Welp, my Computer has been acting very strange lately. It's been restarting all by itself. Then today the screen went blank. I couldn't restart it manually(pressing button down and hold). So I unplugged it and plugged it back in. It's weird because this computer has been so good to me over the past 4 years. It's a 2005 HP Pavilion m7100y. It's in very good condition and I treat it very well. Why is it doing this? There are no viruses. :indiff:

When I turn it back on, it seems to get slower every time.

Halp?

This may be a hardware issue. Something might be overheating, or a fan might not be working. I dont think its still under warranty.

Have you installed any software recently?

Have you installed any hardware recently?

Have you checked all the connections inside the case?

If you can't restart it manually I would say this is most likely a hardware issue. Pressing reset should send a reset signal around the system which over-rides everything else. Mabye you should get someone to check your motherboard.

Well if the PSU is shot you should get this power supply because I found out you have a rather small case and a regular PSU might not fit in that case. But to make sure you should measure and check the PSU in your computer if its a ATX or microATX PSU.

No I haven't installed anything except a dvd drive, but that about 5 months ago. which is way before this started.

Did the restarting become more frequent?

Yes it has.

Well read through this and go through all the options.

If that does not work try a different monitor. If not then try these steps to see if the power supply is good or not:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=500977&rule=24082

Lastly, did the computer get modified(changed) recently(hardware and software)?

It doesn't come on though. I waited for a good while. The tower just became a frozen brick. If I can't turn it off via power button, then I doubt it has to do with the monitor.

Then I have a feeling that your PSU died and that you need a new one. Open your case and make sure you check what kind of PSU you need. Some PSU's tell you on a sticker but if it does not tell you of what ATX type it is then measure the length and width of the PSU and compare it to the ATX12V PSU's on newegg.

Ok. Thanks a lot for your guy's help!

I wouldn't touch a $21 PSU with a ten foot pole. Always go name-brand with a power supply, and check that it has good reviews.

Well Eric they don't get much more expensive and I found one here that has the 80 plus certification to help save energy.

I actually never looked at microATX PSUs before...When comparing all of them, the Logisys model has the most reviews and is the only brand I've heard of before...So that's what I'd have to go with.
