Connection speed

Hi everyone. I'm going to connect my PS3 to the internet and I have two options - 128 kbit/sec or 256 kbit/sec connections, the faster one being more expensive. I was curious, is it possible to play online without much lag with 128 kbit/sec or I have no choice but to get the faster connection?

I wouldn't take a chance. The quicker the better, and I doubt that you will pay twice the price for a connection that's twice faster (?) See how many kbps you get for 1$ from both the 128kb and the 256kb connection and make the best deal if you're that low on money. đź’ˇ

How much upload bandwidth do you get? Is it symmetrical (256 Kbps up, 256 Kbps down)? Is it wired or by satellite?

I would go with 256 Kbps if it's not too much more expensive. When I moved, my ISP thought I was paying for the cheap Lite plan instead of the regular High-Speed plan. Consequently, my download speeds dropped from 5 Mbps to 256 Kbps. I was wondering why web surfing felt slow again. There's too many Flash ads and giant images nowadays; Flash is a big presentation component of many websites, so blocking them all would be bad. It would still feel fast if you're moving up from dial-up modems.

Sorry I don't really know if it's symmetrical or not, but it uses the telephone wires, with some kind of splitter. I searched the web for info on how much speed is needed for online gaming on the PS3, but there doesn't seem to be an answer. I thought some of you could help me based on your own experience. By the way even 128 kbps is considered pretty fast from where I'm from.

It sounds like you have DSL from the telephone wires. Try 128 Kbps first. If you don't like what you see, then move up if possible. Aside from cost, it ought to be easy since there's no special hardware needed to move up.

My DSL has been quite poorly the last few days and, due to external issues, running at between 120 and 233kbps.

I've been unable to notice a difference when playing COD4 except when the ping wandered out past 100ms - which wasn't in any way dependant on speed. I had 122kbps and a ping of 61ms and was able to play just fine, but 220kbps and 102ms saw the lag impossible to live with...

Quicker is, naturally, better. But unless you have a sub-80ms ping, neither will be worth it.

Thanks, so online gaming is possible with those speeds. I guess I'll just take the slower one and see how it suits me, and upgrade if it doesn't. Just don't want to pay a single extra penny to this stupid operator.

Well, heres how it works for me, 160kB/s download speed and no lag, Whe nthe download runs out and we get 20kB/s, no lag, this is on CoD4...I dont get it but I like it:).

160 KBps would be 1280 Kbps or 1.25 Mbps. The little b or the big B makes a difference. :)

Latency can be a killer like Famine says.

Sure I cant get 4 bars when your half the world away but when playing in Australian and New zealand servers it is fine.
