams. Only question mark would be if Northwestern may knock off Iowa as sleepers in the next season of Big Ten football.

The 2006 Toyota Gator Bowl - Jacksonville, FL

Louisville {Cardinals; Big East}
- vs. -
Virginia Tech {Hokies; Atlantic Coast Conference}

"Ex Bowl"
This is a battle of two teams who were previously parts of two different conferences. Louisville joined the Big East from Conference USA, and Virginia Tech joined the ACC from the Big East. Which team would deliver on game day? Well, we find out in Jaguar country- Jacksonville, FL. The Jacksonville Jaguars may be a good team, but I think even they'd have to say we have a good matchup in college football at Alltell Stadium. The Louisville Cardinals fans in Jacksonville would love to see their boys go at it against Virginia Tech. Many would say Virginia Tech is overrated, but the Hokies can still play solid football. Virginia Tech was once unbeaten, but they need some games to have something to look forward to next year, and beating Louisville would give the ACC some promise and the Big East more problems.

I was asleep almost all day, so this game I didn't see. All I know is that Louisville took it against Virginia Tech. Louisville was ready to charge up and take on VT like (not to use advertisement) a Toyota Tundra. Unfortunately, VT was just a bit too much for the Cardinals. VT won on a hole shot with their twin-turbo offense. And in the end, Louisville broke off the line and VT coasted to a turbocharged victory.

Louisville - 24
Virginia Tech - 35

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Virginia Tech is a good team. Louisville is a good team. Virginia Tech was a Big East team, and Louisville is now a Big East team. VT got it done, not to take away from Louisville. I don't see these teams blowing next year. I think both teams will rack up seven or more wins next season. I don't know the seniority of Marcus Vick, but if Ma. Vick enters the draft (imagine Michael vs. Marcus!), VT will need a QB to make something happen like Marcus Vick did.

The 2006 Capital One Bowl - Orlando, FL[/B]

Barry Alvarez has to be proud of his boys in his final season as head coach. Hey Iowa and LSU, remember last year's game? Iowa upset LSU and had high hopes for next year. Iowa may have lost their Bowl elsewhere, but could another upset happen? Wisconsin's Badgers hope to make something happen against a very vicious pack of SEC footballers. Those vicious footballers are the Auburn Tigers.

Wisconsin won this game by two touchdowns. So one big SEC team lost, will another fall as well? Alabama's next, then Georgia.

FINAL SCORE:
Wisconsin - 24
Auburn - 10

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
In the regular season, I said that Wisconsin had a disappointing loss as Iowa beat them in Barry Alvarez's final home game as head coach. Well, this game certainly made up for that loss to Iowa. Normally, I consider a defeat of a higher-ranked team as an upset. Well, Wisconsin did just that to the Auburn Tigers. Last season, Auburn feels they've been shafted by not playing for the National Championship. Now, the perfect drive from that season ends in sadness for the Tigers. As for Wisconsin, God bless you, Barry Alvarez in your future endeavors and other things to help Wisconsin's Badgers.

The 2005 AT&T Cotton Bowl - Dallas, TX

Texas Tech {Red Raiders; Big XII}
- vs. -
Alabama {Crimson Tide; Southeastern Conference}

"Let's Get Red-y to Rumble!"
I'm a Houston boy, but let's stay in my home state and go into Dallas. I have been to San Antonio twice, but never Dallas. Well, I'll virtually be in Dallas, just to talk about this game. It is a battle of one of Texas' own and Alabama. The Texas Tech Red Raiders didn't have to travel too far from their home pad in Lubbock, TX. While their men's basketball team struggles, their football team got it done pretty well. The Red Raiders remained strong and brave, and they'll need to have both qualities matching up against Alabama. As much as Texas Tech was unbeaten, Alabama was even more on a roll. The Crimson Tide are a great bunch with one of my favorite fight songs, "Hey, Alabama!" Unless you're from Auburn, Alabama is perhaps Alabama's greatest teams. Red and crimson ready to take each other on. You ready? Let's get it!

The game was a defensive stranglehold, but both teams managed to get 10 points. It wasn't until Alabama literally threaded the needle on a field goal kick to win it all for the Tuscaloosa bunch.

