College Football 2008 (Oct. 18 - Oct. 25) - Recess

Remember back in your grade school days when you had recess? You're were a kid and enjoyed recess about as much as a fun field trip. Recess was that fun time in which you got out the classroom and had some fun outside. Recess is where the teacher and his/her students have fun while relaxing. Not all teams get their recess because the classroom can also be the football field. Done from a lengthy week of work? Why not relax and see your favorite college or university kick some tail on the football field. Folks, recess is in session! Not for me, sadly, because I have scores to cover and comments to make.

I will experiment with a schedule each Sunday. I'm going to try to offer a general view of what action is forthcoming.

Those are just a few matches that I wanted to highlight. The Sunday Night match involves Seattle at Tampa Bay while the Monday Night game involves the Denver Broncos at the New England Patriots.

Did anyone see the LSU @ South Carolina game when South Carolina QB, Stephen Garcia, basically shoulder tackle Garcia? I would LOVE to see GTPlanet's South Carolina fans think of this hit. The SEC said that it was an unintentional hit and mostly a way to defend himself. And if it means anything... the referee was a former linebacker for the University of Kentucky. Michael Wilbon (PTI) thought this move was fraudulous. What about you?

A number of colleges and universities are mostly church and religion-based. The only thing about a lot of these is that I often wonder what classroom material as well as different ideologies and beliefs go into such institutions practice. The Jesuit style of education has intrigued me the most about knowing that God is in all things as practiced by Ignatius Loyola. A number of Loyola schools are in the nation. None of them, sadly, in college football. Some of these are mostly private institutions associated with a certain church (like when I profiled the University of Indianapolis). So allow me to take a look at religious institutions as well as football at these religious schools.



EXTRA: College Football and Religion
An article on fannation.com had one deal regarding the link between the church and of college athletics. There are a number of different colleges and universities in college sports. You see more of them outside of college football. These non-football schools include schools like (Division 2) the University of Philadelphia, the University of Detroit-Mercy College, all WCC schools in the WCC (including the football school, University of San Diego), Creighton, any Loyola, and schools like that. Football schools with religious-type backgrounds include Boston College (maybe the most famous Jesuit university), Notre Dame, Baylor, Gardner-Webb, (Division 3) Occidental College, and schools like that. A Sports Illustrated blog on fannation.com was written by Selena Roberts. You can read her blog entry in regards to college football at church-affiliated universities and colleges here: < http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/points_after/posts/2413 >. I'd like to post a little of her blog entry:

The industrialized version of college football is unseemly, soulless -- and wildly seductive. Some faith-based universities can't resist Division 1 glory, with its bounty of fool's gold for administrators desperate to turn a WE'RE NO. 1 foam finger into a marketing tool. "This brings to mind a fundamental question: Is American religion now more Biblical and traditional or is it more American?" says William J. Baker, author of Playing with God: Religion and Modern Sport." "And is it more geared to a market economy than it is to any sort of traditional religious set of values?

These are mostly schools founded by affiliated churches. The notion Selena Roberts made in the blog I posted had to do with college football at church-based schools (mostly Christian schools) being more about pusing towards being in big-name conferences and divisions while shying far away from the religious principles set in stone from such institutions. Interestingly enough, she chose to take on TCU and SMU in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (SMU in Dallas; TCU in Fort Worth). Personally, I think you can go as far as you want in college athletics as you like. But it doesn't mean that you have to shy away from any religious principles set in stone.

You want an example of popular church-based schools in America? Boston College and Notre Dame are the biggest of them all. Boston College is a Jesuit instituion while (I just learned) Notre Dame has Roman Catholic affiliation. I have no religious education of any kind. It isn't like church-affiliated universities and colleges put aside their religious principles in an effort to be the best college sports school in America. Did the University of San Francisco put aside their religious background to rest when they won their only two men's basketball championships with the amazing Bill Russell working the hardwood? Did Loyola University of Chicago try to overbear their basketball program when they won the National Championship in basketball in the '60s? You never back away from any religious affiliation no matter how far you go in sports. Get in the sporting arena and win while practicing good faith and having a solid religious-type education in the classroom and at church.

