I have been experiencing a slowdown on my computer. I mean like programs taking forever to load up like MS Word. Internet is moving along at like 100kbps consistent when I should have 3 Megabit cable. I defrag and do disk cleanup often. I installed system mechanic 5 and cleaned the registry and that majorly boosted it but it still doesn't go like it used to. I do know I need more RAM.... or just a better computer as I have a 1.8 Ghz PentiumIIII and 256MB of RAM running Windows XP. Please note, I have no method of backing up info so reformatting is out of the question.... for now at least. Thanks in advance. Bye

I don't trust Windows Disk Defragmenter.

See if you can find a free 3rd party one.

(1.8 Ghz / 256 MB should perform pretty well if set up right; my 1.5 Ghz / 256 MB desktop is quick enough running win 2K)

Yeah the processor and ram don't really come into play until you get into the high PC load programs like gaming and program compilers.

Was it a drastic slowdown, like one day it stopped working, or was it a gradual thing? My mom installed virus protection on her computer and it slowed down by at least half.

Check for spyware and background programs that might be hogging RAM and CPU power.