FINAL SCORE:
Texas Tech - 10
Alabama - 13

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Alabama won the game, but Mike Shula lost in the press conference afterwards. It was a sad, but also amusing as Mike Shula fell out of his chair in the press conference. He stood right up and said to the press "Don't show this on ESPN!" Well, ESPNEWS did it several times. It was so funny! My parents and I were laughing. It was funny. There was still nothing to laugh at with Texas Tech. They were complete hardasses in the Big XII even though it was all about Texas in the Big XII. Both teams should be solid for next year. If not 10-win seasons, then at least make a Bowl Game. I think BOTH teams will make it to somebody's Bowl Game next season.

*+x The 2006 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl - Glendale, AZ x+*

Ohio State {Buckeyes; Big Ten}
- vs. -
Notre Dame {Fighting Irish; -independent-}

""
ATTENTION COLLEGE FOOTBALL FANS! Next season's National Championship is in the Fiesta Bowl! The 2007 Fiesta Bowl will play host to the best two teams in the nation next season. Stay tuned to next year! The first of the BCS Bowl Games is underway, GTPlanet. Since there is no playoff in college football, this is the stage where many college football programs want to reach. You have to be a GREAT team or a "BCS Buster" to make it onto the four big stages. The first big stage is the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Perhaps you have some Tostitos chips and maybe some Tostitos dip. I think I have some Tositos Salsa, but it's time to get some snacks and enjoy this game. As close as their home bases are, as much history between the two, this is only the fourth or fifth meeting all-time. Ohio State and Notre Dame are ready to clash like never before. Notre Dame is #5, and the Fighting Irish hope to do one better over their Columbus opponents. Unless you're Michigan, Indiana, or whoever, you have to love Buckeyes' football.

Notre Dame was explosive, but nowhere on par with Ohio State. OhSU was embarrasing the Irish, all the way to this sweet win. Hope you enjoyed your Tostitos chips and dips and salsa and all that. Also, look to next year for this Bowl Game because the Fiesta Bowl will be next season's National Championship game.

FINAL SCORE:
Ohio State - 34
Notre Dame - 20

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
With this loss, Notre Dame ties West Virginia and South Carolina for most consecutive Bowl losses with eight straight Bowl Game losses. Notre Dame may have been a great story this season, but they lose to their close Big Ten counterparts. As for Ohio State... well, what do you expect? This is Ohio State, a pure and complete football team almost every year. This is a good win for Ohio State. This will just anger Michigan a bit more so that if Ohio State gets on a Notre Dame-like roll, that the Wolverines will want to kick their butts so bad, it hurts. Ohio State's probably gunning for another BCS Bowl or some January Bowl at least. I don't know if Notre Dame will do one better next season, but it is a great win for the Buckeyes

*+x The 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl - (Moved to Atlanta, GA) x+*

West Virginia {Mountaineers; Big East}
- vs. -
Georgia {Bulldogs; Southeastern Conference}

"Screw With the Dawg, You Get Bit!"
Ready for Bowl action in Georgia? Well, not Athens, but Atlanta? Good. The city of Atlanta is pretty popular among hip-hop types. You got household names like Ludaccris, Ying-Yang Twins, Young Jeezy, Lil' Jon, and of course, OutKast among others. We got two teams who know hip-hop quite well. They are hip on the field, and can hop pretty well to avoid low tackles. Some will even fly like Superman trying to get into the end zone. The Georgia Bulldogs head into the city of their in-state rivals, Atlanta, with a purpose. As hurricanes ravaged Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, the Sugar Bowl was moved to Atlanta as the Louisiana Superdome wasn't in great shape for playing. Georgia's opponents have been ravaged in another fashion. The West Virginia Mountaineers are in a football conference in which they've been criticized as not being very interesting or having really good teams. A win here would make WVU huge exceptions to the statement. Let's see if they got that win to silence the critics.

In the beginning, West Virginia got the first TD. They'd also pick up 3 more until Georgia (finally) answers. At the start of the Fourth Quarter, Georgia only trailed 31-28. Afterwards, a big Facemask call on Georgia gave WVU a chance to further embarass and even upset Georgia. It isn't official, but a disappointing loss is in the works. In the end, Georgia gets silenced as West Virginia escapes the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta with a hellacious upset win.

FINAL SCORE:
West Virginia - 38
Georgia - 35

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Wow. If Georgia lost this game in a blowout like Miami lost to LSU in THE SAME STADIUM, I'd be ready to rag on the Bulldogs like hell. Georgia connected some lovely plays. I think the defense was suspect several times against West Virginia's offense. The Big East defeats an SEC juggernaut. To me, that's a BIG win for the Big East. The Big East isn't a basketball conference anymore, as West Virginia got it done against Georgia. Don't fault the heart of a bulldog, though. As the saying goes, it's not about the dog in the fight, but how much fight is in the dog (or something like that). And they had PLENTY of fight. Sadly, it wasn't enough. Not to add insult to injury, but I don't think Georgia ever led the game. Well, a lot to improve for next season. Make it to ANY bowl between New Orleans or the Fiesta for next year. Keep up the good work to both teams.

