Have you ever started a series, and then when you're more than halfway through it you decide once and for all you wish you had chosen another car, even if you're winning?

I just finished the JGTC championship last night. Trying to stay true to the theme, I used the only JGTC car I had, the Calsonic Skyline. I know many people will disagree, but I hate that car. By the fifth race I was dreading getting back to it (I have to do series' over the course of many days now).

Why do I hate it? For starters that engine note was like sandpaper on my eardrums. It lacks torque; off the line the Supras blew me away. The steering was twitchy (maybe a tuning issue on my part). Definitely the worst FR I've encountered in the game.

I ended up skipping as many races as I could just to get it over with. I won the Castrol Mugen NSX, which I took for a spin before bed and I sure wish I'd had that one to do the series with. I can tell the Mugen and I will become good friends. For starters we'll go an finish up the races I skipped together.

That's odd, I've found "Big Bllue" to be quite a well mannered racer.

Can't do much about the engine note, but maybe we can do something about handling. Would you be up to Tweaking and Testing possible configurations? If you post up the settings you ran, I'm sure a few of us could point to a few tweaks to improve upon them. Just possibly, we might find that Big BLue can be a friend indeed.

You'll love the Mugen,... though I like the Raybrig better,... it's only cosmetics though.

As ffor the FR JGTC cars,... they all suck the big donkey IMO. The Pennziol is good for drifting, but thats about it.

Do you know about the early upshift in Skyline JGTC cars?

If not, you should be shifting up before you hit 6000rpm in the Skylines. Trust me :D

I mess with the setting very minimally. But from memory here's how it was set up. I use a general set up and tend to leave it forever, except for the tranny auto set-up, and maybe spring rate and ride height:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stage 2 turbine

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super slicks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spring rate (excuse my graphical representaions, I can't remember the exact numbers)
[____________________________l___]
[_________________________l______]

Ride height:
[l_______________________________]
[__l_____________________________]

Damper bound/rebound
Max

Camber:
left as is.

Toe
.05/-.05

Stabilizers
Max

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tranny
Individual gear setting left as is
Auto set up adjusted to redline on longest straight for each track.
LSD left as is

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Downforce
Max/Max

---------------------------------------------------------------------

TCS
Off

ACM
Off
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Please enlighten me.

I did figure that out. You can hear it and feel it. But I still think the accel on those Supras is superior.

The front springs look waaaaaay to tight,.... keep the rear the same,.....

Try 5/5/5 on the LSD once, should keep the rear-end in check a little better......

Try 1/1 for stabs,.. work up from there,....should offer a little softer responce.

put front ride height at 5mm or so higher than lowest)and rear 1 click lower

JMO.

well,.... I've never encountered "twitchy" steering..... but yes, if the front is to tight, it will want to understeer and even bounce at non-level track surfaces.

but if your talking about "straight-line efficientcy", then you toe angle is the culprate.

Toes 'in' will offer excelent straight line efficientcy, but will decrease turning radius.

So,... for optimal straight line performance, you would want a -2/2 on the toe.

You should also take into consideration where your driving. Slower, tight courses will demand an open toe with tighter (higher) front springs. The high speed, flowing courses like an 'in' toe and a softer front.

So then that would be like (another graphical representaion):

Front tires:

\ /

Rear:

/ \

(exaggerated of course)

For maximum striaght line speed?

toes out will make steering corrections larger and the car will want to drift left to right more.

My favorite and most common set-up is -2/-2

To throw a bit of confusion at it, I tend to leave the toe alone, and adjust the Camber a bit more. 2.7-3.3 at the front and 1.5 to 1.7 in the read.

I'll agree with RER in that the Front Srprings are way too tight.

I'll say that I do differ in my thoughts on the Stabablizers. I start at 3/3 and tend to tighten them (higher number) if I get too much body roll.

Hopefully this helps out a bit.

Actually, I think we agree  When I say lower for looser, I mean, as you said, more body-roll. 👍 Tighter (higher) for less.

:D

Camber is angling the tires vertically.

As your car turns a corner, wieght transfers from an even distrubution across the contact patch (Tire to road) to a lopsided contact patch. It puts more pressure on the outside of hte tire when cornering.

So, if you angle the tire, the contact patch stays closer to an even distrubution.

RER: agreed. However, I start at usually a higher rate, when running race cars. 1/1 is way too low, when dealing with that much horsepower.

toe can be measured by looking down on the wheels. You'll see the front of the tire angled either away or towards the chassis.

Looking down at the car at a -2/2 toe

Camber can be seen if you were to hypothetically lay on your stomach and look forward at the front of the car. Camber is when the top of the tire is tilted in towards the chassis.

/-o--o-\ = the little o's are the headlights, lol.

I tried to find a good visual description, but my efforts were no good :(

Okay. That makes sense. But I always thought toe was camber. And I didn't really understand camber so I wasn't likely to catch it.

So camber wouldn't effect straight line efficiency much?

camber, in GT3, from what I can tell, has no effect on straight-line efficiency.

Camber will ultimately effect tire wear the most.
At a close Second, it will effect cornering-grip performance.
Thrid, it will effect accelleration perfomance (tire spin)

What do you think of the Castrol Supra??
It rocks man!!
Good handling... good speed... good acceleration!! 👍

lately i've found some good set ups by going to www.gtvault.com and after finding the car i want to tune, look for "fumes" setups...his are well thought out and so far, work great...i checked and he has a setup for the calsonic, but i didn't check the details to see if his are different than yours...the ones i've used by him usually have -1.0/0.5 toe-in, seems like thats one of his trademarks...i used his road setup on my focus rally car (maxxed out hp) and won an exciting battle with a C5R Vette in the amateur league american championship...it beat me closely at the two seattle races, i creamed him at trial mountain, beat him in a drafting contest at super speedway, and then, while right on my rear bumper, he did a 360 at the hairpin in the dirt on the second lap at laguna seca

A guy who calls himself DaddyGary and sometimes comes around here referred me to that site for settings, too. They worked pretty good and I was able to get a 1:11.XXX (or somwhere around that) on Rome Circuit Reverse in an Arta (GT2). Sad... I couldn't do that today.