It isn't like these schools try to chase the money and pride in higher divisions of college sports and putting aside the religious affiliations of such schools. You're still representing your university and all the religious values founded for the school. I remember last season when I was looking up Providence College. A Flash video for Providence talked about being a Dominican school, but welcoming people of various religions. This is a Big East school in basketball and other sports. In fact, the Big East (in basketball) has a lot of religious affiliated schools. This gives them exposure, but they don't chase the money to expose their athletics while shying away from the religious principles associated to the specific schools. One is a fool to think such schools put aside these religious affiliations to try to add extra allure to the college sports programs.



You all are free to debate as well as offer your views on the potential controversy involving the SEC referee that supposedly shoulder tackled the South Carolina QB during South Carolina's game vs. LSU. Tomorrow's action will be Ohio meeting Temple. The bigger story in Philadelphia is the Phillies in the World Series ready to take on Tampa Bay for the World Series title. But the college story will be Philadelphia's only FBS school ready to host a floundering Ohio team.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Temple Seeks to Beat Ohio While Promoting Breast Cancer Awareness
* Ohio {Bobcats} at Temple {Owls}
Philadelphia couldn't be any happier as their Philadelphia Phillies hope to take down the upstart Rays to win their second-ever World Series title. That's baseball. You came for football, especially college. So get ready for Ohio's visit to Temple. The Ohio Bobcats are usually a good team. Unfortunately, they haven't had much to cheer about. Maybe a win in Philly will help. Temple is usually one of the sorriest teams in FBS. The Owls seem to have something going for a change. They aren't going to anybody's bowl game
First touchdown at home this season (tells you how pathetic Temple football is) with 10:53 left in the game. They'd cash in another touchdown late in the game. Temple's character and determination were in full circle as they cashed in a great win. MORE reason for Philly to celebrate! (14-10; TEMPLE)

John's Random Previews

PREVIEW: Morgantown, West Virginia - Mountaineers Welcome Some Hungry Tigers
* Auburn {Tigers} at West Virginia {Mountaineers}
The only BCS school in the state of West Virginia plays host to this match. Auburn's kind of trying to rediscover their identity while West Virginia's looking for their identity some as well. This is the big ESPN match for Thursday night. I think West Virginia may have a slight edge here, but don't count out Auburn. The Mountaineers could probably win with a decent passing game while Auburn could probably run the ball right down West Virginia's throats.

PREVIEW: San José, California - Broncos of the Blue Field Meet Blue Spartans
* #13 Boise State {Broncos} at San Jose State {Spartans}
The Broncos would hate themselves if they lose to San Diego State. San Jose State has been known to be a tricky team, sometimes ending BCS hopes for teams. Boise State doesn't have Jared Zabransky, but Ian Johnson's still (literally) carrying the load for the Broncos. If it comes down to a close game (which could be likely), Boise State will need to keep scoring on offense while making sure the Spartans have no chance of taming Boise State.


Now for Saturday Previews. I'll just breeze through these without fancy intros.


* #8 Texas Tech at #19 Kansas
This could be an offensive shootout. Texas Tech and Kansas will probably play this game like basketball on grass (considering both have two great men's basketball programs (not to mention Kansas is the defending men's champs). I'm predicting this game to be decided by no more than 7 points. Texas Tech survived in Overtime against Nebraska. Maybe they try to hang on in Overtime as well if this game gets that far. But really, I think Kansas COULD upset Texas Tech in this game. This is sure to get High-Test to smile.

* Illinois at Wisconsin
Can you believe that Wisconsin is 0-4 this season in Big Ten play? I think Wisconsin COULD win this game against a much-improved Fighting Illini unit. Wisconsin has to bring that fire (like in their red colors) if they want to beat up the Fighting Illini. I think Wisconsin will get their first "W" in conference play this weekend hosting Illinois. Wisconsin has four losses in Big Ten play. And one of the teams they lost to is in my next preview.

* Michigan State at Michigan
The Paul Bunyan Trophy is on the line. Michigan's only two BCS schools will collide for superiority. New coach with a new system takes time to materialize. The spread offense (which is completely foreign to me) for a proven power like Michigan isn't working right now. And as of right now, Michigan could be on pace to be that BCS school that may end up with no more than two wins. As said in rivalry games, throw away the records. Michigan knows they can make a statement again by beating a great team. It used to be that Michigan State was a pathetic joke on the gridiron. But when you're in the situation Michigan is in, you need a quality win. A win against Michigan State won't save their season, but it will help them in knowing they can beat any team that is across the field from them. And so... this is the last time I'm picking Michigan to win. Every other time, I was wrong. If they lose after I picked them to win, I'll stop giving away victories to Michigan this season.

