Hi there!

Can anyone please help me! I just got a telewest cable internet and I have successfully connected it to laplop with a ethernet cable. However, I have purchased a Linksys WAG54G WIRELESS ADSL gateway, and I wish to connect the modem to it so that I can share the internet with my other PCs. I have set up the wireless network successfully but as a newbee, I have no idea how to connect my modem to my router. The router has a adsl input and I thought I can connect it to the ether net port on the modem.

Can any one please help! :)

Does the router have a WAN port? If so, connect that to the cable modem. If not, you need to buy a Router/Switch/Wireless access point like the Linksys WRT54G-UK.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I just checked and it does have a WAN port (RJ-11 ADSL Port ).
I'm pretty sure that my Linksys gateway is a swithc/access point/router.

Do I simply putl in the ethernet cable from my gateway to the cable modem?
I read some where that I might have to release my IPaddress b4 reconnecting them, but I not sure?

Any ideas?

Thanks Allan

Also thought I should mention that the gateway has a adsl modem built in! Not sure if this will conplicate things as the modem will be connected to the router which has it self a modem?????????????? I'm so confused!

No, you need a RJ-45 or ethernet port specifically for a dsl or cable modem to be hooked up. An RJ-11 port is for "phone" wiring. A "phone" wire is RJ-11. In the US you need a Linksys WRT-54G Wireless Router. They work great. That is what we have at our house. Then you can either, hook up your computers to it with the wireless connection, or you can hook it up with RJ-45 Ethernet cables, to the built in switch with either 4 or 8 ports. Or you can do both.

Yep, Cardude is right. Your Linksys box will not act as a router for your Telewest connection.

The Telewest cable modem (mine is a Motorola Surfboard) presents itself as an ethernet device, with an RJ-45 port. This plugs into the WAN port (also RJ-45) on the Linksys box. This then routes data to the four switch ports and to the wireless LAN.

If you've got receipt + packaging, you can take your box back and switch it for one that is not an ADSL router. I'm sure that the store deals with this all the time. If you don't have these, then try to flog it on eBay.

Here is a diagram -

You have your cable connection from the wall to your cable modem. You then need an RJ-45 Cable to go from the modem to the router. Right now you do but then your router has a RJ-11 port to plug it into, but you need an RJ-45 WAN, or broadband routing port to plug it into. The WRT-54G will route a broadband connection. From there you can either plug RJ-45 Cables into the switch on the router and network like that or you can use the wireless functions of the router, or you can use both.

Where it says internet you have an RJ-11 port and you need an RJ-45 port. This is the back of the WRT-54G so it has an RJ-45 port. It also has the 4 port RJ-45 switch.
