Comparing RB25DET to RB25DET Neo

As the year starts, im wanting to buy a skyline, ethier a R33 ($23,000) with RB25DET or a more reliable car the R34 ($28,000) RB25DET neo.
I've heard that the RB25DET is more better in terms of performance, but the Neo version will save petrol, because of the VVT, variable timing system. Give your suggestion. How you skyline owners, what do you think. would i be better buying the R33, and save that money on performance upgrade or the R34.
 
I also have heard that the engine in the R33 can give more power when modified and tuned, but that probably only comes into play when you're reaching the limits of what those engines can do. So I don't think that's really a huge factor when it comes to making your decision, unless you want to build a 1000hp monster or something.
