GTPlanet, it's time for more rivalry action.

STORYLINE

The regular season is coming to an end as Bowl Games are the hot topic. All games from the New Orleans Bowl to the Orange Bowl all are looking for bids. Whomever makes it into the Bowl games in the postseason will be proud to represent their conference and their universities as they play for bragging rights. Some teams are looking for more than just rinky-dink Bowl Games. More important are the Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and of course the Orange Bowl. Some of the championship-bound teams will have conference championship games next week. So let's see who's going to play around. Read on.

*+x GAME OF THE WEEK x+*
@ "Irish Spring" Notre Dame at USC This is the big game this weekend for one reason- Notre Dame has a chance to upset the New England Patriots of college football. The only thing stopping USC from hitting the road to Miami is Notre Dame.

@ "Texas Holds 'Em" Texas A&M at Texas Welcome to my home state. Two of the state's top teams went at it in the state Capital, Austin, the home of the University of Texas. For a while, the upset seemed subject to happen. But Texas had other plans as they beat them by a half. [26-13; TEXAS]

@ "If You Smell What the Rockets are Cooking..." If I'm not mistaken, this match is the Battle of I-75. And Toledo cleaned up bigtime. [TOLEDO]

@ "Lying, Cheating, and Steeling" West Virginia at Pittsburgh The good old Backyard Brawl ensued at one of my personal favorite venues to play college football- Heinz Field at the University of Pittsburgh. So talk about home field advantage. For a while, it seemed like West Virginia were going to stay on top and leave unranked Pittsburgh at bay. But a resergence on offense and defense gave this team the momentum to rally against the #23 Mountaineers. And the Steel City boys 'n gals upsetted a Top 25 team. [PITTSBURGH]

@ "Got the Boot" LSU at Arkansas The SEC is tough to play in, so when you have a good team battling another tough SEC team, you have one hell of a battle.

@ "Territorial Turmoil" Arizona State at Arizona When I seen the scores during the [34-24; ARIZONA]

@ "Commenwealthy" Virginia at Virgina Tech There was a chance that an upset could happen in Virginia's favor. That just didn't happen. The Virginia Cavaliers fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies. VT will be ready to go south for their rivalry game against the Miami Hurricanes. They MUST WIN to become ACC champions.

* "Into the Wolves Den" ^Boise State at Nevada Many games had cloudy or rainy weather. This one had snow. The Nevada Wolfpack hosted the Boise State Broncos. BSU are looking for its first-ever undefeated season since 1900. Good one, Boise State. [58-21 Boise State]

* "Bowled Over" Colorado at Nebraska Nebraska holds a record of 35 years of Bowl Game appearances. If they can just beat the Colorado Bufaloes, they'd continue the streak to 36 years. That didn't happen, unfortunately. Whether or not they would be the Big XII North Champions depend on if Iowa State could beat Missouri. Did they? Find out later in this post. [Colorado]

* "Heartbreak Bowl" Memphis at USF This Conference USA battle pits the Memphis Tigers and the South Florida Bulls. Until USF gets its own stadium (perhaps in 3 or 5 years), the Bulls invade Raymond James Stadium- the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Memphis cleaned up bigtime against South Florida. [31-15 Memphis]

@ "Nailed Hard" Cincinatti at Louisville Not enough Conference USA action? Here's more! The Louisville Cardinals are heading to the Liberty Bowl by taking down the Cincinatti Bearcats. And you can think of this as a nominee for "OWNAGE OF THE WEEK." This was not even close. [70-7 LOUISVILLE]

@ "Don't Hate the Player..." Georgia Tech at Georgia If I'm not mistaken, Georgia is the Peachtree state. Nothing peachy about this one, folks. Clean old-fashioned hate is the name of this classic rivalry. There would be a contributing factor for UGA's Bulldogs beating GT's Yellow Jackets- David Greene with a left thumb injury. He had to sit out the second half after getting his 40th career start. UGA could do without Georgia as they beat their rivals from Atlanta, GA, USA. [19-16 GEORGIA]

* "" Kentucky at Tennessee The kentucky Wildcats faced the Tennessee Volunteers in Tennessee. I was looking for maybe a 35-3 blowout, but Kentucky put up a great fight. Just not enough to upset Tennessee. [37-31 TENNESSEE]

* "" Big XII action took place in northern Texas as Texas Tech University hosted the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas Tech literally clobbered their opponents from the north. [31-15, TEXAS TECH]

* "The Other Hurricane" UTEP at Tulsa From one Oklahoma school to another, the UTEP (University of Texas-El Paso) Miners met the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. UTEP's heading to the Houston Bowl at Reliant Stadium (Houston, TX, USA; or of course my hometown). The only thing the Miners weren't expecting was losing to the Golden Hurricane. [37-35 TULSA]

* "Heroes in a Half Shell" Wake Forest at Maryland College Park, MD, USA is the venue for this matchup as Wake Forest met up against Maryland. The venue is not too far from Washington D.C., so would Maryland feel like they're in the front office? They were by beating Wake Forest in this defense battle. [13-7 MARYLAND]

