Bear with me on this...but I am wondering if there is a problem with community events.

I find myself getting such massively inconsistent times that improving my laps with setup science is almost impossible. This is a normal scenario:
1. Fire up PC2 and load Community Event.
2. Load set up and put in 3 laps.
3. Exit to adjust setup
4. Put in 3 laps.
5. Repeat 3-4 until time improves.

Now here's the thing. After I adjust the set up at Step 3 and do 3 more laps, I sometimes find my times have changed dramatically. I am talking 2-3 seconds slower per lap. As if I am driving on a different circuit. The only fix is to exit the game and come back in to try again. Only then, does it seem that the game loads the parameters correctly and I can lap consistently again.

I know there is a setup loading issue and that may account for it too, but I am wondering if when the game loads, it might not be loading the Live 3.0 as well. It might explain why even if the set up is loaded, the times are still erratic. It would make sense as to why there are areas on the circuit where I am losing time, and I shouldn't be. Unless I am driving on a different grip level every time I load the circuit.

So I wondered, is there a problem with PC2 loading the dynamic circuit environment? And does that make hot lapping times almost incomparable?

Thoughts?

If it was a lost grip issue the difference in grip would be so great as to be unmistakable. Is that what you're saying, that the actual feel of the car is akin to going from warm soft tires to cold hard tires? Or does the car feel somewhat similar just slower? A video would be nice BTW.

I will see if I can do a video.

And yes, it is a complete lack of grip, but on same tyres, same setup bar a few minor tweaks. Say for example, first corner at Oulton Park _ i drive to a delta of a hard power 3rd gear with plenty of space given on exit - this is below flat out to give a nice stable run through the corner.

The first time I run this, it is fine - i then adjust the set up to give me more bite on turn in (+1 on front wing for example).
The second time I run this with the revised setup, the car understeers off the circuit completely.

No faster, no different turn in or braking points, no change that is recognisable as i am not flat out . I quit out, and then without changing the set up try again. this time I get the same response as the first time.

Is very weird :S

One thing I would check is to make sure you still have the same setup loaded. I've noticed that sometimes when you restart a session, you lose your custom setup and go back to a default setup. I'd also check the tire temps to make sure they are the same temperature as it could possibly be a tire heating bug of some kind. If you do end up doing a video, try and cycle through the HUD displays (at a reasonably slow speed) at the beginning of each run.

Yeah I dunno about after patch 4.0 but previously if you kept restarting the session to change your setup, once in a while (and sometimes each time) it would change your setup back to default or something else. Keep an eye on that

Yep, setup bug. Or as far as I can see it is.
In the most recent community events, the Daytona NASCAR challenge and the Scottish Aston Modern challenge, the tyres just go cold on me, no matter how much aggression I put in to the lap. Default set up, or fastest drier ghost setup loaded.

So I am losing so much time due to tyres being cold. The Aston challenge, I had to go to a harder tyre than the top guys and that was costing me lots over the lap. Same on NASCAR, I lose heat after a lap, so the car starts to skim rather than grip.

Oh well, maybe in the next patch, the setup will be fixed. It isn't game breaking, that is for sure, but does cause me issues in knowing where I am losing time vs the top guys in hot lapping.

The in-game date for this event is the 18th of February, so you can't expect the track to be warm or for your tyres to stay warm. Everybody will be in the same boat :).

The only thing you can do, as I did with the Aston/Bannoch challenge, is try to drive around the lack of overall grip that the cold tyres will be giving you. And yes, my tyres were going cold by the end of the first S/F straight in that one, there was nothing I could do to stop that happening.

So very true, but this might not be what I am experiencing. I mean that there is no grip in the tyres at all. I follow the ghost car and they turn in, they grip, they accelerate. For me, when the issue occurs, I am on ice. No turn in, no grip, and acceleration produces massive tank slappers. Very little steering input or throttle. The car is nowhere.

Reload and then I am on pace. I am not expecting to be as fast as the top guys (know my limits...haha) but in the first sector of that Scottish challenge my split time in the first corner went from 0.4 (acceptable cos I am awful at braking) to a full 2.9s. And that is just the first corner!!!

You can see why this has me confused.

I honestly don't know what to suggest. I don't experience anything like that myself and certainly haven't during any of the community events. I was just responding more to the "tyres going cold" point, in that it isn't unexpected at all, given the event conditions :)

I really appreciate your help. I often follow your ghost so having some input from you is very beneficial.

Although not related yo this issue, I have been learning slot about setup by comparing yours to my baseline.

Thank you for being so quick. :)

That's what she said ;)

Glad the ghosts help. I wouldn't put too much stock into analysing my setups - I know nothing about what I'm doing, I drag the numbers around and see if I like the change. It is all done through trial and error. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (mostly the latter) :)

Well, this is a bit of a shocker. I am REALLY glad I didn't take the normal route and curse SMS and Project Cars 2, saying how awful their game is, etc.

Turns out, although I do have the setup up issue, that wasn't counting for the handling issue I was experiencing. Cue the rather embarrassed face.

My old but to date reliable G27 wheel is broken. Such a subtle break that I didnt even notice. Turns out the pedals were spiking. Pure chance I saw it when I was in a online race and struggling after qualifying on pole. I cycled so I could see the full diagnostics layout on screen to see if I had the wrong tyres loaded for the race, and there it was....throttle and brake spiking, in no way mapped to my foot inputs!!

Yep, that would most definitely have caused the issues I was experiencing!!

So a new wheel has been ordered....tomorrow, delivery permitting, may be a good day :)

Don't WD40 anything! The worst 🤬 to spray on mechanical parts.

hahaha @ WD40!!

I went the easy route. Searched google for my symptoms - found a youtube video showing me how to swap out sensors in pedals....realised it was a heck of a project for one so screwdriver challenged as me - bought new wheel!! :D
