Computer takes forever to boot up.

When I turn on my computer, it takes from 10 to 20 minutes for the machine to boot up. It sits on the Windows XP loading screen for a long time. Can somebody explain to me what the reason could be. After booting up it runs fine. I'm having to use my on-board graphics chip due to recent death of my graphics card last month. But this problem only started yesterday.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is the computer a laptop? If so, your mother board might be damaged. That happened to my brother, and his computer took 2 weeks to start up. No, i am not kidding.

lol why would he even bother? Well my computer has always taken around 10 mins to start, but its full of junk now... Maybe like mine then.

Check your start up list to see what applications are being loaded at start up.

You can go to Run > msconfig or I like to use Spybot to show what is at start up. You should really have no applications running at start up.

-Desktop PC
-I don't think any unnecessary applications are running. I tried a virus scan and got nothing. It's starting to get better now. Maybe just have been from leaving the PC on for days at a time. Lots of stress on it.

What are the system specs.

Leaving a PC on for long periods should not have any noticeable impact on booting times. I leave mine on for a week straight normally, with no issues.

Use "CTRL + R" to open the run window, and type "msconfig" from there, go to Start Up and screen cap everything there for us to look at. I imagine there is quite a bit of stuff starting up that you are unaware of.

Anti Virus will not take notice of spyware and other malware that can leech system resources; I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy to check for various bits of crap on the system.
