Connectivity with 42" plasma

Im going to pickup my ps3/gt5 in a few days and have a few q's. I have an older 42" plasma that runs a whopping 852x480 so i know its not ideal however the questions i have are (it was given to me so im not complaining); Given the reolution does this mean i have to run games in 480p? And the only inputs i have on it are pc and serial connections. Can the PS3 plug straight into this? Sorry for the noob questions.
 
Yes, I think 480p is the closest to your resoloution, as for connectivity, you may aswell go for a normal connection, because 480p isn't a HD res.
 
wicked.. that ultra high resolution will look incredible on a 42" screen :grumpy:. Not to worry... something to save for in the future. So the ps3 has direct connectivity for a pc monitor? Or will i need to buy a conversion box as this tv has only pc/serial connections. Nothing else...
 
There are several ways you can try.

First of all, there is no VGA cable for the PS3. As stupid as it is, it doesn't exist. :scared:

There are HDMI to DVI adapters, but your screen has to support HDCP, or else you won't get a signal/image. There are also YUV/component to VGA adapters, which won't work either if your screen doesn't support it (HDCP again i guess).

I've tried it with a YUV to VGA adapter on my TFT (Samsung 19'' with a DVI and a VGA input), which didn't work.

I've ended up getting a new screen (also Samsung, 22'' with VGA/DVI/YUV/TV-Tuner/HDMI), where i can plug in a HDMI cable.

Also keep in mind...
If your screen does support the method of using a HDMI/DVI adapter for example, you still have no sound/audio. Which you will have to use from the optical out... since there is no "audio out" on a HDMI cable (since it's "integrated" in HDMI). So you would need a sound system with an optical input... etc. You get the idea.

They did a real bad job with the PS3 regarding connecting it to TFT screens. :ouch:

Best is probably to buy a screen with HDMI input. I got mine for about 200 Euro. They aren't that expensive anymore.

How so ?... HDMI -> DVI or HDMI -> HDMI ?..

Both works fine for connecting your PS3 to a TFT..

Nope, you can select AV-Multi out for audio output in PS3 menu and plug in the RCA cable that came with PS3, then use a converter to change the RCA -> 3.5mm stereo plug.

Like this, left is the AV-Multi out which I use for sound, next to it is HDMI cable which goes to DVI adapter, then the network and power cords: http://nismo.1g.fi/kuvat/Konsolit+-+PlayStation+3/ps3-017.jpg

As i've said, the adapters (HDMI/DVI) only work if your screen does support it. Mine was a decent Samsung 19'' with 1280x1024 resolution (normal TFT screen) and it didn't work at all.

Just search on google for something like "connecting PS3 to TFT", and you'll see that there are many people who have/had problems.

With "they did a really bad job", i was trying to say that there is no simple way to connect your PS3 to a TFT, like you can do it with your xbox360 with the VGA cable. I'm sure it wouldn't have been hard to make this possible the same way with the PS3. In case that your screen supports the HDMI to DVI adapter, fine, no problem then. But i had to buy a new screen becasue my other one wouldn't work... which worked perfectly fine for the xbox360.... get the point? 💡

It's also not the greatest thing that PS3 only supports official HDTV resolutions over HDMI. I would like to have a 16:10 resolution for my TFT too, something I can get on my 360 with a VGA cable (1280x768). It wouldn't be more work than just software patching to allow custom resolutions, and perhaps v-sync.
 
HDCP is just a copy protection for high definition audio and video.
Blu-ray discs all have this copy protection and you need a screen with HDCP support with every blu-ray player, not only with the PS3.
 
Hi SaintLuke, I'm also using a 42" old PLASMA TV with same resolution as yours. ;)
I'm using component cable (Red, Blue and Green cables for video output) and 480p as output. The picture of GT5P still looks amazing to me! :D
