Confused about wheels

I'm a little bit confused about the various wheels supported for GT5.

I will be buying GT5 soon with a PS3 since I assume the price will go down for both with the arrival of the PS4 and GT6 and I've been deliberating about which wheel to get.

I drive manual in real life and love it. I love it so much I just can't have any fun driving automatic (I know it sounds like I'm a stuck up person). So I want a wheel that has a clutch pedal and a shifter that moves. When I see videos of people with the DFGT, it just looks like they click buttons on the shifter to shift, they don't move the shifter.

So tl;dr my question is this: what wheels have clutch pedals and a shifter that moves like a real shifter?

I guess to clarify about the "moves like a real shifter", I mean slides left and up for first and straight back for 2nd, then up, right, up for 3rd etc.

Thanks,
Sevin

The cheapest option would be the Logitech G27/G25. You could also go with a Thrustmaster T500 RS and then purchase the add-on TH8 RS shifter.

Fanatec bundles are an option as well, such as the GT3 + CSR pedals + shifters. It comes with two shifters, one sequential and one H.

If you live in the US, you have better bundles available with the CSR elite pedals (load cell breaks!). And it's all for a good price ($269 if I'm not mistaken). But if you live in the EU, Fanatec doesn't seem to like you and you should go for a G27.

So the cheaper option of a DFGT doesn't have a proper shifter, the cheapest I can go for with real shifters is the G25/27?

Cheapest, probably.

But the Fanatec delivered will cost you some $20 more. Imho well worth it, considering the pedals are not even comparable to the G27's, even if you invest time and more money to mod the G27 pedals into a load cell the CSR Elite's will still be much superior. Let alone the wheel, but as regarded in another (much like this one) thread, the wheel has features that are a matter of choice. Even then I prefer the Fanatec, and it's not even close.

[edit]
DFGT has +/- shifter and therefore no clutch.
You can have sequential shifters with clutch. For that matter, you can even have paddle shifters and a clutch (as is with the CSR wheel + pedals) and so on.

Hi Cedar - bear in mind that the clutch model in GT5 is very unforgiving, resulting in a lot of missed shifts unless you shift slowly. Although I haven't tried GT6 yet (getting it for Christmas) I have heard that the clutch model appears to be unchanged from GT5. I enjoy using the shifter (I use TH8RS with T500RS) for arcade mode and A Spec, but don't use it for online racing as it isn't possible to keep up with drivers using paddle shifters.

Logitech G25 was replaced a few years ago by G27 so G25 isn't an option if you are buying new.

You will probably already have thought about mounting the wheel and pedals, but if not you will need a good wheel stand (such as wheelstand pro) or if you have the space a driving rig.

Next, if the budget will stretch to it, think about adding tactile transducers to simulate engine vibration and kerb bumps - Buttkicker Gamer 2 or Aura AST2B Pro4 bass shakers hooked up to a subwoofer amp are good budget options. Personally I think tactile is almost as important to the gaming experience as a good wheel.

G27 is a great wheel for GT6. The pedals are WAY better than on the GT, and you can cheaply do the nixim or GTEYE brake mod if you feel the need to. Another advantage (of course) is the shifter, I'd say it's worth the extra cost over the DFGT by itself. It's not that the DFGT is BAD by any means, it's a great wheel for the casual player who wants a little more than the controller, but the G27 is a step above. Now if you want to get REALLY serious, then look to the T500.

Cheapest to most expensive categories:

1. Used Logitech Momo
2. Logitech DFGT
3. Logitech G27/Fanatec GT3 (and similar variants)
4. Thrustmaster T500RS/Fanatec CSW

Sections 3 and 4 are the ones with h pattern shifter availability.
I only include the Momo because for as low as $20, there's not much risk. Paddles only for manual on GT5 though. For some people it's worth it, even if it's just to see how into it they really are, and how far up the scale they'd like to go.

If I were you I would build an entry-level gaming PC, (ONLY COSTS 400 DOLLARS) and do the racing on it. The experience is not the same on console where you can only play the average GT5. Especially when you haven't bought it yet. So many options on PC and the FFB is usually even better most of the time.

If it matters at all, the Thrustmaster is sitting at around $600 on Amazon, Newegg has the G27 for $249
