Okay, first I am kind of new to the Gran Turismo scene so please excuse if I sound a bit ignorant.

You see, I bought my PS2 about a month or so ago, got the GT3 pack cos I figured it was a good value and it was "kid friendly" (i have an 8 year old and thought it would be nice if i could share my toy). I bought a coupla other games over the weeks and played them, while GT3 gathered dust making an appearance occasionally for an Arcade mode battle with the child...

...but the other day tried my hand at Simulation mode, (after reading the excellent "Getting started guide" here on this forum) bought a PT Cruiser, won the Sunday Cup in the Biginner League and now I can't get to bed before 1 am.

The problem i found now is that i am not a "car guy" and although i understand the very basic concepts (Turbo=power=speed) i am having a hell of a time figuring out some of the more advanced concepts like NA vs Turbo: should I turbo upgrade every car I get? I put turbo in my Miata, but now when I am in 5th gear on the test track, she red-lines very quickly and that worries me. What can I do to remedy this.

Whoa, this post got big. Well, I just wanted to stand up and say "Hello. My name is ubersandwich and I am a Gran Turismo-aholic" and warn you all that you may be recieving some outlandishly noobish questions from me. I have already learned a bunch from lurking on this board and man, this game rocks.

Hello Ubersandwich, and welcome to GTPlanet! I've seen you online before, but it's great to finally see you posting - we've got too many lurkers here! :)

Welcome to GTPlanet, we hope you have a great time here and hope to see more posts from you!:D

Congrats on the PS2/GT3 purchase!;)

Should you turbo upgrade every car you get? I read that the stage 3 N/A kit is equivalent to the stage 4 turbo, so they're basically the same, except you get a cool blow off valve noise with the turbo.

What can you do to fix the redlining too quickly in 5th gear? Buy one of the transmissions that allows you to mess with the gear ratios. Either set the 5th gear's ratio wider, or set the final drive gear ratio wider, and that should give you a higher top speed, and keep it from redlinin' too quickly...

This probably won't help much, but I tried...:p:lol:

Welcome aboard!!!

Rather than go into details, I think you'd be well advised to go to the Gran Turismo 3 forums and look at the FAQs - there's a couple of good ones for people starting out!

Good luck with it. You're in for a long-trip. I'm fairly hard-core (but not a patch on some here!) and been playing for just over three months, and I've still got some way to go (the % completion says 91%, but in terms of time, that ain't even close).

Thanks, guys, for your warm welcome. I managed to sneak back to the forum between holliday weekend bloody marys (my girlfriend wants some quality time, but dammit, i need to finish the FR challenge).

I have nothing but good things to say about this game, well i could complain but would it do any good ;)? I have yet to sell a prize car (even that pink Vitz. After all, I will need it for the Vitz race) and now fancy buying a New Beetle to trick out... I have a soft spot for the VW Bug - which reminds me... for GT4: More classic cars!! It would be nice to plug some old classics (tho I imagine that a 68 Beetle won't make the cut) into the simulator and see how they match up against the state of the art.

Gotta go, the g/f is calling..
"What are you doing in there?"
"Uhhhh, checking my e-mail?"

I think the old Bettle was in GT1 or GT2, but I can't swear to it. Either way, it's great to have a conversationalist aboard! I enjoy reading member's posts that are long and "intelligent" (: And those are few and far between.

As for GT3, yes it is one of the best games out right now. Lately I've been liking it more than CounterStrike and Infiltration (first person shooter games on the computer). Building up a nice garage of cool cars, and tweaking them in for your driving style is a lot of fun. About keeping the Vitz, that's not a bad thing, it's even good. Starting with your point that you'll need it later, which is true, to needing it MUCH later (again in Professional League), and there really isn't a reason to sell any of your cars. You have 200 spots in your garage, and your credits (money) will build up faster than you could reasonably spend it. I have over 8.5 million credits. I haven't bought or sold a car since about half way through the Amature League. In all honesty, it seems quite likely that a motivated person could win the game without purchasing a car or tuning parts EVER. If you start by getting all golds on the A license tests to get the Miata, you're ready to go win some Beginer League races and build your GT3 empire ... from NOTHING! Pretty cool eh? (:

Well, we're all glad you've chosen GTPlanet as your source for GT3 info. I think you'll be able to find answers to just about any question you have.

But it is a particularly vile shade of pink. Definitely one to drive in bumper-cam view! :)

.... and now I can't get to bed before 1 am.

The same thing happened to me when I got a PSX and GT (the original Gran Turismo) and I've been hooked ever since...

Got GT2 and GT3 as soon as it came out. Bought the PS2 to play GT3 - waited about 8 months after buying the PS2 to play GT3.

Anyone has a similar story to tell?