*+x The 2006 FedEx Orange Bowl; Miami, FL x+*

Penn State {Nittany Lions; Big Ten}
- vs. -
Florida State {Seminoles; Atlantic Coast Conference}

"One More Time!"
One team lost a game in a heartbreaker, while another lost three straight but came back big. We're talking about Penn State and Florida State getting it on in Miami. I've never been outside the state of Texas, but Miami is pretty nice, isn't it? Some go for the lifestyle, some go for the beaches, some go to see some good sporting events. Whether you want to see the Miami Dolphins go at it, the Miami Heat tear up the boards, watch the Miami Hurricanes show America how to play college sports, or even watch some good auto racing at Homstead's oval and infield road course, Miami has it all. What it also has is a gam that should be a classic, especially considering the two coaches who will commence battle. The Penn State Nittany Lions have had an explosive year. Perhaps if there was a playoff in Division 1-A college football, if PSU was to win this game, they'd be a bigtime threat to the USC/Texas match, assuming that would be the matchup for the ages. Florida State underachived in three straight games before knocking off Virginia Tech for the ACC Championship. The Seminoles are #22 in the nation heading into this game. Boy... if #22 FSU knocked off #3 Penn State, it would be a hell of an upset and would make up for FSU's three bad losses. It's two East Coast schools ready to hit it off.

At the end of One, Penn State got a very nice touchdown run. Extra point? Sure. It was 7-0 as the Blue and Vanilla White led the 'Noles. At the end of the First Half, Penn State led 14-13 after FSU missed a Point After attempt. Into the Second Half, the two teams were tied at 16. And when there's a tie- we got Overtime. Overtime is played until one outdoes the other unlike NFL Overtime. Both teams shanked field goals, so we go to Double Overtime. Penn State hits paydirt on a beautiful Quarterback Option, pitching to #33. FSU needs a TD and the PAT to take it to Triple OT. If they get to three, if you connect a TD, you MUST go for two points. It probably won't be like a thrilling 7OT game a few years ago between two other schools. Or I could be wrong. Count the TD, count the PAT, now we're in the Third Overtime. You have to go for two after a touchdown in 3OT or more. We are at 23-23 into 3OT.

FINAL SCORE; Overtime:
#3 Penn State - 26
#22 Florida State - 23

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
Are you kidding me? THIS... IS... FOOTBALL! I think this game was so good that people weren't expecting this game to be a classic like what the Rose Bowl could end up. You know, Florida State is fine... they just either need a new Special Teams coach or have better regimens for kicking. Joe Paterno... I think the guy is amazing. Possibly the biggest and best name in college football history. Penn State came in #3 and played solid, hard football. Playing solid and hard gets you into the postseason. But if you ask me, Penn State could be wanting to play in next season's Fiesta Bowl for the National Championship. This was a great game. Sleep is for the weak when there's a good game on. What a thriller this game was. Congratulations to both teams for this extra-special game.

The 2006 Gator Bowl - Gainesville, FL
.....they unfortunately came up short for one reason- a penalty on an Onside Kick. They tried it again, and lost. Sorry, JNasty and other Iowa fans.

Iowa - 24
Florida - 31
It was just a bad game for us, mixed with quite a few VERY questionable calls. There was some sketchy play from us in the first 3 quarters. But, even then, it wasn't as bad as it seemed by looking at the score. We had a punt blocked and recovered in the endzone for a TD, and a tipped pass caught and returned for a TD. So, take those 2 weird, quirky plays away, and we're up 7-3 at half.

But, instead of that, we're down 17-7. But, with about a minute left in the first half, FLA was punting to us. So, should be getting the ball back, and maybe get some points to close it up a bit at half. We almost block the punt, and their kicker FALLS ON OUR GUY, and then WE GET FLAGGED for it!!!!! So, tack on 15yds, and keep the ball. Total BS.

Then, after they keep the ball on the penalty, they run a couple plays. On the 3rd play after the first questionable call, we have another. We tackle a guy on a run. Just your normal, every-day football tackle. But, we get flagged for helmet-to-helmet contact. Another 15yds, and another drive prolonging 1st down.

