GTPlanet, ESPNU calls HBCU as "the best kept secret in college football." Names like Jerry Rice, Steve McNair, and even Walter Payton made their names in historically-black colleges and universities, or the more popular term- HBCUs. Being an African-American myself, it is actually quite interesting to see some of the best college stars become some of the biggest names in the NFL, should they enter the draft. You know, big name black stars can end up as Super Bowl MVPs, Pro Bowlers, Hall of Famers, you go from there. GTPlanet, if you want to talk about Black College Football in general, you can.
Here are some examples of HBCUs: Texas Southern, Southern, Prairie View A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Morgan State, Norfolk State, Hampton, Tuskgeege, Morehead State, North Carolina Central, Delaware State, Virginia Union, you go from there. These are mostly universities and colleges with Black American history involved. My high school alma mater is the Middle College of Technology Careers here in Houston. When I was a student, it was on the campus of Texas Southern University, just a street down of the University of Houston. TSU is purely an HBCU. I may not know of any black NFL legends or hall of famers from TSU (though TSU stinks in recent years), but I just want to provide a little insight to this topic.
Channels like ESPNU, College Sports TV (CSTV), and Black Entertainment Television (BET) looked to cash in on these events. Using TSU as an example, the Southern Jaguars recently beat the Texas Southern Tigers 44-20. And I think Hampton is in the Top 10 in Division 1-AA football... and about the only undefeated team in the Top 25 of Division 1-AA. GTPlanet, this is about HBCU football. Care to contribute?
