GTPlanet, this is your college football man, John. While the NFL can provide loads of excitement with stars from the past and present, college football has that sort of energy. You know, that sort of magic that makes college games more exciting if not really exciting. And this 2004-2005 season, I hope to talk more about the weekend's games. Of course, I'm not going to have every stat for every game, but if I can't give you an exact score, I'll at least let you know who beat who. There are many games and I do my best.

STORYLINE:
Last weekend, six of the Top 25 schools in Division 1-A football fell. Perhaps the biggest shocker was lowly North Carolina taking down the Miami Hurricanes. North Carolina- BIG rival to Duke, especially in college basketball, beat the University of Miami by a field goal. This weekend, the biggest rivalry is the Battle for "Paul Bunyan's Axe" between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Last year, Wisconsin was #16 in the nation when Minnesota beat Wisconsin by a field goal at the Metronome (where the Minnesota Vikings play).

So let's get started, eh? Included in each weekend's reports that I do, I will include basic results of the weekend's games for both Div. 1-A and 1-AA and lower (if any). Then, keep looking down for my picks of "upset of the week," "biggest win," "most disappointing loss," and my personal favorite, the "YOU GOT OWNED! of the week."

DIVISION 1-A (with scores, the home team in CAPS. Something new I've created, in case of rivalry games, you will see this symbol: "@" to represent a big rivalry game.)

@ "Axe for Help" Minnesota @ #4 Wisconsin Here's a fact. Did you know that Paul Bunyan's Axe is 6'5"? Whatever schools win this baby, that's a load to take home! The Wisconsin Badgets and Minnesota Golden Gophers go at it annually, and Wisconsin's going to have that axe taken back to Madison.
@ "Killer Beehive" Colorado State @ Utah
* "Ohio Offensive" Toledo vs. Miami-Ohio The Redhawks of Miami-Ohio hit off against Toledo this past Tuesday. Miami-Ohio led in convincing fashion en route to a win.
* "Running of the Bulls" USF @ UAB The rains came down this past Wednesday in Birmingham, AL, USA as the University of South Florida Bulls meet up against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers. The Blazers were looking to further complicate USF's chances at fighting back since USF lost BIGTIME to Louisville. Turns out, USF pulled it out in the second half, taking the blowout the other way around wit UAB losing.
* "Where's the Defense?" Louisville @ Memphis This game was rapid-fire, all-offense football. The game ended when Memphis was picked off by Louisville inside 30 seconds in the 4th Quarter. Louisville is STILL undefeated and face two Texas teams. Other than that, GREAT game it was. The Cardinals face two Texas teams next. Next week it's the TCU Horned Frogs, then they play the Houston Cougars the week after. By the way, Houston is 2-6 this year, and unless they pull it out against their remaining schedule, [56-49; Louisville]
* "12 Men On the Line" Oklahoma at Texas A&M Last year, Texas A&M seen tragedy. A 77-0 mega-blowout and mega-shutout. The Texas A&M Aggies look to reverse last year's horror on Kyle Field, the home of the "12th Man." This is a BIg XII matchup here. [42-35; Oklahoma] They played much better, but unfortunately, the 12th Man Advantage wasn't enough to take down A&M. So OU basically ran the table on the top Texas teams this season.
* "Beware the 'Horns of Texas" #19 Oklahoma State vs. #6 Texas Stillwater's soldiers meet up against the Austin juggernauts, the Texas Longhorns.
* "What Loss?" Clemson @ Miami (FL)
* "Joe Pa-Leeze!" Penn State vs. Northwestern Northwestern helped JoePa's Nittany Lions lose yet another game.
* "Next Door Neighbors" Mississippi State vs. Alabama This was a battle of next-door neighbors as Mississippi State took on Alabama. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide went at it
* "Willing-ham to do Anything to Win" Notre Dame @ Tennessee The blue and gold of South Bend, IN, USA faced off against the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium. It's a tough place to play in as Notre Dame looks to knock Tennessee outside of the higher-ranked teams. Mission accomplished, Notre Dame. [ ;Notre Dame]
* "Zipping Along" Marshall @ Akron Here's a MAC Conference matchup this past Friday as the Thundering Herd rounded up at the Zips. [31-28; AKRON]
* "Got Green?" North Texas @ Louisiana-Lafayette The game took place in Lafayette, LA, USA. The teams were the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns and the North Texas Mean Green in this Sun Belt battle. North Texas had the Ragin' Cajuns' number all night long. [27-17; North Texas]
* "Cat Fight" Kansas State @ Missouri After being down depressingly, the defending Big XII Champions (Kansas State) pulled it out against the Mizzou Tigers in convincing fashion. [35-24; Kansas State]
* "Another Upset?" Fresh off of the upset win over Miami (FL), North Carolina had a chance to take down another big team. They came within 3 points, however. Virginia Tech will stay in the Top 25 with their win over the Tar Heels.
* "Colorado Me Bad" Colorado @ Kansas Two beautiful places to play football. A good football team and a program ranked #1 in preseason college basketball. Colorado's Buffaloes shot the Jayhawks out of the sky.
* "Silly Rabbit, Rix Are For Kids!" Duke @ #13 Florida State Another game, more beautiful weather. The Duke Blue Devils are better known in basketball (starting up soon), and their football program stumbles and falls to the Seminoles who are still p*ssed off about losing to Maryland. [29-7 FLORIDA STATE]
* "One More Time" #5 Georgia @ Kentucky Georgia took this match more like a tune-up match when they face maybe their biggest rival, Auburn (next week!). And this baby wasn't even close.
* "Nerves of Steel" Pittsburgh @ Syracuse The Pittsburgh Panthers headed to the big dome where the Syracuse Orange play. When the game could have been decided by a field goal, the game went into not one, but TWO overtimes. And in the end, the Steel City giants took down their New York counterpart. [38-31; F/2OT; Pittsburgh]
* "Out of the Party" Cincinatti @ #21 Southern Miss The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss play host to the Cincinatti Bearcats in this Conference USA Matchup. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles couldn't stay #22 as they fall to the Bearcats.
* "The Tortoise and the Hare" Maryland @ #13 Virginia The Maryland Terrapins are fresh off of upsetting then #5 Florida State. However, they couldn't upset the Virginia Cavaliers this past Saturday afternoon. [16-0; VIRGINIA]
* "Pillaged Unproper" East Carolina @ Houston Houston may not get into a bowl game like they did last year, but this is a great way to fight back as they defeat the ECU Pirates (with the theme song I don't particularly like. ECU, that is). Houston wins at home.
* "New England Warfare" Rutgers @ #25 Boston College Playing hard all game long, the Boston College Eagles took down the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. [21-10; BOSTON COLLEGE]
* "¿Que Pasa, Miami?" Clemson at #10 Miami I thought the game would end 42-3 in favor of Miami, but apparentely not. Clemson fought back hard at the Orange Bowl against Miami. The former National Champions (I forget which year), put on a nice show in a rainy Miami, FL, USA. [23-17; OT; Clemson]
* "Come Hell, High Water, or Fog..." #1 USC @ Oregon State How do you complicate football? Play in deep fog. From certain camera angles, you can probably see 10 or 20 yards without looking for some big fog lights or anything. The fog did nothing to hurt USC's chances at heading to the Orange Bowl.

