Volvo comes with sexy sounding turbocharged inline 5, while scirocco comes out with genderless sounding weedcutter.

I would avoid the C30 just to avoid the Twilight references.
 
Scirocco generally gets the better reviews in all the mags i've read. It also looks much better in the flesh. IMO.

^ This. I like the C30 and it wins brownie points for having both 5-cyl petrol and diesels, but the Scirocco is the better handling, the better looking, the better inside... just better in general. And the R version is a Focus RS beater...

 
I'd avoid a Volvo just for the endless "Volvo driver" references. Haven't driven either but I'd actually be tempted to say the Ford Focus ST/XR5 Turbo.
 
I personally think the Volvo is a brilliant car, but having never seen a Scirocco, I can't make a fair assessment. The Volvo would likely be a wonderful second hand car, as it is far too expensive brand-new for what you get. The new styling improvements are pretty awesome, but its not perfect.

The center stack and nifty radio are pretty legit. If I had the cash and found a used one for a fair price, I'd consider it.
