Hey guys, I'll keep this short but my Mum's computer wont turn on anymore.

When you plug the power cord in the small light comes on from the back of the PSU, but when I press the power button on the front nothing happens and the PSU light goes out (until I unplug and plug back in again)

I guess the PSU is broked but is there anything else I can try and check before I call it dead?

use some compressed air or something similar to blow all the dust out of the case and check all the connections.

desktop or laptop?
Do Gabkicks hint...
If that doesn't work it's probably the psu, you could check that with a voltometer.
On a desktop it is easily changable.

Generally if PSU's go they tend to leave a sign, be it a smell or a flash mark on a bit of metal.

Desktop, it was quite dusty, I'll try and give it more of a clean and try again.

How would I check it with a voltmeter?

I'll take it out and have a look tomorrow.

Thanks for all your replies.

from the cables coming out of the psu (main connector, pci-e,...) you can check with a powered psu if the power goes through.
But as Sureboss said if it's fryed you gonna smell or see it

Put the black lead into ground(black wire on any power connector. Like the Molex cable) and hook up the red lead into the red wire(5V wire). If you put the red lead into the yellow wire you should get 12V. You should be able to get a result if you check for volts.

PSU light doesn't mean anything really other then the PSU light is on.

Your motherboard should have a light on it which shows if it's getting power or not. Remember, your power switch isn't connected to the PSU, it's connected to the Motherboard which is powered by the PSU.

If the motherboard has no power it's probably a dead PSU (Which in my experience sounds like the case), though just to be sure you can take out everything connected to the MB except the PSU and see if it receives power.

Well you can run an power supply without a computer. With the motherboard connector(it should have 20 or 24 pins), take a paper clip and hook one end to the green wire and the other end to a black wire(ground). If it does not run it means it's dead.

Er, cable colours will be different as it's UK. Yellow + Green is the Earth, for instance.