So, we should have gotten the ball back with very good field position with about 1 min left in the half, and possibly gotten some points and closed the gap nicely going to halftime. But, 2 terrible calls later, and they score on a throw to the corner. So, half ends with us down 24-7.

They score once more in the 3rd to make it 31-7 going to the 4th quarter. We then start to get some momentum, and make some plays. We score 2 unanswered TDs and a FG, and get it back to a 7-point game.

Now, for a quick flashback. Way back in Week 10 (I think 10??), we were up a couple TDs on Northwestern with only about 3:30 in the 4th. They score, and then pull off an absolute textbook on-side kick to get the ball back. A few plays later, they score, and we go to OT. In OT, we get worked, and lose. Now, back to the bowl game.....

So, we've been down a bunch, and have now got it back to a 1 TD game. We go for the onside. And, I'd venture to say it was as good, if not better than the masterful one N-Western pulled on us. Two hops, a big pop in the air, and 2 Hawks grab the ball. Perfection......at least it was to every able-sighted human watching the game EXCEPT the line judge who flagged it. Terrible call, AGAIN. And, even though it was plain to see by EVERYONE it was a bad call, its an un-reviewable call, so it goes without question.

We then try it again, and don't get the ball. They take a knee a couple times, and game over. Bad, game-changing calls aside, we didn't really play as well as we should. It was a better game than the score or recaps will show. But, all in all, we just didn't get it done. Another year, another bunch of "What-Ifs" for Hawkeye football. I hate it, but I still love em, and can't wait for more next year.

*+x The 2006 Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA x+*

Texas {Longhorns; Big XII}
- vs. -
Southern California {Trojans; Pacific 10}

"The Big Game"
GTPlanet, the media coverage on this game was amazing! We have the big game, and the final Bowl Game of the 2005-2006 season. You got your virtual ticket with me to Pasadena, CA. UCLA may play at the Rose Bowl for regular season games, but this is where Rose Bowls have been played since 1902. The NFL is talking about moving a team to Los Angeles. If you ask me, the Rose Bowl is as much of a college tradition as Joe Paterno is to Penn State. To me, I like where USC plays and where UCLA plays. LEAVE THE ROSE BOWL ALONE. Collegiate tradition, much like Coach K Arena and all that. Now, on to the game. There are two USCs in Division 1-A football. We aren't talking about South Carolina. We're talking about the University of Southern California. This is essentially a home game for the Trojans. It's a game played on the turf of their bitter rival, UCLA. They welcome in boys from America's second-largest state, Texas. The Burnt Orange and White made their way into Pasadena (that's Pasadena, CA... to all of my southeast Texas people) looking to smash the Longhorn boys. Can the Longhorns get it done? The wonderful voices of Keith Jackson and Dan Fouts had the call.