* #14 South Florida at Louisville
The Cardinals of Louisville will host South Florida. Something tells me that this isn't the same smashmouth Louisville team under Brian Brohm or Stefan LeFors or any other good Louisville quarterback. The Bulls are thinking BCS (or at least a January bowl). Louisville may still win, but South Florida's going to escape the 'Ville with a win.

* Kentucky at #5 Florida
GOOD NEWS: You snap a 2-game losing streak by with a nice come-from-behind win. BAD NEWS: You got to take on Florida with Tim Tebow under center. WORSE NEWS: AT Florida. Can Kentucky come through and pull a big win? Kentucky is not that powerful unit like when Kentucky's own Andre' Woodson was under center. Hartline could be facing hart-break if Florida gets away. Last year, Kentucky upset #1 LSU at Commonwealth Stadium, all to take a tough loss the next weekend hosting Florida. It's tough for me to pick Kentucky to beat Florida. So I believe Kentucky will have a rough go in The Swamp unless Tim Tebow has an absolutely bad day.

* #2 Alabama at Tennessee
Two teams heading in two different directions. The Crimson Tide is 4-0 in conference and unbeaten overall (7-0, I believe). Meanwhile, Tennessee is just bumbling along and a real disappointment in the SEC. If there is any hope for Tennessee, they will have all of those Tennessee fans in the stands at the 103K+ seat capacity of Neyland Stadium. They need to cheer on their Volunteers and have some hope. Otherwise, Tennessee has no chance of stopping Alabama.

* Notre Dame at Washington
Notre Dame is 2-4 and Washington is (as I just learned) 0-6. Had it not been for that controversial call when the referees thought Jake Locker committed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after trying to lead a comeback, they'd be 1-5 (and BYU would REALLY be out of BCS title hope). This is the first meeting of these two teams since 9/24/2005 when Washington lost 36-17 to Notre Dame. Former Notre Dame coach, Ty Willingham, leads his Huskies to get their first win of the season. Washington just seems completely hopeless. Last thing UW wants is a loss to Tyrone Willingham's former team. Notre Dame may win this one by no more than 14 points.



* Jacksonville State at Tennessee-Martin
Two Ohio Valley Conference teams will go at it Thursday night. The Skyhawks will meet the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State. I'd probably go with the Skyhawks to send Jacksonville State back to Alabama with a loss.

* Pennsylvania at Yale
Yale University has been the class of the Ivy League as of late. They don't get any FCS playoff invites, so each Ivy League game is for pride. I think Yale will teach the Quakers quite a lesson at home. Both teams are still very good teams.

* Bryant at Massachusetts
The Minutemen of Massachusetts are a powerful team. Their upstart opponents are the FCS debutantes, Bryant. The Bryant Bulldogs from Rhode Island are a former Division 2 school taking on a capable UMass team. I think Massachusetts welcomes Bryant to FCS... the hard way.

* Texas Southern at Alcorn State
The Tigers of Texas Southern are Houston's only FCS school. They aren't the best SWAC school with an 0-3 record, but they'll host a team that isn't all that good to me. The Braves of Alcorn State will think beatdown here. I think Texas Southern will pull ahead and win this match.

* Alabama A&M at Alabama State --- RIVALRY: The Magic City Classic Presented by Pepsi ---
Vivica A. Fox will be the ambassador for this 67-year old rivalry game (according to http://www.themagiccityclassic.com ). She is the first female ambassador for this game. I usually regard Alabama A&M, but they haven't had a very good season. I think the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M may turn around their fortunes this Saturday against the Alabama State Hornets.

* Southern at Prairie View
The Southern Jaguars will go to Waller County, TX to meet the Prairie View A&M Panthers. This battle of two vicious cats will be an intense battle. Southern is 3-0 in the SWAC while PVAMU is 3-1. I think Southern will improve to 4-0 in conference and perhaps be the SWAC representative in the FCS playoffs.

* Southeastern Louisiana at Central Arkansas
UCA is 2-0 in the Southland Conference while the Southeastern Louisiana Lions are 1-1. The Lions of Hammond, LA will go north to take on the purple-clad Bearcats of Conway, AR's University of Central Arkansas. This is the Kent special. I am not sure who to take if I were to choose as I have no real idea about both of these teams. The Bearcats may get themselves a win against these breed of cat.

