I put 'collision' for a reason, can't say I noticed it before the update, but I've noticed it now so anyway:

When two cars bump into each other (AI or otherwise), they don't actually hit each other, they seem to hit an imaginary cushion of air leaving them about 20cm apart.

<EDIT>
Easiest way to see this is from over the bonnet view in a replay, either watch two battling AI cars, or watch from the car behind as they 'bump' off each other. Or just hit AI cars yourself...
</EDIT>

Is this PD's reason why there's no damage?

"Ah yes, there is realistic damage, but fortunately the cars are all protected by an invisible, impenetrable 10cm force field on all sides"

Maybe it's some property of this incredible force field that causes the 'collision' physics to be a bit odd?

On a slightly related topic, if we do get damage, then they'll have to improve the AI, as otherwise, they'll all take each other out in every race, not to mention smashing your car to pieces every so often...

I doubt this is the reason. I would have thought that a simple, invisible shape is used for collision detection as it is more efficient to test for a collsion between simple shapes (an invisible box around the car) than complex ones (the car model itself). Per-polygon collision / hit detection is very processor hungry and would slow the game's framerate. Besides, I've never noticed this so as far as I am concerned the collsion detection does the job.

I doubt this is the reason.

To be honest, I didn't think for one second that this was the reason, the post was a bit tongue in cheek...

Really I think the AI issue is probably more of a talking point, as if damage is implemented of whatever form, are the AI cars to be invincible? :crazy:

If not, they hit each other a lot in a typical race, they're going to end up just taking themselves out. PD couldn't put in a race of more than about 5 laps without the AI all retiring...

Not to mention casual gamers may get a bit annoyed when during a race the AI rear ends their F40 and they have to pay tens of thousands to get it repaired. I suppose that's what the restart button is for.

I have noticed this and it annoys me, because I can tell how wide the car is and
when I cut things tight sometimes, I may hit another car or hit a wall because of the bad hit detection, not because I actually hit it.

These things are getting funny, I had that quite often ( not always ) before SPECIII update... Now collisions are improved tremendously , feels just about right. I can get like mm to the other cars without hitting them ( as long they don't brake check or me making a mistake ) !

:odd:

* just a thought maybe everyone complaining about something got worse or noticing an improvement should say what internet speed and NAT type he/she has rather than what TV or something ?

NAT 1
Everything improved , only time trials are lagging BADLY

I doubt we will see damage this way. We'll probably get damage per race and instant and free repair of damage either in the pits or after the race. Implementing a cost for the repair of cars (and the possibility for cars to be completely ruined by a 300 km/h crash) would mean GT5 would be the first GT game with a 'game over' screen. And novice drivers might see it a lot! Remember: A GT game usually starts with just enough money to buy 1 second hand car!

True, but damage would be like a new beginning for GT games, maybe they could make a Sim mode where you have to pay and a beginners mode with free repairs...
However Id love to see that game over screen!! 👍

I think you're probably right, PD won't put in a Game Over screen, but I think that's a shame, and that that's exactly the kind of damage we need, expensive, game risking damage.

Those first races would be truly fantastic if you were genuinely scared of crashing and hitting opponents.

Maybe with any luck they'll do Standard physics and Arcade Mode you don't have to get anything repaired, and Professional you do.

As GT5 will most probably have an Arcade Mode then it still wouldn't really be Game Over for people, they could just start another career, or play around in Arcade mode.

Alternatively, PD could put in some challenges (like the challenge hall from GT4) but whereby the car is provided for you?

Anyway, we're going to get wish-listy if this carries on :scared::nervous:

To H20HYBRID_GT (with regards to your 17th October post), I was talking about in offline mode, online means you don't get any replays and yes, the lag issue may cause odd behaviour.

Offline however, you can see clearly in replays and during the race if the AI hit each other that there's a noticeable distance between them when they 'hit'

OH, I thought we´re talking about online... you probably right about the offline modes, dont know almost never play offline. :)

But I again agree the two different modes with damage added would certainly make a lot more sense than now and PD need to step up somehow ...KY not even thinking about GT5 yet, but we are. :sly:

But where does this stop then. If you have to pay for repairs, you should have to pay for fuel, (sets of used) tyres, general maintenance etc. I think this would be beyond the idea of GT. I would be very happy with just the damage model that could kick you out of a race.
It would be great for the more experienced racers though.

I think in the end more people would be annoyed than pleased by it.

On the online/offline thing: I would like everything to be the same online and offline.

Sorry, this is indeed getting a bit off topic-ish.