This is basically the Super Bowl... of college. It's #1 and #2 going at it in So Cal. Stars are in the stands, on the field, on the ADT crystal ball trophy, and in the partly cloudy skies. A three-and-out and a fumble got USC past mid-field. Texas' defense pays for their crimes as USC drew first blood with almost three minutes off the clock. Speaking of the clock, it had to be fixed. So, it was about maybe 9:25 in the 1st as the clock incident occured. Both teams failed to convert 4th and 1. Vince Young threw five early, connected all five, even almost getting sacked. The First Quarter ended 7-0 with USC on top. Then in the second, a failed Option pitch by Reggie Bush gave the ball back to the Lone Star boys. Young felt even younger just connecting passes like he was Ben Roethlisberger. There was a small fumble which led to a 3rd and 24 for Texas. They didn't get it, but a 46-yard kick connected big time. No doubt about it. Texas picked up a HUGE interception in the End Zone. Texas scored a controversial touchdown late in the 2nd Quarter. Vince Young's knee was down as he pitched the ball off. Unlike Michigan/Nebraska's Sun Belt sanctions, this game was sanctioned by the Big Ten. And Texas got away with one but fail to connect the PAT. It's 9-7 as the Horns take the lead. It's 2:34 in the Second Quarter as Texas bangs in a long TD run. So they now lead 16-7 after the PAT. The Trojans banged in a 4o-something field goal from the right hash mark to make it 16-10. And that's how it ended after the First Half. You know what's funny about UsoCal? Both teams played against Michigan in the Rose Bowl. USC won in 2004, and Texas won in 2005. LenDale White got it to the End Zone for USC and the Extra Point is good. It's now 17-16 in this bigtime clash with 10:36 in the 3rd Quarter. Vince Young and his offense were full of fire as they drove it down the field. Their sort of two-minute offense led them down the field and saying "you can score on us, but we won't back down. We beat Michigan. We beat Ohio State. You're not keeping us down, USC!" And so far, they didn't as Texas adds seven more points (TD run and PAT) to make it 23-17. 4th and 1 for the Trojans around the 21, and they get the 6 points and the PAT. Now USoCal is on top 24-23. Texas was going to line up for a field goal, but they ran out of time getting the Field Goal unit lined up. So it's 24-23 after three. How about this? USC led the 1st, Texas led at the half, and now USC leads 24-23. If this is pattern continues, Texas may win. The 4th Quarter started with a missed Texas field goal, so Southern California holds onto their lead until Texas gets the ball back. Texas will get the ball back... after Reggie Bush puts the ball into the End Zone and PAT, thank you very much. Trojans lead 31-23 with 11:19 in the game left as THEY pull away. Texas answers with three as it's 31-26 with 8:46 left in the game. A foolish Roughing the Passer penalty on Texas gave USC great field position and a passing TD to make it 37. The extra point connects, so it's 38-26. Texas now needs a two-point conversion after the TD to tie. They don't convert a 4th and 2 around the Texas 46. It's 2:09 left as Texas has 129 seconds to make something happen, trailing 38-33. Last year, they barely knocked off Michigan with a money kick in the 2005 Rose Bowl. Is there still magic left? USC gets called with a 5yd Facemask, Texas in the game. They need five to win, so that mostly means TD at this point. A pointless review give Texas a chance to think about how to make the play happen. Thinking about it and doing it are two different things. It's 4th and 5 as Texas is on the 9. Game on the line... and Vince Young stuns Southern California with a wild touchdown QB keeper. Young makes a draw play, and Texas converts the two-pointer as they led 41-38 in this thriller. And as Texas kept pounding away, a state celebrates as Texas holds on to finally down USC. This is a crushing loss as Texas pulls it out to stun California. People underrated Texas, hated on Texas, said they couldn't win the big one... well, they did it! And BIGTIME! Thirs first title since 1970. That makes it four National Championship

FINAL SCORE:
Texas - 41 (National Champion)
Southern California - 38

MY POST-GAME COMMENTARY:
GTPlanet, let me tell you something. I felt so emotional and scared when Texas faced 4th and 5 with the game on the line. He absolutely scared the hell out of me because they had the first down, but add on the TC and key two-point conversion, and Texas really held on to a prayer for 29 seconds. You know, I knew this game would be the Super Bowl of college. Much like people hated on Ben Roethlisberger when he was an NFL rookie, Texas was about "can't win the big one" in the eyes of skeptics. But if you ask me, Texas deserved a win like this. Come on now. They beat Ohio State AT Ohio State, beat down Oklahoma, pimp slap Colorado, and win the game at the wire against Southern California. As I said, Texas CANNOT be the next Oklahoma in terms of a Big XII team beating down the opposition, all to falter in the Championship Game. Texas delivered on several accounts and weren't satisfied until they got it done. As for Southern California... well, I've loved them too. I would hate to see them lose about as much as I'd hate to see Texas lose. An analogy for this is that for me to hate to see either team lose is like saying that if you could choose between two things you love, and you could only choose one. Young and Leinart played their butts off, but Texas refused to stay down. Not just Vince Young, not just their backs and receivers, but the whole Texas team... refused to stay down. And being a Houston native, Vince Young is going to get a VERY warm reception by his hometown crew. Austin loves him. Probably Dallas, San Antonio, Lubbock, Waco, Abeline, El Paso, Brownsville, Jasper, Beaumont... Texas is alive and loves their team for knocking off the Los Angeles dynasty. Great game. I'd love to see highlights all over again to see this classic again.

Awesome end to the season eh? THat last drive was great! Young handled it to perfection. USC could've ended the drive but instead they got called for a 5 yd. facemask to give Texas the 1st down. Wow. BTW, i liked how both defenses played. They all brought the pressure, but Vince came out on top.👍

It would have been 4th down, not the end of the drive.

It's time I do my normal way to close out the session. There are a lot of Bowl Games, but I've made a few selections for my normal ending commentary. And after this post, I'll work on my season in review in a future thread. For now, take a look at these.