* North Dakota State at Illinois State
The Bison of NDSU will meet the Redbirds of Illinois State. Both teams have only one conference win each, but NDSU has 3 losses to Illinois State's 2 losses. Illinois State is good, but I don't see them beating the Bison.





Just because I previewed the games doesn't mean I'll get to all of them to see if I'm right. I just wanted to offer a preview as well as offer some diversity. I hope you get to enjoy this weekend's games. I won't be home to see them right away because I'm going to the Wings Over Houston Air Show on Saturday with my family. * Auburn {Tigers} at West Virginia {Mountaineers}
Blue and gold. It was the color of the skies and the setting sun here in Houston on a beautiful Fall (for once) day here in Houston. Blue and gold probably also described the skies when the sun set in Morgantown, West Virginia. They'll try to defend all things blue and gold when Auburn comes to town. The Tigers were terrible until they scrapped the spread offense. These Tigers now think they could beat anybody. Let's see if they can beat West Virgina's Mountaineers. Auburn led 17-10 at the half, but West Virginia added ten points to their tally to lead the Tigers. The winners of this match was the team that wore blue... and gold... as WVU doubled up on the Tigers. (34-17; WEST VIRGINIA)

Colorado Springs, Colorado - Air Force Takes to the Skies Against a Game New Mexico Lobos
* New Mexico {Lobos} at Air Force {Falcons}
I'll be heading to the Wings Over Houston Air Show on Saturday. So I'll probably see a lot of military aircraft including the FJ Harrier, the Super Hornet, and of course, the the awesome F-15 fighter jet. They may be fun to fly. But if you're thinking about defending our skies and making a commit to defend this great nation from above, the United States Air Force Academy is for you. My stepfather tells me that I should join the Air Force if I were ever to go into the service (I'm more civilian than military). The USAFA is the only service academy that isn't in the Eastern time zone. The Falcons are thinking to soar high and above New Mexico and their Lobos. They want to pass by them in a flash, like the Super Hornet. Let's see who takes this one. One of Air Force's old slogans was "Aim High." Well, They aimed high enough to be Bowl eligible. OFF-TOPIC - I proudly salute our men and women of the United States Armed Forces across all military fields. That means the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines, and the Coast Guard among various others. Few of my friends are in the service, so I surely salute them as well.

We return to the skies, but this time to check in with the Skyhawks of the University of Tennessee-Martin. They have a big match against Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks will try to slap around Tennessee-Martin in this Ohio Valley Conference match. Who got slapped around for real? The Gamecocks. Tennessee-Martin took care of business at home proper. Get ready for college football with this Friday report. The big match tonight is on the west coast. Then, we hit the east coast for the Division 3 matchup. The GAME OF THE WEEK will be in the Midwest. So let's head out to northern California for our first match.

NoCal in the house! San Jose is where the only Division 1 match will take place.

San José, California - Broncos Ready to Saddle Up in NoCal
* #12 Boise State {Broncos} at San Jose State {Spartans}
We are more than 40 miles south-southeast of San Francisco and more than 5 miles east-southeast of Santa Clara. The city of Santa Clara may be the new home of the San Francisco 49ers in 2012. Meanwhile, San José plays host to perhaps an upset. The Spartans of San José State wear blue and gold, but I don't really speak of their blue and gold much. Speaking of blue, how about those Boise State Broncos? They're 6-0 looking to go 7-0 after a trip here. A blue team will win, but which? Let's find out. The two sides were tied at 6 after one quarter, but Boise State led 20-9 after 30 minutes of game time. Boise State did everything they could to avert getting upset on the road with a late touchdown that sealed San Jose State's fate. (33-16: #12 Boise State)

My GAME OF THE WEEK is Penn State playing at Ohio State. Can Ohio State win the big one for a change? A lot of fans will think "Overrated" if Ohio State pulls this one off. Another big match involves Oklahoma State tangling with Texas (I think Texas is the home team). Whether or not I can do these scores for you all depends on if I can get them in for you in time. I recently changed up my computer to handle my weekly virus scan from 5:00 PM CDT Sunday to Noon Sunday. If I'm late with Saturday results, then you'll probably have to wait a little longer. I changed up a few other options, so maybe I can deliver scores without making you wait too long.

