Hi guys. I'm having a problem with various games for my pc (rfactor and fs2004).

I start the game it runs for about 2 seconds then goes back to the desktop (the game is still running), it just minimise's it. If I maximise it again it just does the same thing.

Both games used to work fine, I haven't changed any settings on the computer since. I tried re-installing the game it worked fine the first time I played it after however now it just goes back to how it is before.

Any help greatly appreciated.

click on Start and type Event Viewer in the search bar, when the Event Viewer comes up look through the event logs on the left of the screen and find entries for the times when you've tried to run the game. If you get an event at the same time as when the games quit, click on the event (they will show with a red x) and it will give information in the little window at the bottom of the event viewer.

If you don't know what it is saying, post it in here.

It could be a myriad of problems. You've ruled out issues with the games them self, but that is about it. Could be a corrupt driver, your OS could be quite poorly, etc.

What OS do you use?

Also, run anti-virus scan (unless you've got something Norton, in which case buy a new Anti-virus program), run some scans with Spybot and install CCleaner, run CCleaner and get it to clean out your registry, you can back up your registry with CCleaner (it will prompt you when you get it to scan for issues), but I regularly use it to maintain my machines.

Nothing comes up on event viewer. I use CCleaner regularly and have no other problems with the computer except this so I guess its probably not that.

I forgot quite an important peice of info. When it minimises it shows a message in from the taskbar saying that I should change to the optimal resolution (which I'm allready set too).

How does that matter? Steam pops up a "preparing to launch <game>" box yes, but lbsf1 has clearly said that the games run for a few seconds then minimise themselves - that =/= Steam launch behaviour. rFactor and FS2004 aren't Steam games, anyway.

lbsf1 - try ether changing your resolution (whether it's at your monitor's native res or not, change it anyway) and see if the games will launch. Failing that, are you able to set them to run in windowed mode? (in rFactor the windowed option is in the config utility; not sure about FS2004)

Did you change monitors? The games may be set to a resolution the new monitor can't handle, even if its lower than the monitor's maximum res.

Sharky, I thought it wasn't a STEAM game, I was just confirming it was not a STEAM game itself. If it was, there would have been a forum that the OP is able to use as well, just to cross-reference information we would have given to him.

I have started to use STEAM itself just before Christmas and I have noticed a few strange things with it as I was not used to the program itself. I assumed the OP was used to all sorts of games (as I have known the OP to mention using PC racing games often in topics on gtplanets) and just wanted to close off one avenue of information.

wfooshee seems to have a quite plasible and logical explanation above....

Hmmn it seems to be working occasionally now I have tried what you guys have suggested.

Thanks
Luke