@ "Egg-Xactly!" Mississippi State at Ole Miss The Iron Bowl was one of the big games this year, and this game is no different. It's time for the good old "Egg Bowl." This was not a contest at all from the alma mater of Eli Manning, who now plays for the New York Giants. [20-3 OLE MISS]

* "The Battle for Supremacy" Missouri at Iowa State Iowa State needs to win this game to become the Big XII North Champions. The Mizzou Tigers went from Columbus, MO, USA to Ames, Iowa, USA (?) to fight for the right to play Oklahoma next week in Kansas City. The game took overtime but a pick in the end zone by Mizzou meant the end of Iowa State's chances to play against Oklahoma. [OT; Missouri]

* "They Might Be Giants" Connecticut vs. ??? UConn has a lot of bragging rights right now. Name me any other school who wins the NCAA Basketball national titles in both the Mens and Womens divisions in the same year? Since getting into Division 1-A three years ago, UConn rose to the top and cleaned house to get its first ever Bowl Game bid.

DIV 1-AA

@ "Cajun Clash" Grambling State def. Southern The game was played at the New Orleans Superdome (?) in the good old-fashioned Bayou Classic between two wonderful Louisiana institutions. Southern was pretty much undefeated in the SWAC conference, but the chances of them winning this one were slim as Grambling State was just too tough. This cat fight ended with Grambling State's Tigers taking down the Southern Jaguars. Arkansas-Pine Bluff may have some newfound hope in trying to become SWAC champions. If the Golden Lions beat the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, they will advance to the SWAC Championship game. [24-13; Grambling State]

MY COMMENTARY

UPSET SET OF THE WEEK (Who defeated a much better team?)
Arizona defeating Arizona State at home

BIGGEST WIN OF THE WEEK (most significant win)
UConn's win this week is the biggest because it makes them Bowl Eligible. And they are proving to be more than a basketball force.

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS (should have won/negative impact to season/postseason)
I hate to say this, but Boston College gets the nod here, and here's why. BC had to win this game in order to vie for a BCS Bowl Game berth. Syracuse is better known in college basketball than college football. On top of that, they lose in a blowout. I was probably looking for a 35-7 win, but Syracuse shot the Eagles out the sky= and out of the BCS.

OWNAGE OF THE WEEK (biggest beatdown):
Louisville beats Cincinatti 70-7 for their rivalry trophy, the Keg of Nails.

NEXT WEEK:
More great rivalries are coming up. One of them is the annual Army/Navy game, while an ACC matchup is between Miami and Virginia Tech. Next week is also going to be a chance for conference titles to be decided. And two undefeateds will go at it. The Big XII title game at Arrowhead Pond (Kansas City, MO, USA) will see Big XII South's #2 Oklahoma take on the unranked Colorado Buffaloes. And the SEC Championship will be a rematch between Auburn Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers. Remember that Auburn pretty much blown out the Volunteers at Neyland Stadium. It takes guts to beat Tennessee at a place as tough as Neyland Stadium with over 109,000 people. The rematch will be in Falcon country- Atlanta, GA, USA. See you next week!

John you see the Raiders VS Bronco's last night? Raiders won. :( Big fan of Raiders but even bigger of Bronco's. Man they could have had the win but the kick was bloced. :(

Among one of the Raiders was Warren Sapp from the Miami Hurricanes. Miami has their rivalry game at home against the ever-tough Virginia Tech Hokies. If VT cleans up against Miami, then VT's going to win the ACC Championship from what I understand. Also, let me add that after the brawl between rivals Clemson and South Carolina, six players from both universities will be suspended for one game next season. Keep in mind that neither Clemson nor South Carolina will play in a Bowl Game, and I don't think any scholarship money will be given to these two programs. But you know, such rivalries are settled on the gridiron playing football, not having a street fight.

On the west coast, I still like USC as they have a sort of Heisman tandem in Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. But for that honor will be challenged by defending champion Jason White.

Still plenty of college action to come, so await my general report sometime this Saturday or early Sunday morning or whenever.

I cant wait till the San Dieago VS Green Bay Green Bay are kicking "arse" this year man. I think they have very high potential of going to the superbowl. What do you think?

Well, I normally like to discuss college football here, but I like both teams. Drew Brees and LaDanian Tomlinson are a good hookup as are Brett Favre and Donald Driver. If I had to choose, I'd say that Green Bay would win a close one. Maybe by a touchdown, maybe by a field goal.

I'd go with the bolts, even though I hate what they did to my beloved Raiders. But the NFL is not intresting me as much this year because the Raiders stink:(, so I super happy that Auburn is doing well this year.:D Its better than last year when the Raiders were 4-12 and the Tigers after so much hype finished like 8-5.

IF? There is no if about it. We WILL win against Miami. Although I don't think it will be an easy task to just go to the Orange Bowl and clean up against Miami, as they have one of the tougher stadiums to play in.

Is it just me or is it funny that all the college football 'experts' picked us (VT) to finish in the bottom 4 of the ACC? That is downright hilarious to me.

Oh, I said us and we because I'm just so used to doing that as I'm enrolled at VT.

How did Boston College lose to ****ing Syracuse? At least they'll be playing in the Tire Bowl (or whatever it's called).

