I usually use a wheel and mostly stink with the DS3 (especially the sticks) but been trying to avoid the hastle of pulling out the cockpit every time I want to take a quick couple of laps.

Have the controller reconfigured from Options so I could use R2 to accel and L2 to brake. But whenever I go to race, it's the default controls with the sticks as accel/brake and the R2/L2 do nothing... What am I doing wrong?

Outside of the sticks and turns (angle always seems to change when I'm in a turn) but the L1/L2 for MT always fly through 2 or 3 gears even if I'm doing a light tap. Anyone see that and/or suggest a better fix?

I use the DS3 exactly the way you describe. Because you are getting 2 or 3 gear changes when you only want 1, sounds like the actual switch is faulty giving dodgy information to the playstation. Can you try another controller from a friend?

L1=Change down
R1=Change up
L2=Brake
R2=Accelerate

The right stick will still accelerate and brake.

I used right stick up for upshifting/right stick down for downshifting for 9 months until I got a wheel.

This 👍
But you thumb must have passed 9 really painful months :sly:

Did you change the PS3 to tell it you were using a DS3 and not a wheel? Just wondering. Beyond this I have no idea.

Accelerate - R2
Brake - L2
Gear Up - X
Gear Down - Square
Look Left - Right Stick ( Pressing Left )
Look Right - Right Stick ( Pressing Right )
Right Stick UP - Nothing
Right Stick DOWN - Nothing
Look Back - D - Pad Down

ALSO - Check you are changing the settings for Pad Port 1 & using Pad Port 1 , otherwise you're changing settings for the player 2 pad , ( Which you're not using )

I've used the default, but am thinking of changing soon; would Gear changes on the R3/L3 be difficult?

Here's my proposed changes:

Gas - R-Trigger
Brake - L-Trigger
Gear Up - L3
Gear Down - R3; so that you can steer and shift down without moving other fingers off triggers.

How do you do that? The wheel isn't plugged in...

Just go into the settings menu (the gear symbol) and make sure it is set to DualShock 3, and not a wheel. I do not have a wheel myself, so I don't know if this could pose an issue.

I've gone into settings and adjusted settings for both Controller 1 and Controller 2 but didn't see anywhere it was "set." Tinkering with all the settings I have everything working but throttle and brake. Neither the face buttons nor L2/R2 will work to accel/brake for some reason.

I do have a Nyko IR controller and usually reset (through XMB) my controller as #1. maybe it's interfering? I'll try to take it out tomorrow, I guess.

Took off the Nyko and didn't make a difference. I tried to assign throttle and brake to R2/L2, as well as leaving it on the x and square. When I press, I notice a small "blip" but it won't hold down. Reverse (holding triangle) doesn't work, either. I tried with 2 separate DS3.

Do I have to do something to "set" the controller? It doesn't highlight in options, for example...