BIGGEST WINS OF THE BOWL SEASON
(1) Texas Christian Finishes Whirlwind Season Beating Iowa State There is a special reason why I am including this game. The reason is because TCU won the game with a nice kick to make it a 27-24 win. Then, the star kicker for TCU was recently murdered. So, my thoughts and prayers to the kicker for TCU. Don't give me that "kickers aren't crap" bulls:censored:. It's just as special of a teammate as the QB, a WR, a FS or anything like that. He helped win the game, and he needs to be given as much credit as the rest of the team. (2) Joe Paterno's Dream Season Ends in 3OT Victory Over Florida State What can I say? The man is amazing, as is his team. Penn State played with fire all year long even in the heartbreaking loss to Michigan. Their last Bowl Game prior to this was the 2002 Capital One Bowl, losing 13-9 to Auburn, then finishing 9-4. Penn State wins... hello! Eleven games. With many other teams in the Big Ten falling, the Big Ten was all about Penn State. BIG, BIG season and a nice win in Miami. (3) Conference USA Gets Six Teams to Postseason I try to not be about big conferences all the time, so I'll hand some respect to Conference USA. Conference USA's commercial has this quote: "We're the new Conference USA. Get to know us." And, oh brother... did we get to know them alright! UCF, Tulsa, Southern Mississippi, UTEP, Memphis, and Houston all made the postseason. Locally, Houston made their second Bowl Game in three years under Art Briles. Trouble is, they now lost 6 straight bowl games, and are maybe 2 games behind Notre Dame in terms of

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS(ES) OF THE BOWL SEASON
(2) Michigan's Horrible Season Ends in a Loss to Nebraska (Alamo Bowl) In some ways, what happened to Big Blue? I know the game was horribly officiated, but it's sad to not see Michigan play in a January Bowl, then lose to Nebraska. That final play was a nice touch by the Wolverines. But personally, I think Michigan could have had a better season. The good news is that they still went to a Bowl Game. But to give you an idea as how how this season went compared to since 1998, take a look at their finihsing W-L records since 1998 compared to the 2005 season: 9-3, 9-2, 8-3, 8-3, 10-3, 10-3, and 9-3. Good news for the Ann Arbor faithful- they will be back. Trust me. (3) #6 Oregon Didn't Play Like a #6 Team Against Oklahoma (Holiday Bowl) Last season, #5 Utah played Pittsburgh in a BCS Bowl and beat down their opponent. For #6 Oregon, I think there were some bad calls, but still didn't get it done. (4) All the People Who Doubted Texas (Rose Bowl) The Longhorns were projected as being beaten as bad as Oklahoma did against USC last season. I never disbelieved in Texas. I knew this was going to be the best of the best, yet Texas wasn't in the limelight and such as USC was. You know, people underrating Texas. Hell, I underrated Florida State heading into the Orange Bowl.

UPSET(S) OF THE BOWL SEASON (if any)
(1) #2 Texas Dethrones USoCal (Rose Bowl) The upset part of this is that Southern California won 34 straight heading into this game, and if anyone knocked them off, it would be a heartbreak, not to mention having to work another streak if the team is that good. Texas were treated like underdogs, so they went into SoCal and got her done. West Virginia Stuns Georgia (Sugar Bowl) "The Big East is a basketball conference, not football..." Well, WVU stunned quite a few people.

OWNAGE(S) OF THE BOWL SEASON
Miami Denied the End Zone All Night (Peach Bowl) Miami disappointingly lost to Louisiana State. To me, this tops Michigan's loss to Nebraska. Very sad performance. This was sad, and I hate to do this, but...

Miami = OWNED!

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Wow. What a Bowl season. All across the nation, on the islands of Hawaii, and in the four BCS Bowls. When people say that if you want to pursue your dreams, you can and just have to work for it... this is what you can do. Be a college football player, get the team to the postseason, and exhibit all of your best skills. You really have to be impressed with all the student athletes who laid it all out on the line to win. The determination to win one last game is just astonishing whether you're a national power or a little-known. The BCS was reviewed last last year, and the committee talked about "we choose not to have a playoff." Sure, many hated the idea, but this is still an oppurtunity to enjoy one last game of your favorite teams. You win through hard work, and we mustn't forget to congratulate all of the teams who made it in. It doesn't matter if all you care about are Division 1-A juggernauts, because everyone has an equal chance of being a great college story. Just have to fight for it and get some recognition. You do that, you're well on your way to being a superstar, maybe even a 1st Round pick in the NFL draft. After a few more exhibition/all-star games (I won't cover these), it will soon be time for National Signing Day on February 1st, when newcomers will go from high school to be perhaps the next best college stars, who may end up being the next best NFL talent. And always remember- the best years of your life are in college, so go defend your school's honor on the gridiron. You dig? Great season this was.