I'm hoping for total anarchy in the BCS games. I'd really like to see USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn lose their last game and have Utah be the only undefeated team.

Boston College is going to be ****ed next year in the ACC. They've got to deal with Miami, Florida State, and Virginia Tech in football, and Duke, Clemson, Maryland, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Wake Forest in basketball.

You forgot about Boise State, but then again so do most people because they don't actually play anybody sitting over there in the WAC. Sure they score alot of points but if they played any team in the top 10 (possibly expanded to the top 18) they would definately be the underdogs and have a long shot at winning. They haven't even played a ranked opponent this year.

In all actuality, Auburn has the best shot at being upset this weekend when they play Tennessee. Oklaholma has a very small shot at being upset, based just upon what happened to them last year in the Big 12 Championship Game. USC will roll over UCLA, who will be lucky to score twice.

Actually, believe it or not, the best route to total anarchy in the BCS would be for USC, OU, and Auburn to all win. That would leave 5 undefeated teams instead of two, which is easier to fix because all the BCS committee would do is put Cal and Texas in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship. Granted there would be massive turmoil over the other BCS bowls, but the national championship game would be less controversial than the USC/OU/Auburn mix right now. Because from what I've seen of the 'three' I would say that OU should get left out because of their shaky performances against BGSU, TTU, OSU, and TAMU.

But who knows what will happen as this is one of, if not the most, unpredictable sport (minus racing) we are talking about here.

Before I begin, it is nice to finally get some commentary down from the GTP public. It's about the most replies I've ever gotten for my quick reports. Thanks, guys.

If you ask me, I also like Boise State. The WAC may not be the Big Ten or the Big XII, but whenever you can beat a bunch of opponents in your conference if even by a big margin, you DESERVE to play in the post season maybe for a title. I'll talk about this in an upcoming thread, but I think we'll probably never see Boise State challenge the big dogs in the Top 6. One of the surprise names this year is Utah. While Michigan/OSU and Auburn/Alabama went on, ESPN's College Gameday crew (I recommend you check this show out Saturday mornings during college football season. Great show) were in Salt Lake City to see Utah take on BYU. We normally say "The Big Dance" in college BASKETBALL, but even Lee Corso or someone said that Utah was going to college football's "Big Dance." Here's a question. Let's say Utah and Boise State went at it to determine who would be a "wild card" to play in the BCS title game. Who would win, the Utes or the Broncos?

As far as Miami and Virginia Tech go, I'll go on record saying that Virginia Tech is the toughest team to beat on the east coast. Miami will usually find a way to win, but when you pit the Hurricanes against the Hokies, you got one hell of a fight. And usually in college football, home field advantage can be the difference between winning and losing. A few big exceptions would be that Auburn/Tennessee game at Neyland Stadium. Whenever you can beat the Volunteers with over 109,000 screaming fans in a sea of orange, you're a damn good team.

Whew! That was a lot, but there's still plenty of stories. So what do you think about Tyrone Willingham being fired from Notre Dame? And it was shameful for Boston College to be blown out by... of all teams, Syracuse! A better basketball team, for God's sake!

Ty should still be coaching at ND. Almost all the teams he lost to this year are ranked and are getting ready to go bowling. Ty's record at ND is 21-15, although 11 of those wins came in his first year, he shouldn't have been fired. ND has one of the hardest schedules every year and to go 21-15 with that schedule shows that Ty is definately a good coach. Granted, ND fans aren't used to losing seasons, ND is still playing very well at the moment. They have a very young and inexperienced team right now and have no where to go but up. If anything, they should have kept Ty atleast until the end of his contract, as ND has NEVER fired a coach while under the original contract. Bad move on ND's part, I feel bad for Ty.

Yeah well not really alot of people like football here at GTP. I on the other hand like you love football. I was gonna join JV this year than Varsity next year in High School but I heard people say that Freshman year would be the hardest so I had to cancel my plans on playing football! :( :ouch: :grumpy: :indiff:
Oh anyone catch the Georgia Tech VS Bulldogs? I think GT won.

I think Georgia won that game, Pimp Racer. What I do here with these threads is to try to come up with as many games as possible. If you know your teams, just do a Find in each forum to find the team you're looking for. The majority of what I try to post is Division 1-A teams. So if you know your teams, I hope I can try to give it to you. I think the UGA/GT game is in my last weekly report.

Oh well it was pretty close I guess. Oh I can just go on ESPN.com or somewhere to check the scores if they are not here.

That's cool, Pimp Racer. You can also look up http://www.ncaafootball.net to find some more info if you're lucky.

For my next report, I'll post the results from this week and weekend, then all the rest of the college football talk will be in a seperate thread dedicated to the Bowl Games. I'll try to reply daily with Bowl Game results. You also have my say-so to post results of the bigtime Bowl Games from the Rose to the Orange. From Pasadena to Miami. You got my word, player!

Congratulations to the Virginia Tech Hokies, 2004 ACC Champions.

As predicted before the game, Hurricane season is over in Miami.

Its funny how we were predicted to be no better than sixth in the ACC and are the ACC Champtions.