DIVISION 1-AA AND LOWER (select games)

Lehigh def. Georgetown

MY COMMENTARY

UPSET OF THE WEEK: Clemson over Miami FL.

BIGGEST WIN: Texas over Oklahoma State. It's a big win because this will help keep Texas in the Top 10. If they keep this up and the other big names stumble, this could line them up for a BCS Bowl Game bid.

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS: Miami FL losing to Clemson. Not to sound sarcastic, but Miami should have beaten two schools by now. North Carolina is better in basketball than in football, which is not to say that it can't play on the gridiron. And while Clemson is a great football program, I think Miami is "letting" teams win. I hope Miami can regain their swagger if they expect to play for a national title. Of course, can you imagine a football juggernaut playing in a Bowl Game except for Sugar, Fiesta, Rose, or Orange Bowls?

"YOU GOT OWNED!" WINNER: Florida shut up and shut down Kentucky (right teams?)

FINAL COMMENTS:
Well, before I end, I'd like to celebrate the 135th Anniversary of American college football. The first game was played on this November 6th, 1869. That's right folks, more than 135 years of college football. The first game was between Rutgers and Princeton in New Brunswick, NJ, USA. The next two weeks should be HUGE. PLENTY of rivalry games coming up, especially games like the Iron Bowl, the Egg Bowl, Ohio State/Michigan, Auburn/Georgia... rivalries are what college football are about, so I hope to give you the rundown next weekend! See you around!

I dont think Miami will be playing for a national championship with 2 loses. Alot of teams would hafta lose first.
