Perhaps Rallying in GT can actually be considered closer to Rallycross? After all, it is on a circuit and against competitors. Maybe PD could make some small-scale 'rallies' - just two or three - made up of proper narrow stages (against just a few) so we would have one tarmac and two dirt? That way we'd have proper rallies, Rallycross and standard road racing. Take a look at the famous (?) shot of the Bluebird on the Ice Lake. That track looks like it was made by people carving out a track on a frozen lake, a lot closer to Ice Racing than rallying.

And hopefully rallies in GT4 won't be 'be in front at the end of this lap'-type affairs like in GT2. Maybe if they lasted a few laps and there were more competitiors (up to four, maybe?) it would be a lot more popular and a lot more fun. And now that we're getting histoic cars in GT4 it will be even better.

Yep, it would be a severe disappointment if the Audi quattro was not included. If it was then it would easily have won best sounding car of GT4! :)

Yepp! The straight 5 sounds awesome
👍

I love the sound of five cylinder warble, but prefer aural pleasure from Ferrari V6 in Stratos. What’s the fastish volvo with a 5 cyl turbo at the moment?

I agree the rally sections of GT games is closer to rallycross.

Which is why I would like to see some real life rally cross courses. Courses where you come off the tarmac and onto mud, not just a loose gravel surface. A couple more cars on track at the same time would be nice, although I know that the extra processing power has been used for smoke effects in the past. Hopefully they've found some more power for extra cars.

I love the rally sections of GT, and I'm looking forward to the new tracks and cars they've got lined up. :)

Road cars or race cars?

I've seen some nutty 600+ bhp 240 rallicross and hillclimb cars...

For stock road cars, isnt the fastest volvo the 2.3L 850 T5R? It's either that or the new S60R, I think.

My two anticipated rally cars are not in yet. The Lancia 037 and the peugeot 405 t rally (hopefully the pikes peak version. I guess I'll vote for the delta s4

The 037, while a good car, was obsolete as soon as it started competing in Group B. The S4 on the other hand is a real monster.

Yeah it was rear wheel drive when most companies were implementing four wheel drive. Good car, and quite easy on the eyes unlike some other rally cars.

And oh so controversial, as the fuel tanks were under the driver's and co-driver's seats. It was an absolute missile - you just accelerated, wrestled with the steering wheel and hoped for the best when you hit the brakes, swung it though the corner and did it all over again. Completely unmanageable.

You should get yourself some Group B video footage then, and view it from the in-car shot, the drivers were on a death-wish, completely crazy... (as for the spectators... !!!), pity Group B died, makes you wonder what we would have been watching come mid-90's if it was still going at that stage... I can't thinking stuff like Rod Millens Celica, 950-1000hp...(which by the way I've seen in action, 1998 in New Zealands equivalent to Pikes Peak, amazing sounds, totally different to other turbo sounds, I still watch our home vid of it to this day...)

What's interesting is how many manufacturers were developing Group B machines. Porsche had the 959 (thank god that was spared for the Paris-Dakar), Toyota had the MR2, and its even speculated that Ferrari's 288 GTO Evo was made to compete in it. But eitherway (even if it wasn't cancelled), FISA wanted to replace it with Group S (basically a class for futuristic rally prototypes). In fact, Lancia, Ford, and Audi were already developing vehicles for that class.

Everyone from GM and Ford to Seat and Skoda had a Group S prototype in development when the two classes (Group B and Group S) were banned ...

Come to think of it, I don't know why they cancelled the Group S. They were limited to 300hp and weren't the monsters that Group B machines were. Damn FISA.

It was because of the homologation (registration) rules. Group B required manufacturers to make a set level of cars each year in order to qualify. But so that the sport could become more competitive, manufacturers were allowed to add extra wings (like the 205 T16 E2) to only a certain percentage of the cars - around about 20%.

What they didn't count on was the teams exploiting the rules - although they added the parts to the required percentage, they simply kept the cars in storage, so if something new came up, they simply added to the stored cars and they could add a new aerodynamic aid.

The problem with Group S was that the percentage was lowered from 20% to 10%, which means that teams could pump out faster cars in less time than before. even though the engines were limited to 300bhp, the teams could use exotic components, add them to 10% of the 'road-going' (though never sold) cars they made and they could produce lighter faster cars.

Besides Group B was supposedly limited to about 400-450bhp, but it was rumoured that many teams had developed cars that were actually in the neighbourhood of 550-600bhp. It was only a matter of time before someone lost control and died or, as Tony Pond put it:

"As a group of drivers, we knew it was just a matter of time before someone got killed. Sooner or later, you were going to have the proper Group B accident - an Ari Vatanen job, the proper one - but with a few spectators around; wrap it all up in a big one. I think it would have come sooner or later: a somersaulting Group B car exploding amongst the crowd."

Sadly it was a great driver, Henri Toivonen and his co-driver who died when their Lancia Detla S4 exploded in Corsica 1986.

Just so long as they don't have that stupidly-small number on the side and go back to the large ones that can easily be seen, I'll be happy ...