Enjoy Saturday's games. Remember to be a good sport and drive to and from the game safely. Get your goods going for tailgating if you're going tailgating. Or if you chooes to stay home, get ready for an exciting weekend of college football. My Saturday report will be complete whenever I complete it. I'll be heading to the Wings Over Houston Air Show Saturday, so I may bring my portable radio just to listen to any games on the radio. I DIDN'T go to the Air Show. However, I did see some of those lovely planes in the beautiful blue skies of Southeast Texas. College football on GTPlanet courtesy of me. A winning formula, no? The game of the week this week will be in the state of Ohio, where they have the most FBS schools of any state in the nation.

Columbus, Ohio - Penn State Tries to End Losing Streak of Playing Ohio State AT Ohio State
* #3 Pennsylvania State {Nittany Lions} at #9 Ohio State {Buckeyes} --- GAME OF THE WEEK ---
Tennessee has been a disappointment. Clemson has been a disappointment. Georgia has been somewhat a disappointment. However, no one seems to put Ohio State in the disappointment despite getting nailed at USCal and winning winnable games by close margins. And if Ohio State makes the BCS tournament, the Buckeyes still have that lingering "can't win the big one" mentality. This is a big one for sure- an unbeaten Penn State rolls into town. ESPN College Gameday saw Lee Corso put on the head of Brutus the Buckeye, meaning Corso picks Ohio State to win. The Nittany Lions are ready to roll into Columbus and put Ohio State out of their misery. Who delivered the knockout? Some time in the third quarter, I saw that Ohio State led 6-3. A low-scoring affair saw the Ohio State side groaning after a loss like this. (13-6; #3 Penn State)


Let's talk about two Big XII schools in the great state of Texas. These two schools meet next week and may truly be my GAME OF THE WEEK for next week:

Austin, Texas - Longhorns a Longshot to Remain Unbeaten?

In a heated fight (compared to the big leads OK State usually has over Texas, the Longhorns eeked out a victory despite a great effort by the Cowboys. (28-24; #1 TEXAS)

Lawrence, Kansas - Jayhawks Think They Can Stop Texas Tech
* #7 Texas Tech {Red Raiders} at #1? Kansas {Jayhawks}
Okay. Here's a true story. I went into the Radio Shack at Baybrook Mall in Friendswood (or Webster?), TX. I saw the game on the HDTV units. I picked this privately as my upset pick of the week. What happens next? [COLOR="Orange'][B]The Red Raiders blew Kansas' doors off. Talk about getting outclassed completely. Texas Tech grilled the Jayhawks and cooked 'em well done. It was a lovely day in Houston and the Houston area. Perhaps you've had a lovely day as well. For some teams, however, it just wasn't their day.





BIGGEST WIN(S) OF THE WEEK - Texas Wins a Fist Fight Against Oklahoma State, Knowing That Texas Tech is Waiting For Texas
The University of Texas shown they were for real when they took down (then) #1 Oklahoma. Now, the Longhorns had themselves a good old time against Oklahoma State. No rest for the weary- next week is Texas at Texas Tech. As much as I think Texas is my home state's best team, I'm not sure about their chances at Texas Tech. They don't have Vince Young. They do, however, have Colt McCoy who is looking great.



MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS(ES) OF THE WEEK - #3 Mary-Hardin Baylor goes to the Pacific Northwest... and Get Shown Up Terribly
You don't go to an NAIA school, and lose as terribly as Texas' own Mary Hardin-Baylor. NAIA teams are usually prety weak. But it's sad when you lose 40-28 to a team you know you (at least) could beat.



UPSET(S) OF THE WEEK (if any) - Wisconsin-Stevens Point Stuns #2 Wisconsin-Whitewater on the Road
This Division 3 battle saw Wisconsin-Stevens Point take down the Warhawks of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The state of Wisconsin sees the most Wisconsin schools of almost any division of NCAA football. Congratulations to Wisconsin-Stevens Point for this colossal upset of the defending National Champions in Division 3.



OWNAGE(S) OF THE WEEK - #15 Salisbury Whacks Becker 63-0
I could have given this to Florida thrashing Kentucky. However, the bailout came in the form of #15 Salisbury. And besides, Kentucky scored something unlike Becker. So...

Becker = OWNED 63-0 by #15 Salisbury!
